Chapter 23 - Not Ichigo
Uryuu opened his eyes, and turned to his side, grunting. He wasn't dead, and that was a surprise, considering his father had hit him in the chest with an arrow. He was sure he was going to die when the thing pierced him, but he didn't, and for once he was glad he had been wrong about something; his father wasn't so merciless as to kill his own son after all. He smiled, already being able to sense his powers back, even though they were weak considering the effort he had put into avoiding his father's attacks by running around the room for what seemed like an eternity now. He was exhausted but he wasn't useless anymore, finally he had the power to help the others save Ichigo. He slowly pushed himself off the floor but his legs felt weak. Ignoring his body's obviously weakened state he decided to leave the hospital, and after getting some rest he could go and train by himself. He didn't need his father, and besides, he still couldn't forgive him for all the past mistakes. He was however grateful for the help, and he'd be sure to properly thank him next time they would meet. He dragged his tired body to the door but just as he opened it he saw his him standing there, hand in the air as if he was about to open the door himself.
Ryuken walked inside and closed the door. Before Uryuu would leave, the man had a few things he wanted to say to him. "I see you are awake. How are you feeling?" "Tired, but otherwise just fine. Thank you... for everything." "You practically forced me to help you," said Ryuken, an annoyed expression on his face. "I had no other choice. Now, if you'll excuse me, I believe I need a shower badly, and some food, to get my strength back, perhaps some sleep too." "Next time use Sacred Bite instead of Quintuple Binding Frames. You're too soft, and that might be your downfall one day." Uryuu merely grunted and walked out, looking forward to a hot shower and some food. He couldn't remember the last time he had been this hungry. He was happy, his powers were back and it felt surreal, it was almost too good to be true and a part of him feared that it was all a dream and that he'd wake up only to see how utterly powerless he was. His expression turned grim, as soon as Ichigo entered his thoughts. He couldn't help but wonder how he was doing, or if he was still alive. He felt his heart painfully constrict and he hated it, he hated himself for caring so much. After his grandfather's death he changed, he cared less about others in general, and he started to avoid getting close to other people. Closeness meant more pain when the person he was close to suffered and for a few years he was mostly alone. His heart had felt numb until he started getting close to Ichigo, then Rukia, followed by Orihime and Chad. In time, he got to the point where he'd willingly sacrifice his own life for any of them, and not just because it was a matter of honor, but because he really cared about them. Perhaps it was better this way, instead of going through life but not exactly living it.While Uryuu was heading to his own house, Isshin was Sunpo-ing through Karakura, his destination none other than Urahara's Shop. The moment he got home and saw Kon he knew something had happened that day, and he was furious. Hollows he could detect, feel, but humans attacking his son wasn't something he took into consideration before. He was feeling a bit bad for probably scaring Kon, since by the time he got out the door and left, the Mod Soul was shivering like a leaf in the clinic where he had dragged him and forced him to spill what he was hiding. He almost considered restraining Kon and lock him up in a place where no one could harm him but he knew he couldn't do that. And besides, if Aizen didn't take him when he sent the Espadas to take Ichigo, then he most likely had no use for his son's human body. After a while he finally landed in front of the shop and entered, his ire growing with each passing second, not at Urahara himself but at his own uselessness. He couldn't do a thing and all that was left was to wait for Urahara to open the portal. He went straight to the room where he knew the man was working, and as expected, he was there, sitting at the computer.
"How much longer till you open the portal?" he asked, almost startling Urahara who didn't even notice someone else was in the room. "I can't say exactly, but you'll be the first to know once I find out for sure." His eyes never left the screen even as he talked, completely focused on what he was doing. Isshin felt anger, the feeling of uselessness returning tenfold. He clenched his fists tighter and looked at Urahara with a bit of... hate. Yes, hate was the right word, he somewhat hated the man for not being smarter, faster, for not being able to open the portal right at that moment. "Perhaps you need to try harder," he said through clenched teeth, but immediately regretted what he had just spoken as the last word left his mouth. "I'm sorry for taking so long, I will work harder from now on." Even though Isshin was regretting what he said, somehow he couldn't apologize, so he turned around and left. He ran into Tessai on his way out and after they greeted each other, Isshin was stopped in his tracks by Tessai's voice just as he was about to leap on a rooftop. "He hasn't eaten nor slept in two days, I'm surprised he can even think considering he must have no energy left. He really is trying his best, so please don't be so hard on him," said Tessai then left the former Shinigami alone and entered the Shop, hoping once again that he could get Urahara's attention enough to make him eat something before he ended up getting sick or before he collapsed from exhaustion. Isshin's guilt only grew stronger and he almost turned back to apologize but changed his mind. There was no point in doing that now, since he would surely do it properly once the whole nightmare would be over.As soon as Isshin left, Kon staggered back to his room. He thought Isshin was truly scary, he was nothing like the idiotic father he pretended to be on a daily basis. As soon as he got back to his room, Rukia burst through the door, questioning him about what the man wanted and what exactly did he say. He saw no harm in telling her, so he relayed to her their entire conversation. "Now you know, so I'm going to sleep," he mumbled and turned around after unceremoniously flopping on the bed.
Rukia gave him a strange look. "You're not even going to change?" "Too tired," he whispered and covered himself with the blanket. She decided not to press the matter any further and her eyes darted to her once very comfortable and beloved bed. "In that case, I think I'll go to sleep too, in here," but Kon wasn't paying attention, in fact, Rukia thought he was probably half asleep already. She walked to the closet and opened it fast, ready to jump in it immediately, then she screamed, startling Kon enough to make him jump out of bed, in a confused state, wondering what the hell was happening and who was attacking. However, when he looked to see towards what Rukia was pointing, he almost screamed as well, but only because he was genuinely surprised. "Toshiro!" "Shut it already, you're making my ears hurt, and it's Captain Hitsugaya to you!" the white haired small Shinigami admonished, a look of annoyance crossing his face momentarily before he relaxed once again and put his head on the pillow. "C-captain, w-why are you here?" Rukia asked. "Trying to sleep, that's what!" he snapped at her, starting to get annoyed at the ruckus they were causing. "Ichi-nii, is everything alright?" a worried voice was heard from behind the door. They all froze, like a deer caught in the headlights. Kon nervously scratched his head, trying to figure out something fast before she decided to come in and check on him. "I'm coming in!" "NO! I'm changing!" Kon pathetically screamed. "I almost fell, but don't worry, nothing's wrong, go back to sleep." "Oh, ok then, good night Ichii-nii." "Good night Yuzu." Rukia and Hitsugaya both released the breaths they didn't even knew they were holding once they heard her walk away from the door. They really had to stop talking so loud, or scream for that matter. "Captain, what are you doing here?" "What do you think I'm doing here Kuchiki? Obviously trying to sleep, with not much success I might add." Rukia was about to say more but Toshiro simply glared at her and closed the closet's door. "We'll talk tomorrow, now rest, that's an order." Rukia walked out of the room in a daze, not really being able to believe what she had just seen. Perhaps she had been dreaming. Once in the girls' room she sat on her bed then curled under the blankets, waiting for sleep to claim her so that her mind would get some rest from all the turmoil it was always in. Kon collapsed on his bed as soon as the white haired kid told them to sleep. He didn't care what he was doing there anyway, all he wanted was to get some rest. When he got out of bed the next morning he still felt tired, and annoyed. He was in a foul mood and he wasn't happy at all. He was certainly not looking forward to going to school that day. He took his shirt off, wanting to get a cold shower in order to clear his mind but right then Rukia flung the door opened, startling him.
"I-I'm s-sorry!" she stuttered, embarrassed that she had entered without knocking on the door first, and by doing so seeing him half naked. The door to the closet opened fast, the occupant clearly bothered by the noise, making both of them wince. He was already dressed in his usual Shinigami attire, obviously having awakened before the two of them. "To answer the question from last night, I heard what happened yesterday and I decided to make sure myself that such an event won't happen again. I'll be sleeping here and I don't want to hear another word of this. Got it?" Both Rukia and Kon nodded, equally in shock. Rukia looked longingly at her former bed and almost whimpered. It was the only place where she felt comfortable and now the Captain had stolen her spot. If it was anyone else she would've argued, but as things were, she simply gave up, for now. That spot was hers and she'd never completely give it up. "Good, stop wasting time and get going!" He almost barked at them, seeing how they were frozen on their spots, then leaped on the window's frame. "I'll be waiting outside." "Captain, are you going with us?" asked Rukia. "I'll only walk you to school, then Matsumoto will pick you up when you're done. We have training to do so you're in charge with protecting the Mod Soul. Next time you sense a Hollow, leave it to Yumichika or Ikkaku. Now move it." Both Kon and Rukia hurried to change and get ready. Kon was a bit worried since he didn't do his homework, but he was confident he'd manage somehow, maybe copy it from someone during one of the breaks. School was as annoying as ever, kids talking about pointless things, girls always covering the beautiful breasts that Kon wanted so badly to see and the Keigo guy as talkative as ever. Kon was really beginning to wonder how come Ichigo was friends with him, since all he wanted to do was punch him in the face. He was also wondered where the Quincy was, since he hadn't seen him in a few days, but, like on cue, Uryuu stepped inside the class and sat on his usual spot. There was something different about him but the Mod Soul wasn't exactly sure what that was. He never noticed however the strange looks that Tatsuki gave him once in a while. Class was boring as usual, and he didn't really understand much of it anyway, so after it ended he went to the rooftop after Uryuu called him out. The Quincy was already there, waiting, and when Kon opened the door he turned around to face him. "Has anything happened the past few days while I was away?" "Some goons were after Ichigo, but it's all good now, so don't worry about it. Where were you anyway?" "I got my Quincy powers back." Kon stared at him in shock, from what he understood it was impossible to get them back, but he was glad, really glad, the stronger their side was, the higher were the chances of them winning the war. "I'm glad," he finally said and then he smiled. Uryuu put his hand on the Mod Soul's shoulder."I'll be away for a while, I must train, so be carefully." Kon pried away from the hand, put his hands inside his pockets and walked away. "Of course I'll be careful, I'm Kon-sama, Kon-sama you hear me?" Uryuu almost chuckled, something he didn't do very often. Yes, the Mod Soul would be just fine. They never realized Tatsuki was on the stairs, nor that she had heard Ichigo refer to himself as Kon. To her, it was painfully obvious that whoever was pretending to be Ichigo wasn't actually him. The last time she saw him was when he was fighting a blue haired man on the streets of Karakura. He could tell the other wasn't human, and that what Ichigo was doing wasn't normal either. It was strange, and she often wandered if it had been a dream, because no normal human could fly, nor survive the hits her childhood friend had received. She feared for his life back then, but she didn't have the courage to go out there and help him. Leaving aside the fact that her friend would've absolutely gotten angry, her legs felt weak and she doubted she would've been of any help even if she went, the battle taking place at that moment being on a whole different level than her usual fights. She watched, with wide horrified eyes as some sort of energy attack hit Ichigo, then there was an explosion, and when she woke up again, they were both gone, the only proof that something even happened there being the hole in the ground, as well as splattered blood on the concrete. She hurried to Ichigo's house, wanting to see if he was alright, but just as she arrived there, she saw him going inside, and he didn't look injured, it was like nothing had ever happened. She was puzzled, but she didn't want to disturb anyone so late at night so she went home, decided to find out exactly what had happened the next day after a long serious talk with Ichigo.
However, he didn't go to school that day, nor the next, and Tatsuki was starting to worry. She was decided to go to his house if he didn't appear the third day either, but he did, and when she saw him, she had a strange feeling, like she wasn't looking at Ichigo, but at someone else. She couldn't explain why it felt that way but it did and she watched him with suspicious eyes for a few days, until she followed him to the rooftop and heard him refer to himself as Kon. It was what she needed, she finally had enough proof to confront the one pretending to be Ichigo. She hurried back to class though, there was not enough time, but during the next break she would have a talk with him, no matter what. After the class with their homeroom teacher was over, "Ichigo" got up and Tatsuki followed him. He also heard Uryuu telling their teacher how he'd be taking a few days off due to some family problems he was having. It pissed her off, Uryuu knew, and probably some of the others too, Orihime and Chad were always hanging around Ichigo, more so than in the past. It was as if they had their own clique. She was sick of it, she was their friend as well, she cared about them more than she cared about any of her other friends and she wanted to know what was going on. She stalked him on the hallway, then grabbed his shirt to stop him. When he turned around and looked at her in surprise, she snapped. "You! Who are you?" "W-what?!" he stuttered, and that only added to her anger. "Ichigo would never act like that, so I'm asking you who are you," she yelled, not being able to control herself any longer. Mizuiro and Keigo soon joined her, both wearing a shocked expression on their faces. "Arisawa-san, what are you saying?" Mizuiro questioned incredulously. "I'm saying that he isn't Ichigo!" Kon was panicking. He turned around, wanting to leave, but Tatsuki grabbed his arm and forced him to turn around, then punched him in the face. The hit had been hard, so hard he went backwards, hitting his head on the window and breaking it in the process. Some people gasped in shock, and Keigo suddenly grabbed Tatsuki, afraid she might attack again. "We're sorry, we'll be going now," said Mizuiro and both of them dragged a very angry Tatsuki out of there. Kon cursed out loud and touched the cut, wanting to see how bad it was. There was blood, and quite a lot of it. He thought that perhaps he should go to the infirmary. Meanwhile, Tatsuki was trying to free herself from Keigo's grasp. The bastard had sneaked behind her and imobilized her arms with his own, making her unable to move away from him. There was that and also the fact that she didn't want to hurt Keigo too badly to free herself. "Tatsuki, calm down, I'm with you on this one, I believe you," he whispered in her ear and she suddenly stopped struggling. "It must have something to do with those guys dressed in black running around fighting monsters all over Karakura Town." "Asano-san, what are you saying?" asked Mizuiro confused. "I'm serious! I've been telling you for a while now about these fighters wearing black who kill monsters but you refuse to believe me!" Keigo screamed at Mizuiro in anger. "One more reason to beat him to a pulp until he tells us what the hell is going on!" said Tatsuki. "Arisawa-san, you're angry and we understand, but you can't do that," said Mizuiro, hoping they would finally be able to calm her down. The last thing they needed was a furious Tatsuki on a rampage. Keigo nodded. "I'm with Mizuiro on this one. I plan on finding out the truth, but doing it your way is not right." Tatsuki slumped in his arms, tired. At least someone believed her, and that meant she wasn't crazy. "I understand, please let me go now." Keigo and Mizuiro looked at each other then she was set free. Her eyes were set on the window, as if she was looking somewhere in the distance. "When I find him I'll make Ichigo tells me everything, I'm sick of watching from the sidelines."TBC
