I wait patiently, though my heart is racing, for Byakuya to return. Sakurako has not woken entirely, though she wiggles in my arms a bit, seeking comfort. I pull my breast out and allow her to latch, believing it to be the only way to make her be still. I am correct, of course, but she bites me a bit, making me wince. For such a sweet baby, she has poor table manners.
My curiosity is getting the better of me and I'm finding it hard to stay patient. Luckily, Byakuya returns within half an hour. The look on his face is extremely unamused. "I may just fire Rina." he sighs, placing his sword in it's normal resting place.
"What?" I ask, shifting myself to place my own sword in a safe spot beside the bed.
"Rina. That silly maid is helping in the kitchen this morning and she dropped a pot of boiling water on herself. Doc is treating it so she won't be in too much pain."
I sigh softly. "Well, as terrible as that is, at least it wasn't an attack."
He sits beside me and catches me as I lean backward with our daughter still attached to me. "That is a good way to look at it."
"I can reach bankai without Captain Kurotsuchi's help. I know it. I refuse to ask his assistance. My blood is my problem to overcome." I say, locking eyes with him.
He seems startled for a bare instant before he nods. "I will assist you any way that I can. I am proud of you for refusing to do anything drastic. You have gotten much stronger."
"I will accept your help. I realize that when I first came here, when you and Rukia tried to help me, it was not shame that kept me from accepting..."
"What was it then?"
"Pride. Though I had no reason to be prideful, after everything I was put through, that small bit was enough. It has grown since you took me in. I have pride for who I am, for being able to get you to marry me, for being allowed to have your children. So many things I have pride about, when I have questioned myself for so many years."
His eyes soften. "Questioning yourself is to be expected, after everything you have been through. I am glad you are finding pride. You should be proud of your accomplishments, of course."
"That is what I love the most about you, Byakuya. You make me so confident and proud of myself. You make me feel truly cherished."
His hand strokes my cheek softly. "You are cherished, Nanami. I love you and the woman you are becoming."
Sakurako finishes her meal and I quickly change her diaper before allowing her to lay between her father and I. She doesn't take long to crawl into his arms and go back to sleep. I stroke her hair, a bit glad that it's black like her father's. My thoughts go back to what Captain Kurotsuchi had said. I'm pregnant again. My daughter will have a playmate soon. I say a silent prayer for a boy. Byakuya deserves to have a son.

I watch the sparring of the men in Squad 11 with interest. They're certainly not easy, even with their wooden swords. I see many men with a collection of bruises and scrapes. Kenpachi is nowhere to be seen at the moment, which is a bit odd, I suppose. Orihime watches from beside me while Yumichika stops a set of opponents and corrects them. She gives him a dreamy eyed expression. "You really love him, don't you, Hime?" I ask her softly.
"Yeah, I do. He can be a little mean sometimes but it's only when I make a beauty mistake. It's nothing I can't handle. Ichigo was worse."
I nod a bit. "As long as you're happy...Orihime, I'm just worried. You're a human and he's not. You're going to grow older, he won't."
She frowns and sighs. "Captain Kurotsuchi is doing a favor in return for me allowing him to study my Shun Shun Rika. Yumichika doesn't know and I don't want anyone else knowing either. He's going to...remove my soul chain and turn my body into a spiritual body instead of a human one."
I'm startled into silence for a moment. "Are you sure that's what you want?"
"I have spoken with Captain Kotetsu and she says if my power remains, she would gladly have me join squad four. She's trying to encourage me not to but I'm much happier here in Soul Society than I am in the human world. I have so many friends here and only one or two down there. It's hard seeing Ichigo with my best friend Tatsuki but...I'm happy they're happy. Kazui is doing well in school too and is already training with Ichigo to help control his soul reaper powers since he can't go to the Academy."
I nod again. "I can't imagine having to be away from Sakurako like that. You're much stronger than you let on, Hime."
She smiles a bit. "Ichigo and I parted on good terms so there's nothing to be bitter about. I'm much happier here. The food is much better, the people are much better, the shopping is a lot better too."
"Well, as long as you're happy."
Kenpachi finally makes his entrance, though he looks anything but rested this morning. He perches next to me and, as usual, pulls me over to scrub my head with his knuckles. "Nii-chan! My hair! Ow!" I whine, struggling as usual. He finally releases me and hands me a box. It's wrapped rather poorly, as if a child had done it. Perhaps his children had. "What's this?"
"Your birthday present. The kids wanted to get you somethin'." he says, not looking at me.
I open it carefully and am pleased to find a very intricate hear comb. Purely decorative, of course. It's silver with tiny gold roses on it and a small chain bears a red gem that's been carved into another rose. "Oh, it's beautiful!" I say, smiling happily. I notice a smirk on his face. "What? What's so funny?"
"Girls. You all are like damn birds. Shiny things make you happy."
I swat at his side. "Well, at least birds are pretty, Nii-sama." I tease.
"Looks don't help in battle for a man, Noodle."
I feel my hair shifting. "Hold still, Nanami. I'll pin your hair up." Orihime says.
"Oh! Thank you, Hime."
Kenpachi watches the men and only when Orihime is done fixing my hair into a bun and placing the comb does he look over. His gaze softens a bit. "It suits you."
"Thank you."
"Spar with me."
"I...oh, I can't. Byakuya would murder me." I sigh.
"Why?"
"Uhm...Captain Kurotsuchi found something in my blood work yesterday. I'm pregnant." I say nervously.
He stares at me for a moment before smiling. "Well, guess I can't beat you up anymore, huh?"
"Not for awhile."
"Oi! Dad! I wanna spar!" Ryden calls as he bursts into the dojo.
Kenpachi is on his feet in an instant. "C'mon then, runt."
****Byakuya POV****
I read through the reports on Nanami's father. He was under an assumed name. Retired seventy years ago, long after her birth though still during her childhood...right around the time the molestation started. He was regarded as a low threat and, after a twenty year span of no trouble with him, the squad 2 guards keeping an eye on him had been called back. Captain Yamamoto had still kept an eye on him, however, by random check ins. Even his notes had hinted about genetics. Could it be possible that Nanami's heritage is beyond normal?
"Captain, we've got trouble. Big trouble." Renji says, dashing into the office and laying a letter, hastily scrawled, on my desk. I read it before crushing it in my hand.
"Where is Nanami?"
"I dropped her off with Squad Eleven this morning, per your request."
"Good. Go stay there with her. You may enjoy the party, just do not drink to excess. I need you to protect her. Let Captain Zaraki know what has happened but Nanami isn't to know. Do you understand my orders, Renji?"
He nods. "Yes, sir."
"Keep her in the squad Eleven barracks at all costs. She's not to go anywhere near home."
"Yes, Captain!"
I take a few deep breaths to calm myself before leaving the office. I have been issued a challenge by her brothers. It would be rude to make them wait.
****Nanami POV****
I feel sick suddenly. Some strange feeling of dread has taken over. I try to hide it but as Renji dodges my question of everything being alright again, my suspicions are confirmed. Everything is not alright. Kenpachi seems to be at ease, though his eyes don't stray far from me.
"Thank you for the party, Kenpachi. I really appreciate it." I say as I take another bite of cake.
"You're family, far as I'm concerned. Harmona woulda liked you too. She liked cute, squishy things."
"Squishy!?"
He pinches my cheeks. "Squishy."
I groan in mock outrage before pouting. "Maybe I shouldn't eat this. It might make me more squishy."
"You need to be more squishy. Good for the bean you're growin'."
I sigh and nod. "You're right. I'll finish eating in a minute. I need a bathroom break."
******************************
I feel Byakuya's reiatsu as I get closer to home. Something is very wrong. He's in battle with someone...no, three people. I use shunpo to get there faster and the sight in the back yard horrifies me. Tayashi and Byakuya are fighting. My brothers are holding Sakurako captive. My fury grows. I have never felt this feeling before, like lava scorching my veins. It burns my chest.
"Ripple, Mizu yōsei." I say quietly, while their attention is on my husband. I can see he's holding his own but he is growing tired. I'm going to scream at Renji later. I throw three water balls at my brothers. Haru and Shota fall. Jiru struggles, squeezing Sakurako to his chest.
"Well, hello, Nanami. How nice to see you." he hisses angrily.
"Put my daughter down. Now." I command him, my fury clear in my voice.
"No. I'm going to kill her if you don't release this. Do it now."
I hesitate and he squeezes her harder, making her scream. "Calm yourself, Mizu yōsei!" I cry, tears streaming down my cheeks. He releases his grip on her.
"Good girl. Now, you're going to pay for what you've done to mother. Drop your sword and come stand over here. Tayashi will be killing your husband then it's your turn."
"Nanami! Do not drop your sword." Byakuya commands, not looking at me.
"If you do not, I will break her neck right now."
I hesitate no longer. I drop my sword to the ground and move to stand beside my brother. I keep my eyes on Byakuya, though I'm also making plans. I can use shunpo to retrieve my sword. However, Sakurako will be killed if I try. Her tears are breaking my heart. I must do something. "Jiru, let me calm her."
"Not a chance, you brat. I'm not as stupid as I look. The kid stays right here in my arms." Jiru hisses.
Sakurako screams, reaching for me. "Give her here. She's just going to keep screaming. You're scaring her."
"Fuck off! I'm just going to kill her anyway."
I watch as he grabs the side of her head, making as if he's going to snap her neck. I don't bother to think. I use shunpo and hit my brother in the cheek with my fist. He drops my daughter, as I'd intended him to do. I barely manage to catch her but when I do, I use shunpo again to reach my sword. I will be handicapped having to hold my daughter, but I am positive I can do this.
****Byakuya POV****
I dodge another strike from Tayashi and slash in a counter attack. He manages to get his sword up in time to block my strike. "What's wrong, Kuchiki? Are you really wanting to defend her and the brat you sired? Doesn't seem like it. Why don't you use your shikai?" he taunts me.
"Why would you think I need to do that? I do not need my shikai to defeat you." I reply.
I hear Sakurako scream in pain and glance over my shoulder. Nanami is holding her sword, having already used her shikai. "Good girl. Now, you're going to pay for what you've done to mother. Drop your sword and come stand over here. Tayashi will be killing your husband then it's your turn." her brother says. My attention is forced back on Tayashi as he yells a kido incantation. I dodge the fireball.
"Nanami! Do not drop your sword!" I order her.
"If you do not, I will break her neck right now!"
I hear the telltale thud of her sword hitting the ground. Damn that idiotic woman! My sword collides with Tayashi's again, creating sparks. I cannot focus on the females. I have to defeat Tayashi. I hear a scuffle behind me, but cannot look. I can only pray that everything is alright. I manage to shift Tayashi and myself around so that I can see without looking over my shoulder. Nanami has our daughter and her sword. Surely she's not-
"Prepare to die, Jiru. I will not allow you to harm my child or me any longer. I told you before, you are dead to me. You are no longer my brother. None of you are." She says, her voice as cold as ice.
"You're weak, Nanami. There's nothing you can do to hurt me. You're pathetic." Jiru shouts angrily.
"Is that so? Somehow I have my doubts as to the validity of that claim."
Tayashi manages to get past my guard and stab me in my side. Luckily it seems to have missed major organs but this will be problematic if I do not finish this quickly. "Scatter, Senbonzakura!"
As the petals of my shikai float around me, I hear Nanami scream behind me. "Ripple, Mizu yōsei!"
Her water engulfs me suddenly along with my petals. It does not seem to be numbing me as it usually does. It is shielding me!? My petals are swept away and I watch, with both pride and horror, as the water slams into the bodies of her brothers. Blood rains down, staining her water shield. She screams in fury, sending barrage after barrage of her petal laced water at her brothers. I cannot tear my eyes away from the carnage. Their screams of pain have long since died off.
"Monsterous, isn't she?" Tayashi laughs from the other side of the shield.
I do not reply to him. "Nanami." I say her name as a captain talking to his underling. When she does not stop, I call her name again. "Nanami, you will answer me!" I finally shout. It startles her and she looks up at me. Tears streak her face. Her entire body is trembling. Sakurako is sobbing in her arms. "You must stop, Nanami. It is over." I command her.
Her water shield drops. I quickly swing my petals around but Tayashi is gone. Seeing this, I release my shikai and walk to my wife. She's not breathing correctly, just short gasps, almost hyperventilating. I remove Sakurako from her arms and gently pat my daughters back, trying to soothe her. My free arm pulls Nanami to my chest, stroking the back of her head gently. I need to get them to the infirmary...I need to get there too. I summon a Hell butterfly and send a command to squad 2.
**********************
"You're telling me your wife did this mess?" Soi Fon asks for the second time, looking at the carnage that is left of Nanami's brothers.
"Yes. She was defending herself and our daughter, who they had taken hostage while I was fighting Tayashi Nobiama." I reply calmly.
"Where is Nobiama now?"
"He fled once she dropped the water shield she had around me, probably fearing that he was next."
"I see. He was probably right to do so. Your family was given the same drug that her father was to induce a coma. Squad four is treating them as we speak."
"I appreciate you bringing them with you."
She glances down at Nanami, who is sitting very quietly at my feet. Sakurako has already been taken by squad 4 for examination. There was a bruise developing on the side of her head when they'd taken her into the house. Nanami appears to be in shock. She stares with sightless eyes at anyone who tries to speak to her but will not speak back. "I think you need to have her examined. She doesn't appear to be injured but her actions probably scared her. I don't think she will be punished. She was defending her child and we all know that a mother protecting her child is one of the most dangerous things in the world." Soi Fon says softly.
"No doubt. I have never seen her so violent before." I reply.
Soi Fon crouches down and tilts Nanami's chin up so their eyes meet. "Mrs. Kuchiki, can you hear me?"
To my shock, Nanami grabs her wrist tightly and begins to sob. Broken sobs that make my heart ache. Soi Fon looks startled but doesn't try to pull away, perhaps recognizing that my wife doesn't mean her any harm. She lets Soi Fon go after a moment, though her tears do not cease. Soi Fon returns to her feet. "I think perhaps she's ok. Shall I help you get her to bed?"
I glance at the blood on my side and sigh. "It bothers me to ask for help but I believe it'd be best in this case."
She nods and gently coaxes Nanami to her feet, guiding her as one would a scared puppy. I follow at a more sedate pace, clamping my hand to my side. As soon as we enter the mansion, the squad 4 healers set upon me. "Please, I will allow you to heal me but I wish to stay by my wife." I say firmly. I notice third seat Hanataro is among the group and he gives a shy nod, allowing me to do as I wish.
Nanami is seated on our bed when we arrive. Soi Fon is patting her hand awkwardly. She speaks softly to her, though Nanami simply nods or shakes her head in response. I sit on the edge of the bed and remove the top layers of my uniform, letting the healers get to work. Soi Fon finishes speaking before coming around to my side. "I've gotten her side of the report. It was a bit difficult, given she refuses to speak, but I can take yes or no answers to figure it out. I will take my men and leave once the bodies are packaged. We will put out an alert for Tayashi as well."
"I suggest you look with Akane's sister. That's where he went to last time to stay hidden."
"I'll bear that in mind. If she is harboring him, she will be arrested as well."
"Fair enough. My thanks for your assistance."
She simply nods before leaving. I feel Nanami moving and she presses herself against my uninjured side, forcing me to wrap my arm around her. She rests her ear over my heart, taking a deep breath...and another. I understand she's doing this to calm herself. Hanataro crouches in front of her and takes her hand, very gently, between his. Within seconds, he catches her in his arms. "I don't know if this was the right thing to do but...I felt perhaps resting would be best for her right now." he says to me.
"I believe that is a wise decision." I reply.
He carries her to her side of the bed and gently tucks her in. The healer working on my side finishes stitching me and gives me after care instructions before retreating quickly from the room. Hanataro bows. "I will go assist with your-"
"How is my daughter?" I ask, cutting him off.
"Oh, uh..." he hesitates and sighs. "She's bruised but no broken bones. Captain Kotetsu mentioned keeping her overnight to observe her neck. She's worried about possible muscle strain of the neck."
I frown. "And her brothers?"
"I...there would be no saving them if they hadn't already expired. The damage of your petals combined with the water was catastrophic. Every organ was damaged. They bled to death within seconds of the first attack. The strange thing is there is evidence of being scalded by boiling water as well."
"I see. Nanami has stated before that her emotions cause the water of her shikai to behave differently. I believe she stated anger makes the water burn. I believe anger could describe how she was feeling at the time she attacked."
"I see. I shall pass that information along to my captain. For now, I encourage you both to rest. I believe it's likely that your daughter will be kept here and two to three of my squad mates will keep watch overnight in her room, if that suits you?"
"That would be fine, I believe."
"Thank you." Hanataro says before bowing and leaving the room.
I lay down, being careful not to stretch too far with my stitches. I curl my body around Nanami's, stroking her cheek gently before kissing her forehead. I am proud of her, though still quite horrified at her loss of control. She's proven herself able to defend herself, should the need arise. And able to protect our daughter. When she'd been ordered to drop her sword, I had been worried. I didn't realize that she's been practicing her shunpo. That is the only explanation for how she retrieved the sword so quickly.
I frown as I look down at her body. There are stray blood drops on her uniform and skin. I cannot stand the sight. I rise to retrieve a wash cloth, wetting it down before returning. I am as gentle as I can be as I wipe her skin, cleaning the offending red drops until they are gone. I remove her uniform as well, throwing it in the laundry bin. She has no damage to her body from this incident, which I am thankful for. My hand seems to move by it's own decision and lay between her hips where my new child grows. I am beyond thankful that she wasn't injured, that this child wasn't harmed.
I decide to go check on Sakurako. After throwing my robe on, I head down the hall to her room. Isane is still there, as is Hanataro and a young girl. Isane looks to me and gives me a tight smile. "Captain Kuchiki. Your daughter is doing well. I've done x-rays and other tests. She's bruised. I've decided not to heal it so we can monitor for any spreading of the bruising which would indicate bleeding."
I cross the room to my daughter crib. Fury rises in my brain. The entire right side of her head is bruised in the shape of a handprint. Her chest is bruised as well. She whimpers upon seeing me and reaches for me. I lift her gently and she lays her head on my shoulder. She continues to whimper. "Is she in pain?" I ask.
"We think there's a chance there's strained muscles in her neck. It looks like that bruise on her face is from the brother trying to break her neck. I was just about to give her a dose of pain reliever when you walked in. It will definitely help her sleep easier."
I nod, kissing my daughters head. Isane comes forward and gently coaxes Sakurako to open her mouth. She places a syringe in her mouth filled with a pink liquid. Sakurako drinks it without too much fuss, seeming to enjoy the flavor. When she's done, her head immediately returns to my shoulder. I close my eyes and simply allow her to rest on me. Isane watches for a few moments before shaking her head. "I don't think she's going to sleep. She seems to be searching for something or someone." she says quietly.
"I have plenty of spare rooms for whoever is going to stay tonight. Ask Rina to direct you. I will take her with me for a short while to see if resting next to her mother will relax her enough to sleep." I reply before turning and heading back to my room.
****Nanami POV****
I struggle with my eyelids, finally wrenching them open. I'm alone...and in nothing but my undergarments. What's happened? I wonder where Byakuya is, worrying that perhaps his injury is worse than it seemed. Just when I decide to try to get up, he returns to the room with Sakurako in his arms. Before I can say anything, he lays Sakurako beside me very gently before climbing into bed himself.
My daughter looks terrible and I cannot stop myself from crying. My eyes and throat hurt already from the crying earlier but it doesn't matter. She whimpers and pats my cheek gently, as if trying to comfort me. I catch her tiny hand and kiss it. I should have acted faster. I could have saved her this pain. Byakuya watches me silently, his face unreadable. This worries me. Does he blame me for her injuries? I try not to worry about his thoughts as I pull my daughter, very gently, into my arms. I stroke her back very gently and watch as her eyes slowly begin to close. When she finally sleeps, my tears slow to a halt.
"Are you alright, Nanami?" Byakuya finally asks, though his voice doesn't hold any warmth. He hasn't used this flat, uninterested voice with me since before the wedding. I try to talk and wince at the burning in my throat so resort to nodding instead. My eyes fall shamefully back down, away from his face. That is the last he speaks to me for a long while before simply taking Sakurako back to her bedroom. Upon his return he pulls me to his chest. "Captain Kotetsu and Hanataro will be staying to keep an eye on our daughter tonight. You need to rest, Nanami."
I shake my head. I do not want to sleep. I will have nightmares. He sighs, irritation evident, but makes no comment. He doesn't speak to me anymore, simply rubs my back in the same manner I had done to Sakurako. I close my eyes but refuse to sleep. I will not. His hand slows and stops as sleep overtakes him finally.
My mind wanders back to the attack and I shiver a bit. What sort of monster have I become? Killing my brothers had been as easy as writing a letter. One fatal attack would have been sufficient. I remember sending Byakuya's petals into my brothers no less than 7 times. Only a monster could've have done such a thing. They'd looked similar to ground beef when I'd finished...what have I become?
