It was late, but there was nothing in the house he wanted to eat. Ichigo Kurosaki pulled on his jacket and shouted to no one in particular that he was going out. When nobody answered in reply, he zipped up his jacket and grabbed his keys. The night was warm, maybe too warm for even a light jacket, but Ichigo didn’t feel like turning around so he marched on. It was spring in Karakura town and the night air held the scent of jasmine blossoms. He took a deep breath and closed his eyes. Jasmine blossoms and something else, but he couldn’t think what. He turned the corner to the nearest vending machine and stood in front of it for a minute thinking about flowers. Lavender? No, it was too heavy to be lavender. Lillies? No, again, too musky. What then? He sighed and looked down at the half empty vending machine. There was nothing he wanted to buy and part of him wanted to keep his money and go home. The other part of him wanted to stay put and breathe in the night air. What was the name of that flower?
“Kurosaki, are you going to buy something or just stand there?” A familiar voice asked. Ichigo looked up and saw that it was Uryuu Ishida looking as bored as ever.
“I was going to get the pachon, I guess.” Ichigo said absent mindedly. It was the last one left.
Ishida frowned, “That’s what I wanted.”
Ichigo looked at Uryuu. The light from the street lamp above them hit his glasses in such a way that Ichigo could not see his eyes and instead he was forced to look into a silver glare.
“We can split it then.” They were supposed to be friends after all.
Ichigo pulled some change out of his back pocket and dropped it into the machine. The pachon was released and it dropped to the bottom with a thud. Ishida dug into his pocket and pulled out enough money to pay for his half of the midnight snack but Ichigo only shook his head.
“Don’t worry about it, Ishida.” He said as he began to open the bag of pachon.
“What are you doing?” Ishida asked suddenly, “You are not going to open that here, are you?”
Ichigo stopped and stared Ishida who was frowning.
“If you open that now, then it will become oxygenated and it won’t be as fresh when I get home.” He explained.
Ichigo raised an eyebrow, “Oxygenated?”
Ishida folded his arms across his chest and sighed, “For being in the top 30th percentile of our class you are rather dense, aren’t you?”
Ichigo clenched his teeth and turned his attention to the bag. He was going to open it just to spite Ishida, but Ishida snatched the bag away.
Ichigo sputtered in protest, but the dark haired boy gave him a stern look, “Just let me take my half first, then.”
“But you didn’t even pay for it.” Ichigo spat.
“You didn’t let me, Kurosaki-kun.” Ishida answered at once. He turned on his heels, “Lets go.”
“Where?” Ichigo asked before moving to follow the boy. Ishida didn’t answer but Ichigo figured they were headed to Ishida’s apartment. He rolled his eyes at Ishida, who had a knack for insisting that things, even the most asinine tasks, be done his way and offering little explanation as to why. Sometimes Ichigo felt he detested Ishida when he was being stuck up and mysterious . And although they were ‘friends’ now because of what they had been through in the soul society, the boys were always very keenly aware of the ancient rivalry between their two factions. Ichigo felt that it was his job to try prove Ishida wrong whenever possible, but Ishida was almost always right. So during battle against hollows, when Ishida wanted to strategize Ichigo ran ahead to just annoy him.
The boys walked in silence and Ichigo didn’t mind. Once or twice he glanced over at Ishida who walked proudly and with a straight back. Ishida didn’t hunch like Ichigo did. Ichigo frowned and turn his thoughts back to flowers. Roses? No. Cherry Blossoms? No.
Ishida took out his keys, “Here we are.”
They stood in front of what seemed like an abandoned building. It wasn’t shabby or rundown, but it did look unoccupied. When Ishida saw the surprise on Ichigo’s face he pushed his glasses up onto his nose.
“My father owns this building. He converted the ninth and tenth floors into a loft for me. It’s very spacious.”
But spacious didn’t begin to describe how large Ishida’s apartment was. The ceilings were high and vaulted. Between the large single pane windows that ran the length of the wall, sleek dark book shelves held black and red leather bound books. A set of black leather couches clustered around a glass coffee table that was emblazoned with the Quincy cross. Although Ishida didn’t turn on the lights, he could tell by the moonlight that spilled in through the large windows that in the corner of the apartment, Ishida had set up a place to sew. There was a book shelf dedicated to material and supplies and a dressing dummy stood next to a large table that held nothing but a sewing machine.
Ichigo followed Ishida into the kitchen which was lit by a lamp that hung from the ceiling. The kitchen was well designed like the rest of the apartment with dark marble countertops and floors to match. The whole apartment was spotless. Not a single thing was out of place. It was just like Ishida.
“Clean much?” Ichigo asked in disdain.
Ishida said nothing as he got out a two saucers and broke the pachon in two. Carefully, he set each piece down on its respective plate. He set the saucers down on a marble island in the middle of the kitchen. He opened a draw and selected two forks and set one down next to Ichigo’s saucer and one down next to his own. Ichigo watched in amazement. Ishida moved with an elegant precision and grace that Ichigo seemed to only notice for the first time.
“Sit,” Ishida commanded as he pulled a stool up to the counter for himself. Ichigo sat as he was told, but he did not take his eyes off of his friend. He watched the boy enchanted, as if he was seeing someone use a fork for the first time ever. Ishida cut and speared the pachon with a practiced hand and brought the food to his mouth. Instead of taking the fork into his mouth though, he held it upright and eased the creamy square off of the fork with his tongue. Ichigo stared in amazement. There was familiar swooping in the pit of his stomach. He usually only felt it when he glanced at some of Keigo’s magazines which were filled with naked girls. He also felt it sometimes when the buttons on Orihime’s school uniform came undone when she laughed too hard. Ichigo gulped and tried to eat his own food. It didn’t taste like anything in his mouth so he turned to glance at Ishida again. He marveled at the boys alabaster skin, he thought it contrasted beautifully with the shock of black hair that Ishida kept long and neat. Ishida’s tongue flashed again and Ichigo gulped. He thought momentarily about how that tongue would feel against his own, but he pushed the thought aside. Ishida glanced over at him and the boys locked eyes. Ichigo was afraid the dark haired boy would be able to read his thoughts as they looked at one another so he braced himself for a look of disgust but Ishida’s eyes were soft.
“Good, hmm?” Ishida asked. For some reason he seemed to suddenly be enjoying Ichigo’s company.
Ichigo looked down at his own pachon which he’d hardly touched and nodded in agreement. He wanted to kiss Ishida suddenly, wanted to feel the others pink tongue against his neck and stomach and…Ichigo felt a tensing in his stomach and in his groin. He closed his eyes and images flashed before him, of Ishida twisting, of Ichigo pulling. He opened his eyes again and found that the other was no longer sitting next to him but instead rinsing his plate off at the sink.
“I’m going to bed.” He said, “Leave when you’re done. And remember to lock the front door.” The softness in his eyes had gone.
