*~*~*~*
Slipping into his target’s house, Cain frowned as he paused just inside of the dark kitchen and let his eyes adjust to the sudden lack of light. It looked as if all of the curtains in the house had been pulled shut tight, making his hackles raise as he swept his eyes around the room. Nothing seemed odd, so he left the kitchen, gun held pointing down as he stepped lightly on the floor boards, trying not to make them creak under his feet. Finding the first room, he looked in and found it empty of anyone.
Heading into the next room, he was surprised to find his first target sitting in a chair before a computer, the screen filled with a dancing screensaver of candy canes and mini Hanatorus. Ryuuken gazed at him from behind flashing glasses as he lifted up a lighter and lit the cigarette that was hanging from his mouth.
“Cain, youngest member of the Bounts and technopath, second generation,” Ryuuken drawled, the cherry glowing as he drew in the smoke. “I have to wonder why Jin Kariya sent someone so young and still so new to the world to take me out,” he mused, tapping the ash off of his cigarette before bringing it up to his mouth again.
“I’m not that young,” Cain snorted, bringing his weapon up and pointing it at Ryuuken, aiming carefully.
“Oh yes, your mother wasn’t exactly the best out there was she? She didn’t like your father and took it out on you by sending you to whatever boarding school would take you in just so you weren’t around to annoy her long list of husbands and boyfriends,” Ryuuken drawled, pushing a file over the top of the desk, looking amused about it all.
“How did you find that out?” Cain asked, his eyes narrowing as his hands tightened around the gun, Ryuuken snickering softly at him.
“You are not the only one with friends in high places. You and your co-workers have eluded capture through a mix of brains, abilities and having some powerful backing,” Ryuuken stated, gazing at Cain who was looking shell shocked. “Ah, I see Kariya hasn’t told you everything. Sit down, Cain-san. We must talk about what has been going on and what Kariya has apparently been hiding from you and yours.” Reaching out, he picked up his cell phone and tapped out a quick message while Cain sat on the chair before the desk, eyeing him. Yumichika swept in and flippinged the lights once he had closed the studies door behind him.
“So I take it new information has come up?” Yumichika asked as he perched on the edge of the desk. Cain’s eyes gazed at the gun that was sitting on the man’s hips before trailing upwards to the violet eyes that studied him in return.
“Indeed, there is new information. It seems as if Jin Kariya has been keeping information from his people, such as who was backing them up until yesterday,” Ryuuken drawled, eyes glittering brightly behind his glasses. Yumichika turned wide eyes towards him as he slipped off of the desk.
“You’re kidding me right?” he asked, almost as if he was about to fall over from the news. Ryuuken shook his head with a grim look on his face; his companion snarled and balled his hands into fists. “No leader should hold back any information, no matter how small it is.”
“That’s what I was thinking,” Ryuuken replied, Cain watching the two men with his eyes bouncing back and forth between them.
“What do you mean? Jin-san would never hide such things from us,” Cain defended, standing up from the chair and holding his gun out before him. Ryuuken raised an eyebrow and sat back in his chair, taking a long drag from his cigarette as Yumichika snorted and walked out of the study, muttering about making coffee.
“Listen to me, Cain-san, and listen well, because what I’m about to tell you comes from some very old friends of mine,” Ryuuken stated, sitting forward again to tap off the ash. “Let me start with Jin Kariya and what I was told by my friends. He was born 28 years ago in Germany to a couple who were rich and very powerful. He went to all the best schools, got all the best grades and graduated from college at age 23, about the same time he formed the Bounts.”
“But…he told all of us that his parents died and left him penniless, that he had to work for scholarships and was always looked at like a freak due to his coloring,” Cain said, resting his gun down onto his lap as he fell into the chair again.
“His parents are dead, but they left behind several businesses to him that were and still are run by a team of very good lawyers and business men,” Ryuuken stated, standing up as he snuffed his cigarette. Opening a file before him, he picked up an article and handed it to him. “The police who investigated their deaths couldn’t figure out if was accidental or on purpose.
“Either way, the deaths were ruled inconclusive and he ended up with everything at age 12, right about the time that he started to exhibit his own abilities. He also started to make contacts with very powerful people to help train said abilities, to train his mind to hold strong against other Talents. He wanted power, even as a young child, and as a child grew strong and smart as to how to get it,” he continued.
“He lied. He lied about it all,” Cain whimpered as Yumichika walked back in with three cups of steaming coffee. “How could he lie to us in such a way?” he asked as he looked up from the article.
“He lies because it’s easy to do and it got him what he wanted from you and the other members,” Yumichika stated, smiling with sympathy at the crushed look on the young mans face. “He’s a sociopath. And narcissistic to an amazing extent.”
“Let me finish telling the truth, telling you the information that Kariya has hidden from you,” Ryuuken stated, taking one cup as Cain took another with shaking hands. “The ones that backed you in most of your missions were the ones who are called the Council. They control the underworld of every Talent out there and protect the ones that need it.
“I know them because of my sister-in-law. Her name is Yourichi, and she is one of the top protectors. When I told her and Unohana, who is another close friend of mine, they told Yamamoto-sama, who is still the head of the Council,” he continued, putting his coffee aside. “He was far from happy and the one who hired you has been taken care of. How, I’m not sure. He’s probably being handed over to the Unit.”
“I see,” Cain said lowly, sipping his coffee before shivering. “We don’t have the backing for this mission, do we? This is pretty much a suicide mission, isn’t it?” he asked, looking up at the two men. The dark looks on their faces gave him his answer, making him a deep breath, eyes closed as he shivered again. “Why though? Why do this to us? He saved so many of us from our hellish lives, he gave us a real purpose and place to be.”
“Cain, I highly doubt that he did that out of any caring feelings for you guys,” Yumichika drawled, setting his cup to the side. “You were pawns to him, nothing more, nothing less. He’s using you as distractions so he can grab Ichigo, thinking that we don’t know about the plan.”
“So…not only has he lied to us all of these years, but he hopes we all die so he can have his damn boy toy?” Cain snarled, eyes flashing. “He told us that Ichigos ability hasn’t come out yet and that if we played our cards right, he would help us with our missions and plans. But I’ve seen the look in that slimy bastard’s eyes. He just wants to screw Ichigo, use him until he gets bored with your godson.”
“Will you tell us everything about your missions? Fill in the blanks for the Homicide Specialty Unit?” Yumichika asked, leaning against the desk again.
“Yeah. I will. I can tell you right now about my mission. I was supposed to shoot you with this specialized dart,” Cain said, pulling out the clip from his gun and handing it over to Yumichika. The man pulled out one dart, gazing at the yellow liquid within the clear capsule.
“What were you told about the liquid and what it would do?” Ryuuken asked as Yumichika handed it over with a knowing look on his face.
“That it would put you into a coma for a few months and fuck with your memories. Why?” Cain asked, jumping when Yumichika started to curse.
“That particular vile holds venom that can kill very fast. Ryo creates it, along with the liquid that you were told you had, but that one is a bright, neon pink, not piss yellow,” Yumichika snarled, Cain going pale.
”I’ve never…killed anyone. Spied on them, hacked their accounts and conned them silly, sure, but never killed,” he choked, diving for the trash can that Yumichika held out with a soft look. As he purged his stomach, Ryuuken and Yumichika shared a look and shook their heads sadly.
“Yamamoto-sama has offered you a place to live as long as you give over all of the information you have about everything, help hack your fellow Bounts accounts and testify against those we’re able to catch,” Ryuuken stated, Cain looking up with watery eyes and wet lips.
“I can. Sawatari…the older man, he’s my dad,” he husked, Yumichika stroking his hair.
“We’ll try to take him in alive but I can’t give you any promises.”
“Thank you.”
Across town, sitting in a chair as he waited for the woman who he was supposed to kill for getting in Jins way, Sawatari stared at the darts that were lying innocently on a molded pillow. The yellow liquid within the vials glowed a sickly color, telling the man exactly what he needed to know about it and its job. He could feel his old body complain about the fact that he wasn’t moving, but ignored it.
Sawatari knew that the mission had gone from a done deal to a suicide mission sometime in the last two days and Jin was starting to show his true face. He had no doubt that their leader wanted them to die or be caught when they tried to do their part of the mission. He also had no doubt that he would turn on all of them once he had his hands on Ichigo Kurosaki, leaving them to their fates, which made him worry for his sweet child.
He hadn’t known about Cain for so long that he just wanted to protect his child.
He should have left with him long ago, but he had worried about Kariyas revenge against them for leaving the Bounts. He knew that Jin had had very powerful backing but after reviewing the tapes from last night, he knew that the man had messed up with this latest mission and lost the backing.
Sawatari wondered if he had also lost his mind, his very sanity.
Shaking his head, he stood and walked to the window of the bull pen and gazed out to the street, watching people walk past the rather plain building that housed the Guardians base of operations. It was a simple three story building, the first floor holding meeting and file rooms. The second floor held the bull pen, offices and a couple of rooms that were used for photo processing and for when they need naps. The top floor held the forensic evidence in a large cooler for cold cases before they were able to move it to the Units storage, along with Szayel’s labs.
He had snuck in, knowing that there was no one there, the Unit detectives having taken the evidence to process in their labs, which had some of the newer equipment. All he had to do was wait for the one named Soi-Fon to arrive, which he knew would be any moment.
“Who the fuck are you?” came the snarled question from behind him. Turning, Sawatari smiled slightly as he gazed at the angry young woman and her companion, both of them pointing their guns at him.
“Soi-Fon and Toshiro Hitsugaya, a pleasure to actually meet you face to face. My name is Sawatari and I worked for Jin Kariya, the leader of the Bounts. I have much to tell you,” Sawatari introduced himself, moving to where his molded pad sat and once more took a seat. “Please, put your guns away. I’m hardly dangerous to a person right now,” he promised. Soi-Fon narrowed her eyes and slowly put her gun away and moved to sit down, Hitsugaya following behind her, not clipping his gun into its holster.
“You’re one of the technopaths that work for Jin, right?” Hitsugaya asked as Soi-Fon pulled out a small tape recorder from her desk drawer. Putting it down, she sat down behind her desk and gazed at him with dark eyes.
“Yes, I am. My name is Sawatari and I am a first generation technopath while my child is a second generation technopath,” he stated, the two across from him blinking in surprise.
“Child? Who is this child?” Soi-Fon asked, Sawatari sighing in response and rubbing at his face with one weathered hand.
“He is the technopath Cain, and yes, he’s the Bount’s Spy Bug,” he said, Hitsugaya pulling out his phone as it jingled lightly. Flipping it open, he looked at it and read over the text.
“The Bounts Mabashi and Ryo were caught,” he told Soi-Fon, getting a nod as Sawatari shook his own head. “We’ll be getting updates periodically. We weren’t expecting you to be here but please, continue to tell us what you came here to tell us,” he stated, voice hard.
“Calm down. First, knowing that the Homicide Specialty Unit and the Guardians, you know who is going against who due to your informants. Especially since Mabashis name wasn’t connected with Orihimes, I can easily guess that she has gotten away. She had been paired with him to gather what evidence they could that was stored in the Units building,” Sawatari started, shrugging. “Ryo was to scan the Units archives near the first prescient. Cain was to use a mix that would have put Ryuuken Ishida under for a few months as it messed with his memories, but I fear that Jin had Ryo give him a different mixture.”
“What do you mean by that?” Hitsugaya asked, eyes narrowing at him. The older man leant forward and picked up a vial dart.
“Be careful with this please,” Sawatari said, handing it over to the younger male. “The liquid inside is a very deadly venom mix that can kill faster then a black mambas bite to the face. I was to have a mix that would kill slowly, allowing me to get away and you to never know I was there,” he continued, slumping back into his seat, looking every inch the old man that he was.
“I see. I have no doubt that your child is fine and alive with Ryuuken-san and Yumichika-san telling him all about the information and the truth that we were given,” Hitsugaya soothed, his partner taking over jotting down notes. She had never been good with emotions and was generally uncomfortable with them. “Please, continue on.”
“Yes, alright. Ugaki, who is known to you as The Professor, is to go after Shuuhei, Hisagi and his body guard, while Go Koga is going after Uryuu Ishida,” he continued, thinking hard about what he was talking about. “Yoshi is going after Sado Yasutaro, and the twins are going after Byakuya Kukichi. It seems that he, along with you, Soi-Fon-san have annoyed Jin to the point of wanting you both dead.”
“Why am I not surprised?” she asked, tapping a message into her IPhone to send the information to those who needed it. Sawatari laughed lowly and smoothed a hand over his chest.
“To move on, Yoshino is going to be going after young Hanatoru Yamada, I believe. And finally, Jin plans to go after Ichigo Kurosaki himself. I have no doubt that what he plans for young Kurosaki-san is far from good. Kariya is not a good man and he’s so damn charismatic that he makes what ever he does seem fine,” he said, his eyes dark and angry. “My son worshipped the ground that he walked on at one time, and so did I.”
“What changed that fact for you?” Hitsugaya asked, eyes a dark aqua as he gazed at the man before him. To his eyes, Sawatari was a tired, old man who wanted to do nothing more then to protect his innocent child who had been blinded by pretty words and empty promises, and to set his wrongs right.
“It started about a year ago, when we were given the details on the Kurosaki case. He was willing to kill two pre-teen children without batting an eye and then he tried to convince me to do it for him. I was able to get out of it, and he sent Ugaki and Ryo to do the deed instead,” Sawatari said, pulling out three flash drives and placing them down upon the desk. “These hold copies of every single mission, including details and final reports. I suppose being the only other person with access to Jin’s computer cam in hand huh?” he asked, voice humorless as he laughed bitterly. “I included his personal diary but I do not know what he has in it. I can also tell you every knook and cranny in our home base and where we own property.”
“This will help us immensely, Sawatari-san,” Hitsugaya stated, gazing at his phone as it rang. Opening the text, he smiled. “It seems as if your child has also turned on Kariya after Ryuuken-san was able to speak with him. He’s there now, talking some more.”
“That is good,” Sawatari breathed, feeling the worry lift from his shoulders. “I knew that you would know that we would be coming after you and yours. If I may, can you tell me just who told you?” he asked, relaxing into the chair under him.
“Ryuuken-san called a couple of old friends who are connected to a group that I’m sure you know,” Hitsugaya stated, smiling when Sawatari nodded his head. “The Council is run by a man named Yamamoto who has connections to the Kurosakis in someway. He was very pissed off about what had happened to the family and removed the Councils backing of the Bounts and then called the Homicide Specialty Unit and gave us the needed information about the mission,” he continued, shrugging.
“There were notes about who would possibly flip and who would try to go down in a blaze of glory,” Soi-Fon stated. “Using those notes we were able to form quick plans on how to deal with each of you. We weren’t expecting you to come to our bull pen but rather our weapons range.”
“I didn’t even know you had one. Where is it?” Sawatari asked in curiosity. Soi-Fon raised an eyebrow and tilted her head to the side.
“Down in the basement actually,” she said, shrugging one shoulder. “So we’ll go over these flash drives and check out the information contained on them,” she stated, standing up and picking up the flash drives.
“For now, Sawatari-san, let’s go over what you know and what you’ve done while in the service of Jin Kariya,” Hitsugaya said.
