As Yumichika leisurely strolled the familiar path, his mind wandered, taking him back once again to that impossibly small house. Having Ikkaku around had made Yumichika feel more secure about leaving Aki at home while he earned some money as a painter. For that reason, he and Aki had begun traveling from village to village with Ikkaku, while the brute sought out fights with others. This was intriguing to Yumichika, and he began to relish a fight as much as Ikkaku. It didn’t take the beautiful man long to realise why, it was a way for him to let out his anger over his failure as protector.
Aki on the other hand, upon finding out that Yumichika would get into occasional fights, would display her temper at the information. A rare sight, which until he’d begun the behavior, he’d never seen before. Aki losing her temper, was also quite intriguing and Yumichika would be lying if he said he didn’t find her arousing while she was like that. Aki was always a strange one, the act of losing her temper was no different, while her voice would be soft, and even her purple eyes betrayed a violent rage surging under the surface. Her small hands would clench into tight fists, and then relax at her side. It was alluring, but also extremely confusing to him. It was like she was struggling to keep control of herself and yet didn’t wish to. At the end of the fight, it was always the same: Yumichika would tell her he’d fight as often as he wanted and she couldn’t stop him. Aki would stay quiet, but look on her face said more than any spoken words could, he frightened her. Or she was afraid for him, who or what she was actually afraid of, he couldn’t tell. The way she held her eyes, low, off to the side as if she wanted her eyes to meet his, but her body wouldn’t allow it, told him she was afraid whenever he fought.
A sinking tightness started in his stomach, and grew spreading outwards. Briefly, he paused in the street, a hand on his stomach as he quietly contemplated the feeling. His orchid orbs widened a bit as a sharp gasp left his slightly parted lips from the realization: guilt. It was the first time he’d realized that about her and the guilt now drowned him faster than a tidal wave. More tears threatened to over flow from him as he looked in the direction he could take to return to that district and find her. Should he? He’d been gone for so many years, how would she react to seeing him now after so many decades? Would she laugh? Cry? Give him the same look she’d give him during their arguments? Haul off and slap him?
An amused smile crossed his lips along with a soft chuckle. Aki was never violent unless she or another person was threatened. She wouldn’t strike him, although she’d likely glare daggers at him with her eyes, wishing she could crush him on the spot. Yet, he couldn’t help but wonder what her motivation was for being so cold to him when he left. He’d hoped they could still write, that he would still be welcomed to visit. He knew it’d be the end of their arrangement, whatever it really was. Even still, with that knowledge, he hadn’t wanted her out of his life completely. The fact she’d even thought that, never mind the fact she said it, was what had hurt him worse than any injury he’d ever taken in battle. The pain he felt from when Charlotte Chuhlhourne had broken his arm in three places, was a hundred times less than Aki saying that if he left, he was nothing to her.
Yumichika heavily sighed as he sat down under a nearby tree. He knew his clothing was about to become severely soiled by the dirt and grass, right now he didn’t care. He closed his eyes almost wishing he had more shinten to drop onto himself. He was missing something. He had been missing something all of this time. He had to be. What was it? What had he failed to see? What made her act that way towards him? It wasn’t just the fact he was leaving her, she didn’t like fighting and found it to be intolerably vile, but if the push came to shove she was skilled in Kendo. She had enough skill to spar against him when they lived together. If it came down to the grittiest necessity, she could defend herself as well as anyone else, and protect others if fate called upon her to do so. That wasn’t it. Aki wasn’t the type to be concerned with her own safety, she was plenty capable on her own and made it clear several times she didn’t need a man around to take care of her. She was beautiful, strong, gentle, yet independent. That’s what he loved about her. So then why had she said those things?
He let out another heavy sigh as his body became heavier and he drifted off into sleep again.
Yumichika woke up, his long purple-black hair a mess from tossing and turning through the night. It had only stopped when Aki had wrapped an arm around him and cuddled into him. She calmed his restless nightmare filled sleep, with just a simple touch. Currently, the space beside him on the floor mat was empty. He looked around, it was spring, maybe some point in May?
His eyes widened as he grabbed Ruri’iro Kujaku and raced from the hut, still in his night Yukata. Focusing his thoughts, he searched around with his senses until he picked up on Aki’s spiritual pressure. His feet seemed to move faster of their own accord, not allowing him to stop, ‘Why did she take off so early? This has been happening more and more lately.’
His eyes widened when he spotted Aki, hunched over in some bushes.
His hands went clammy and cold, while his heart raced like a frightened rabbit in his chest, “Aki.”
She straightened up, and seemed to be wiping her sleeve on something before looking back to him, and started to laugh at his disheveled appearance, “Go brush your hair, Yumichika. You’ll frighten the children with that mop!”
Yumichika blinked before chuckling slightly, ‘if she were anyone else I’d kill her for that insult!’
“Are you alright?” Yumichika asked.
Aki nodded, a smile gracing her perfect lips, “Yeah, I’m fine. Just some bad rice last night, I think. I’ll be okay.”
Yumichika walked over to her, gently cupping her cheek, “You threw up? Maybe we should go into the Seireitei, or maybe the town midwife. Just to make sure you’re alright.”
“If it keeps up, I’ll go, okay? Don’t worry,” Aki replied as she kissed Yumichika’s cheek.
Yumichika wrapped his arms around Aki’s petite frame, holding her close. He wasn’t very tall himself, in fact for a man he was slightly under average height at 5’6 ½”. Aki was about 4’11 ½”
He blinked a bit as he held her, “Aki, you don’t have a fever. This isn’t from bad food, or a virus. You should see someone.”
Aki sighed, “Alright. I’ll go see the midwife find out if she can suggest some sort of medicine for my stomach.”
Yumichika smiled and nodded, “I’ll go brush my hair and get dressed.”
Aki giggled, “Yeah, please do… before some oni mistakes you for its kin.”
Yumichika’s mouth gaped, while he blinked incesently. Aki laughed at his expression before running back towards the hut.
Yumichikak followed her, “You’ll pay for that! I am not an oni!”
Aki smiled while shouting over her shoulder, “I know! You’re a peacock—with badly ruffled feathers!!”
Yumichika growled at the feathers remark as he caught up to Aki and tackled her. They landed on the ground, Yumichika having positioned himself so Aki would land on top of him and he began tickling her ribs. Aki giggled, kicking her legs and squirming. He smiled at her giggling, and chuckled as he fought to keep a hold of her. His hand brushed against her stomach as he tickled her, 'hmm? Her stomach's a bit bloated.'
She elbowed his stomach playfully and twisted from his grasp as she stood up, "Are you going to see Ikkaku today?"
Yumichika nodded as he stood back up, "Yes. I should see how he's recovering."
Aki nodded as she headed off towards the village midwife's hut. Calling back to him as she walked, "Try to talk some sense into that shaved head of his. You never know what life will give you to live for, his death wish is just plain ugly."
The young peacock chuckled to himself as he headed into the hut to get ready for the visit with his friend.
Yumichika blinked himself awake, and felt the blood had drained from his face while his insides twisted and churned without end at a thought that now weighed heavily on him.
The whole reason Aki was like that about him leaving… was she? Had she actually been –
He shook his head violently, and pressed the heels of his hands into his forehead, as if trying to force the idea from existence. No! No way! She couldn’t have been! She would’ve said something! She would’ve! She would never do something that ugly! He looked back at the direction he'd have to take to return to the village he'd left Aki in.
'I can't just turn back to the 11th now. I almost wish I hadn't remembered that. Now I have to know,' He thought to himself as he stood up. He brushed off his clothing before flash stepping towards the 70th Northern Rukongai district.
AN: Okay, so we don't really know what district Yumichika and Ikkaku were in when they met Kenpachi Zaraki, so I'm just giving it a random number and direction. Also, an 'oni' is a monster in Japanese folklore. Usually demons, devils, ogres, or trolls.
