Chapter 24
Tosen could feel Grimmjow's reiatsu nearby, yet he stood as still as a statue with a slight frown on his lips. He sensed deception in the cold depths of the cavern, and he couldn't help but suspect he was being led along into a trap. He didn't have time for this game, and it was becoming increasingly dull giving chase to this disloyal espada. There were others as well, their energies seeping out just enough to toy with his senses, all scattered in different directions. The shinigami appeared to be helping him now. His frown deepened with disgust.
Very well. If that's the way they wanted to play this, he would just have to disrupt their plans. Tosen hid his own aura and targeted a different reiatsu and moved in that direction. He would take care of the hunters in hiding instead of taking the bait. A hostage would do nicely, and knowing the shinigami's situation, they would do just about anything to save their own right now. Surely giving up a useless espada would not hurt them so much as long as they were allowed a little more freedom for the time being. He made no sound, his steps so light that even the rocks beneath his feet did not shift as he moved closer to his target.
Tosen made sure to keep focused on more than just his objective. None were on the move as he closed the gap between himself and Rangiku Matsumoto. He knew her reiatsu as well as any other he encountered in his lifetime. He had not chosen to go after her because he thought she was weaker than any of the others. It was her own rotten luck that she was the closest to his current position, and with no zanpakuto by her side, he was sure there wouldn't be much of a fight. A man of honor like himself would not kill those that were helpless with no fight in them, but he would do what he must to bring Aizen's fallen espada back.
His progress took an edge as he stopped and lifted his head up high as if to challenge a presence. The darkness he already lived within somehow grew denser, and he felt a slight chill down his spine. He feared nothing, not even death, but this feeling had been gradually following him for a while, lightly raking in his skull as if to tease him without giving itself away. Before it was only the energy that Hueco Mundo itself gave off naturally; a coldness that was part of this world that was home to hollows and other nasty residents.
Tosen took pause and searched, reaching out to catch the hidden reiatsu that he suspected was there. No, it was more than suspicion. He knew there was someone lurking, melding their own energy to the aura of Hueco Mundo itself. The sky and the earth, even the deep embedded rock of the caverns where he stood was part of the mask that was hiding the one that was creeping closer by the minute. Tosen cursed himself for not trying to detect this more closely before now. He was too intent on his orders from Aizen, and now when he was so close the snake was starting to show itself.
"Gin!" Tosen spat the name like a curse.
It was then that Rangiku screamed somewhere ahead. It was more surprise than terror by the sound and Tosen knew that Gin was the cause of it. Just what the hell was he up to, and why was he here to begin with? Tosen would get the answers he needed, even if blood had to be drawn to get it. He sped forward, no longer bothering with stealth. Her screams died down, but Tosen clearly heard her cursing the man that had hold of her. Gin muttered something to her, and even with his heightened hearing the words were inaudible to him as he stepped inside the nook of the rocky passageway they were in.
"Hello, hello," Gin said, voice a cheerful pitch.
"Forget the pleasantries, Gin. Why are you here? Is there trouble in Los Noches?"
"Not yet, but I'm sure trouble will come soon enough."
"What is that supposed to mean?"
"Gin, let go of me!" Rangiku yelled and squirmed in his arms.
"Shh, my dear. Let the gentlemen speak without interrupting."
"Bastard!"
"I am sorry, Tosen. Don't mind her outburst. She has every right to hate me, so it's understandable that she be so distressed in my arms."
"That doesn't interest me, Gin. Explain to me why you're here." Tosen's hand rested on the hilt of his zanpakuto.
"A few reasons, but why does it matter? You're obviously having a hard time capturing Grimmjow on your own. Should you really question if a comrade comes to give you aid?"
"I don't ever need your help, Gin, much less for such a menial task as this."
"Oh boy. Your anger is really showing through today, Tosen. It's so refreshing to see when you're so serene all the time."
Tosen's jaw clenched with annoyance. If anything Gin was making things more difficult now. He concentrated his sense and felt that Grimmjow had not moved, but a few of the shinigami were now slowly moving from their previous positions. He was not worried about a attack; the shinigami would be simple to take care of. Gin though, there was something off about this encounter. Simply put, he should not be here, yet there he stood with a squirming Rangiku in his arms. The grip on his zanpakuto tightened.
"No more games, Gin. Why are you here?!"
"You are a smart one, Tosen. That's always been a fact, but really, the hero worship you have for Aizen is quite sickening, and sadly ironic given the situation."
"You dare to speak to me like that, Gin?!" His blade slide free of it's sheath with ease as he lifted it in challenge. "Let this lesson be quick. I have a job to finish here and you're getting in my way!"
"My lovely Rangiku. As much as I'm enjoying holding you in my arms, I'm afraid I must release you now."
Rangiku gasped as she fell and looked wide eyed at Gin. Even now her stomach fluttered with her love from the past, but it was twisted with strong feelings of anger and hate. She was frozen, watching as his zanpakuto slid free from his sheath. She was utterly confused with he and Tosen's interaction with each other. The two of them were working together with Aizen, yet they were facing each other like enemies. This was more than just a disagreement. When the two of them ran at one another, swords clashing, she finally broke away and ran.

"What the fuck is going on?" Grimmjow said as he sat immobile in the hainawa spell Urahara had put him in to lure Tosen.
"Quiet, bait," Urahara said as he slipped out of hiding with Isshin.
"Hey!"
"Let him loose. I have a feeling our little trap has become pointless now," Isshin said and sighed soft.
There was a battle going on somewhere in the cavern and oddly enough it was between two enemies of theirs. Isshin wasn't sure what was going on, but it complicated the plan they had in place to get the zanpakuto back. The reiatsu was thick in the air and the sounds of battle echoed all though the cavern. Karin, Yuzu and Nel were safe with Chad, Renji and Rukia. The others were purposely scattered throughout the cavern, but now everyone was on the move, most toward the battle. Was this fight a ruse to lure them out in turn? Isshin cursed. It was working if that was the case.
"Dammit, this is a mess," Isshin muttered and looked over to see Urahara removing the kidou from Grimmjow. "Can you explain this to us, Grimmjow?"
"How am I supposed to know?"
"That is Gin and Tosen fighting. This reiatsu is unmistakable."
"Maybe they'll kill each other then," the blue haired espada said as he stood and pointlessly tried to brush dirt off of his pants. He stopped when he saw he was only smearing the filth more into the white cloth.
"That's not the point," Isshin said.
"Heh, so what do we do now then?" Grimmjow asked.
"Good question," Urahara said tapping his cane lightly on the rocky ground. He stopped when he saw Rukia's slight form running their way.
"We felt the pressure from our position and the girls started to get worried. What is going on?"
"Not sure ourselves," Isshin said. Another far off explosion resonated and the ground beneath their feet trembled. "We can't just stand here though."
"No, we can't." Urahara looked at Grimmjow. "Tosen was the only one pursuing you, so it's safe to say Gin is here for a alternative reason. The fact that they're fighting is enough to figure that out."
"Guess so."
"You said most the arrancar are against Aizen. Do you get that same feeling from Gin?"
"Not really, but I haven't really tried. I hate the man, that's all I can tell you."
"We don't have time to discuss this now," Isshin said and looked to Rukia. "Go back to Renji and Chad, keep the girls safe."
Isshin ran toward the battle, Urahara and Grimmjow close behind. It was all they could do now. Running and hiding would not accomplish anything, and he was damn tired of it. He was at a strong pace when he ran into Rangiku. He grabbed her in quick reflex before she tumbled to the ground. Her body was tense, but he kept his hold on her in fear she would fall again. Her complexion was pale and her eyes were wild and troubled. She started to speak when the cavern shook violently again. He jumped back with her in his arms to avoid pieces of hard rock that rained down from overhead.
"They trying to bring the whole fucking place down on us?" Grimmjow growled, narrowly avoiding getting his head smashed by a falling rock.
"We should keep moving if that's the case," Urahara said, eyes up.
"Gin... He grabbed me, but I think he's really here for Tosen," Rangiku said. "They started to argue. I'm not sure what's going on."
"Ah, sounds like the evil sides nest isn't so happy anymore," Urahara said.
"Regardless, Gin is still a enemy," Isshin answered him, but he still wondered what exactly was going on. He continued toward the fight with his three allies in tow.

Gin smiled, even as blood dripped from the wound in his side. There was no denying he was enjoying this fight, and Tosen was getting increasingly angry by his carefree attitude of their battle. Gin dodged a strike from his zanpakuto and blocked another that came in quick succession. Tosen's attacks where becoming more desperate and each time his blow did not make contact he growled with frustration. It was becoming easier to predict his attacks. Gin side stepped as the deadly tip of his blade thrust toward his chest and sent his own out, cutting across the flesh of his opponent's arm. Tosen grunted in pain and jumped back to lightly land on a rock formation that put his position above Gin's.
"Stop fighting me like this is some game, Gin!"
"Is that what I'm doing? I thought I was trying to kill you," he said and laughed soft.
"Traitor!"
"Mn, perhaps, but maybe I was never on your side to begin with." He tilted his head up to watch Tosen's face.
"Bastard. I should have known you weren't good enough to be at Aizen's side."
"There's that misguided worship again. It brings a tear to the eye to know you admire a man that has ordered me to kill you."
Tosen sneered. "Do not try to befuddle me with your lies!"
The attack came swiftly and Gin narrowly avoided getting his throat cut open. The power of Tosen's landing made the cavern floor shake beneath their feet. Gin took to the air and sent his blade out again, missing his target by inches. He was aware they were building an audience of shinigami, but he wasn't expecting any attacks from their side. If they were thinking anything like he was, they were waiting to see who was going to lose, or if they would kill each other. This made him smile more as his zanpakuto extended in another attack, glancing off the rocks Tosen was on just seconds before. He felt his presence behind him in time to shift his body with graceful ease and turned to block his blade.
"I think I'll take your head off so Aizen can keep it as a trophy when I'm done here," Gin mused, smirking when the pressure of his blade pushed harder against his own. "He does want you dead, Tosen. Believe what you will. Perhaps thinking I'm lying to you will give you peace before you die."
"Snakes lie, Gin. I'll be the one killing you here. I won't even use my bankai. You're not worthy of it."
Tosen vanished and reappeared behind him. Gin dodged again, but felt the sting of another cut along his shoulder. He was getting more determined now and Gin watched as Tosen leapt up and extended his sword arm out to his side to perform his Benihiko attack. He had seen that attack several time during the war and knew what to expect, but he would waste no time and allow him to finish it. He sent Shinso out, the blade extending faster than the eye could see toward Tosen's exposed chest, aiming for the heart. Too late he realized his mistake as he felt Tosen's blade push through his back, his own zanpakuto going through empty space where Tosen had just been standing.
Gin was aware of the pain, but it was Rangiku he was most focused on. He heard her scream his name and saw her movement out of the corner of his eye. She was running toward them, her hands up in preparation for a kido attack that he knew would only put her in danger of Tosen's retaliation. He fell when the blade left his body and weakly clutched at the hilt of his sword, eyes blurred with pain as he forced his head around to watch Tosen move toward her. So many voice were yelling for her to stop, but it was like she couldn't hear any of them.
"Foolish woman," Tosen said and raised his zanpakuto to take her down.
"You will not touch her," Gin whispered and used the rest of his strength to send Shinso out for the kill.
The strike was true, and Tosen's body took a few more steps as if it didn't know the head was no longer attached before he fell in a heap in front of Rangiku who was still running desperately toward him. Gin's vision was wavering, but it wasn't so bad seeing such beauty if it was to be his last vision. He couldn't help but smile.
AN: Yes, another long wait for a chapter. Also, it feels a bit short to me, but fighting scenes are always hard for me to write. Honestly, I feel that I suck at it, but I try. LOL. Hope you enjoyed. If not, maybe the next chapter will be better. I am determined to finish this fic, no matter how long it takes me to get it written. Thanks to all who are enjoying this little story of mine. Until next time.
PS: I just got a review and made a small edit in the end there cause what I had written caused some confusion and I could see why, lol. Tosen (obviously blind) wasn't seeing Rangiku running toward him, Gin was. Thanks for pointing it out Roomi-chan :)
