Byakuya made his way to the gates of the training grounds for the Wolf Pack. Unlike the training grounds for the various squads of the 13, which were large and open, the Pack area was heavily wooded, tight quarters and confined spaces. It made sense to a certain extent, the fighting style was vastly different as the purpose was different. The 13 were meant to guard Soul Society as a whole, which meant they mostly fought in open areas. Where the Pack was the elite guard for the royal family and usually fought hand to hand. All of them had Bankai and shikai though, along with various levels of kido knowledge. There was only one place to go up from being a Captain and the Pack was it.
As a Captain, he was allowed to observe their training to further improve his own squad’s abilities. He was allowed as long as they weren’t doing anything that was solely for the Pack’s eyes at any rate. He nodded slightly to the guards stationed there, both of whom he knew in passing as former Captains. All Pack members were either former Captains or souls who had immense potential who were swept up for training early on. He frowned slightly at that. He knew the leader of the Packs was won by right of contest and was only held so long as any opponents could be put down. As he understood it, the princess had held that title for a good century now. That was something that should have surely given his family pause for consideration when it came to Kuroaski, Inari.“Kuchiki, Byakuya, Captain of Squad 6, here to observe training if permitted,” Byakuya said, very proper in protocol.
One of the guards nodded. “Observation is permitted today. You must surrender your zanpakto to us while inside the training grounds, Captain Kuchiki.”
Byakuya nodded and removed Senbonzakura from his waist. He handed the sword to the guard with both hands. “I surrender my weapon as a sign of good faith that I mean no harm to any member of the pack,” he said.
The guard accepted it with both hands as well. “I will guard it as my own and it will be returned to you once you leave Pack grounds. One of the Pack members will guide you and be at your side for the duration of your stay.”
“That is acceptable,” Byakuya said.
They waited a few minutes until what seemed like a child came through a side gate. Byakuya would have guessed her at around ten or eleven at the most. But he also knew it was a very bad mistake to underestimate anyone on these grounds no matter what their apparent age. She stood with hands on hips, looking Byakuya up and down boldly.
“He’s too pretty to be a Captain,” she said with a snort.
One of the guards chuckled. “I can assure you that he is in fact a Captain, Kali. You said the same of Captain Ukitake.”
“Nothing in the Universe is as pretty as Jyuu-baby.”
The guard sighed and rolled his eyes. “Captain Kuchiki is here to observe training today.”
The girl snorted again. “He’s here to observe the Alpha,” she said, eyes narrowed at Byakuya. “We’re not stupid, you know. We’ve all heard the rumors.”
“Kali,” one of the guards said warningly.
“It’s true and you know it,” she snapped. “She also said to expect him either today or tomorrow. You’re way out of your league, pretty boy.”
Byakuya kept his calm mask firmly in place. “If you would, lead the way,” he said smoothly.
“No way she’s marrying you. You’re an ass,” the girl said, turning on her heel and marching off. “Move it, pretty boy. I haven’t got all day to babysit you.”
Byakuya followed the girl around the maze of inner courtyards to the smaller training grounds. These were more formal than the rest of the grounds and as far as he knew were only used for new recruits training. They rounded a set of circular stairs to an observation deck overlooking the grounds. He frowned a little as there was no fighting whatsoever going on. No sparring taking place at all. Simply four people in the oddest position he’d ever seen. Standing on one leg with the other stretched out behind them, arms out in front of them and back flat. He turned to look at his reluctant guide.
“What are they doing?” he asked.
“Virabhadrasana III,” she said. “Also called Warrior three. It teaches balance and strengthens most of the body.”
“Yoga?” he asked, turning his attention back to the people being taught and their teacher.
“Yeah,” the girl said defensively. “Got a problem with that, pretty boy?”
“No. It makes perfect sense. Most of these people were trained in Kendo and Kido. Naturally, the Packs would be taught differently as they’re predominantly in a close contact position of personal guards. Yoga and Tai Chi are excellent for hand to hand training due to the strength and flexibility inherit in the movements. It’s perfect in case one is caught without a zanpakto and no ability to use Kido. I think it’s brilliant actually.”
The girl’s eyebrows lifted briefly. “Watch, one of them will be whining about it in a minute,” she said.
Sure enough, not more than a minute later it seemed one of the recruits in training did complain or question either the position or why they were doing it. Inari simply shrugged and said something to them before assuming the stance herself. She must have ordered them to try attacking her because the four of them came at her from all sides. She simply pivoted, kicking two of them in the head one after the other and had injured the knees of the other two with her hands, thoroughly proving her point as all parties involved but her were on the ground.
The girl next to Byakuya was smiling with pride. “Think you’re worthy, pretty boy?”
Byakuya didn’t answer, just continued watching as Inari got them back into stance. This time there were no complaints, just grim determination.
“Alpha! Someone here to see you!” Kali called down to her leader.
Inari shaded her eyes against the glare of the sun and looked up into the observation deck. She was startled to find Byakuya standing next to her fifth seat. “I’ll try not to die of embarrassment. Someone’s a smart boy,” she murmured to herself. The group she was training sagged in relief but she looked over her shoulder at them. “Did I say you were finished?”
“No, Alpha,” they groaned in unison.
“Get back in stance then,” she ordered. “Kali, bring him down.” Might as well face whatever he’d figured out head on. But not without a fight, she thought. She sighed, vaguely wishing she’d been at her best for their first “official” meeting. Barefoot, sweaty from sparring and exhausted was not normally how one wanted to meet someone else. Probably come to politely refuse in person, she thought. Only one man in the universe had been crazy enough to want to marry her and he was long gone now.
Byakuya followed Kali down the steps to the training grounds. Pausing for a moment and tilting his head to the side slightly. He thought he’d heard . . . music. The words coming to him so faintly he almost couldn’t make them out.
I look in your eyes and I can seeHe shook his head to clear it but the melody stayed in his mind. More words came to him the closer to the leader of the Packs he got. He shook his head again because it was starting to pound now. Very strange, he thought, to be hearing music. Not that he disliked music, he simply didn’t have time for it except on very rare occasions.
“Hey! What’s wrong with you, pretty boy? You keep shaking your head like a dog in the rain,” Kali said.
“It’s nothing,” he said, moving next to her toward the training grounds center.
He was looking at Inari steadily, noting that the only thing different was the uniform of the Pack and the fact she was wearing glasses. She was still correcting the stance of one recruit and he thought it was interesting to watch her at work. When Kali stopped a few feet away from her, Inari turned and greeted her subordinate first before pivoting around to him.
He bowed to her, something he hadn’t done with anyone for ages, and stayed down until addressed as was proper. “Denka, it is an honor,” he said quietly.
“Is it, Kuchiki-dono?” she questioned. “Stand please.”
Byakuya straightened, still keeping his eyes away from hers. Royalty had to be addressed properly and with due respect. The only person he would ever forego that with was Ichigo, partially because he doubted the other man would allow it.
Kali’s eyebrows went up again. “Denka?” she questioned, looking between Byakuya and Inari.
“He’s being respectful, unlike you, brat,” Inari said, cuffing the girl on the back of the head. “Was there something in particular you wanted, Kuchiki-dono?”
“I have questions I’d like to ask of you, Denka.”
“I’ll bet you do,” Inari said. From the feeling rolling off of him, she’d almost bet he had an idea that she’d made a moonlight foray into his bedchamber and wanted to know why. “Ask.”
“I believe it would be best if they were asked privately, Denka,” Byakuya said, still being respectful. “As they are of a somewhat sensitive nature.”
“Indeed. How badly do you want the answers?” Inari asked.
“I beg your pardon, Denka?”
“Pack, what must one do for an answer to a personal question?” Inari asked.
“Draw blood, Alpha,” the Pack answered in perfect unison.
Byakuya’s head shot up in disbelief before he remembered protocol and dropped it again. “I presented the guards at the gate with my zanpakto as a gesture of good faith. ”
Inari turned to Kali. “Go get Senbonzakura for Captain Kuchiki, Kali.”
“On it,” she said, streaking off to get the sword.
Byakuya was somewhat startled that she knew the name of his zanpakto. But he supposed that either Rukia or Ichigo had mentioned it in passing to her.
Kali was back in a flash with Senbonzakura and handed the sword to him very respectfully.
“The rules are quite simple,” Inari said. “Blood must be drawn per how many questions you’d like answered. They must be answered truthfully and completely. No bankai without warning, no kido without warning. Agreed?”
“Agreed,” Byakuya said, bowing to her and moving into a guarded stance.
