Anyway, enough with my blabbering, and read on to Chapter One: Disclaimer: Roses are red, violets are blue. I do not own, so don’t even try to sue. Chapter 1: One Year “Stay away!” she cried out, desperately running from the dark form. Deep red tresses whipped across her face as she sped down the hill toward the school, searching for a building, any building, in hopes for an unlocked door. To no avail, all the doors were locked. Cursing up a storm, she swept the sweat off her brow, wiping her saturated hands onto her new school uniform. She wanted to scream, but she knew no one would hear her; they were too far away from any of the important school grounds. Of all the times in the world, why did she forget her fucking dorm key!? “Arnett-chan~,” a deep, gravelly voice called out to her, the deep auburn hairs on her neck suddenly stood up. Setting her body to overdrive, Arnett sped off once more as her Accel activated, limbs burning from overexertion. She knew it was dangerous to be out in the open, she knew she shouldn’t have gone out alone, but she didn’t give herself much of a choice. Her heart racing, lungs burning and muscles numbing, she thought hard as to what exactly went wrong. Just days ago, all students returned to West Genetics. Just hours ago, third years completed the Spring Carnival, with no major injuries on herself. Just hours ago she saw all her friends again as she talked with them, laughed with them, and laughed with them. Just an hour ago she almost passed out on her bed. She didn’t get the chance when her partner, just minutes ago, texted her to meet him at the old tree where they first met. Of course she couldn’t refuse such an invitation. Today was their one year anniversary. A shot of singeing pain entered her lungs; Arnett’s legs easily gave out as the slick surface of the grass caused her to stumble. Another rumble of curses escaped her as she forced her body to crawl to a nearby tree, her head low to the ground as she waited with bated breath for earth-shattering footsteps. Upon reaching her goal, Arnett managed to flip herself over and rest her back against the cool bark, forcing herself to gulp down well needed oxygen. She knew he couldn’t follow her now; she wasn’t considered one of the best at acceleration for nothing. A light spring breeze cooled her heated skin, the deep midnight sky embedded with blinking stars blended perfectly with the snow white moon above. As Arnett lifted her head, copper orbs witnessed light pink petals prettily floating to the ground, the wind flickered the buds to and fro without a care in the world. A gust of wind much stronger than the first blew against the timber, and she watched the petals flow into the distance, like heads of dandelions on a summer day. Arnett couldn’t help but give out a soft grunt. There was no way in hell she would die on such a beautiful night. Suddenly, sharp footsteps crunched across the grass, making Arnett’s gaze lie straight ahead. Impossible, she cringed, watching as the dark shadow come closer and closer to her line of sight. Thick clouds covered the moon’s view, almost inking out the intruder’s existence. Her legs shaking unsteadily, as if screaming at her to remain seated, Arnett hardened her gaze as she raised herself and summoned her scythe, ready and waiting for the being to come crashing towards her. She assumed it was near three meters away when it suddenly stopped, its long frame towering over her in the distance. Her fists clenched the weapon tighter as the glowing moonlight fell upon the emerald field, her stomach and heart doing sickening flips as sandy blonde hair and dull green eyes came into view. She remembered him being cute and energetic just months ago, his easygoing smile made her heart go aflutter when he waved goodbye for winter vacation. Now there was…nothing. Everything looked cold and dull, his face pale, his eyes expressionless. But that smile…that eerily chilling smile made her realize this wasn’t the young man she once knew. This wasn’t her Morrison anymore. Arnett grit her teeth as the man stared at her with unabashed hunger, a high cackle escaped his brutally chapped lips as the air surrounding them felt stale and dead. “I’ll ask you one more time,” she growled out, her blade faced forward with deadly closeness, “what did you do to Morrison?” “Morrison?” the figure answered, his head cocked while he gave a small pout, “ah yes, that’s right. I forgot this person had a name. Oh well, it’s not like I really cared. Though I have to admit, he’s a very presentable meat sack.” ‘Morrison’ cackled once more as killing intent rolled off Arnett in tidal waves. She immediately rushed forward, fists clenched as she made a wide swing towards the fake man’s midsection. The being dodged, its cackles raised to louder and higher heights while Arnett stood her ground. Without delay, she rushed him again, the cold wind blasting her face as she made another long strike, this time making contact. The cackle immediately changed to an ear-piercing shriek, a pale fleshy hand clutched dearly to its side as a smear of red bled through his fingers. A triumphant smirk crossed Arnett’s features, still twisting and turning in hopes of driving that…thing-into a corner. Her momentary success was just that, noticing too late the shrieks had diminished; low, almost animalistic growls rumbled throughout its chest as it simply side-swiped her back to the tree. With shocking force, the back of her head hit against the timber, her sight immediately went blurry. With a groan, Arnett lightly touched her head, already knowing crimson liquid seeped down her temple as she forced her eyes to open. Hoping her weapon was close, she used both hands to lightly pat the grass until a light jingling sound reached her ears, stopping her movements. Arnett slowly looked down until she noticed what looked like a chain entwined around her fingers, her pads mindlessly thumbing up the links until she felt a rough nub in the center of her chest. Unsure of this development, the redhead made a small tug at the chain. Her curiosity made her cry out in shock as searing pain coursed through her veins from the pull. Sweat drenching her skin, Arnett reminded herself not to do that again, until she noticed the link extended further out along the grass. Copper orbs followed the trail until she noticed the metal object connected with an unusual figure lying lifelessly still on the grass, the being she just fought towering over it with glee. Arnett looked up to the being, black soulless eyes and a larger than life smile sent freezing chills down her spine as he roughly kicked the body belly side up, relishing the look of her shock and horror as he edged closer to her. It wasn’t just some random figure…it was herself. Was she…dead?! Another cackle shocked Arnett back to her senses as she saw it walk towards the chain, its face blank with an eerie calmness that immediately set her on edge. She couldn’t move as it gently plucked the chain from the ground, playfully twisting it with his fingers. With a sick grin, he revealed sharp teeth as he lavishly chomped on the chain until the links split. Silent screams escaped Arnett as she fisted the grass, the earth mercilessly pulled up to the surface. Hot tears flowed like streams as she bit her lower lip, refusing to let it know it won. Satisfied, it dropped the now severed links like a bored child after playing with a worn out toy, obsidian orbs set hungrily on the girl buckled over in pain. It took its time walking towards her, as if it knew she couldn’t run anymore. Its body nearly shook with ecstasy as to why it didn’t want to leave this world. It wanted to take this succulent girl with it. “You know,” it drawled, taking a large whiff of her essence, “you smell so fucking good,” Arnett watched in horror as her partner’s body began to twist and contort from its’ structure. The yellow and navy school uniform easily ripped to pieces, the pants ripped on all sides as over muscled thighs connected to a pale waist. Sickening squirming sounds came from the arms and legs, until deathly pale limbs burst out from previously tanned flesh. Its mouth opened wider, wider, and wider still, until a smooth skull pushed itself out of the male corpses’ mouth, the outstanding pressure gave out a loud snap from the jaw and neck. No tears remained in her ducts as Arnett witnessed her previous partner split apart; in its place a large muscular being towered over her, putrid green skin bathed in blackened ooze as the skull-like head intently watched her, the horrific grin never leaving its face. “You bastard!” Arnett cried out, refusing to let the bile escape from her throat, “What do you want from me?!” Rumbling growls escaped from its mouth as it peered down upon her, white smoke seeped out with a low hiss. “What do I…want?” it repeated, its grunting noises grew louder and higher as it kept repeating the phrase. “GIVE ME YOUR SOUL YOU FUCKING BITCH!!” With a defiant roar, it raised one clawed hand, ready to tear her flesh to pieces. Arnett watched in slow motion as the claws grew closer to her heart, said organ rapidly beating beneath her bosom. She instinctively closed her eyes as she waited for her inevitable end. THUNK A heavy weight fell onto the grass as a sudden sharp breeze blew through the night sky. Arnett kept her eyes shut for a few seconds more, until slowly opening them to reveal the offending claw that was about to kill her- Lie uselessly next to her shoes. Shrieks of pain brought her head up in surprise. The horrifying creature that took her life now had the same fearful expression she once wore. The monster groaned as it attempted to swat away at some invisible figure, but ended up getting slashed in an area opposite of where it attacked. Although she couldn’t see it, her ears didn’t deceive her, until Arnett caught a slight glimpse of her savior. Another sickening slice was heard as she watched the flash sever the beings head; it gave out one more cry before it fell, immediately turning to dust before the figure hit the ground. Arnett remained still, leaning heavily on the tree as she watched the mischievous moon pronounce its entrance. The alabaster light shone down on the field to reveal the new figure, watching the breeze carry away the ashes to the distance. With a dark hand perched up to the sky, a delicate purple butterfly lightly touched his fingers until it graciously flapped darkened wings to the blackened sky. Flowing black robes engulfed his body, the sleeves cut just above the shoulder to reveal coffee colored muscles. Short black locks rustled in the wind as that same dark hand slowly ruffled his tresses, a small sigh escaping his lips. She heard a deep tenor voice mutter intelligible words as he sheathed the sword back to his hip, slowly turning towards her. With relief etched on her face, Arnett’s strength failed her as she fell forward, her copper orbs closing to the darkness as she glimpsed up to the young man once more. Pitch black hair…and stunning golden eyes. Hey, you made it! Hope you enjoyed Chapter One, and look forward to Chapter Two!
