Chapter 21- Back Into Your Arms
Although my time under the direction of the Royal Guard had come to an end, I was sent forward as an extension of their abilities and knowledge. Each of the dismissed recruits waited around to watch the Senkaimon close for the final time, sealing the bridge between the two worlds. Knowing that I was the last to walk through, I too turned to watch the mirage-like opening slowly dissipate before our eyes. It felt like a string had been cut, the link that we all had shared with the world had been severed before we knew it; leaving our heads fuzzy. All that was left were memories of a place unlike any other and secrets that were burned into our minds but would never spill from our lips. A hard and lonely life that we each took on to gain a wisdom, skills and strength that could only come with that solitude and comradely of the training that we received.
The moon lit up the night sky, only letting the occasional star stand out from its brilliance. Now armed with a newfound confidence, we slowly began to make our way back to our respected division that we had left, some longer than others.
"What are we supposed to do?" Asked one young shinigami in distress, "Act like nothing has changed?" he questioned out again to the crowd.
"You are to return to your divisions," Captain Yamamoto ordered out as he walked up the narrow path toward the 30 or so of us walking in a pack, "Your living quarters should be as you left them and you will be expected to report to your Captains at daylight." Finally he stopped at the edge of the area that we had been gathered around,"You will be expected to continue on as if you never left. You will blend back in with your respected divisions, knowing that you may be called forth for special missions that will require your expertise. " he paused almost looking through us. "As you have been told the knowledge that you poses could be of great benefit in the wrong hands and that is why you now feel that foggy feeling in your head. As a precaution, when the bridge between the two worlds was sealed, your tie to it and the captains was also broken. This is what has created the feeling of uneasiness that you all share right now, a feeling that your memories are fading away."
I grabbed at the wooden seal that had been bestowed to me before leaving through my shirt as I gazed around me to see the look of distress fall over everyone around. It was like watching someone being drained of their powers before my eyes while they dropped to their knees each placing their hands to their heads. They all crouched down not in pain but almost catatonic for a single moment leaving me exposed. His blank expression now humbled as he looked on to me, my body trembling as I was the only one left standing in the shadow of the great leader. My place as the liaison the Royal Guard now revealed only to him and his lieutenant and accepted with the raise of his eyebrow, nothing more. There was no sound other then the soft rattle of the wind through the trees below and the commanding instruction of our Head Captain that continued once more.
"Be assured that although you will not be able to recall them at will, they still remain engrained in your mind, able to be released only at times of need. Your bonds and partnerships will remain, you will be able to perform at the same level that you had been trained to but you will have no memory of the tactics that it took to get you there. It will feel as if you have been given these specialties as a freely as a gift." he paused dropping the end of his zanpakuto, cocooned in the form of an old walking stick, to the ground twice.
The loud sounds eerily echoed off of the columns that surrounded the area seeming to snap everyone out to he state that they had been in. Like a spell had been lifted they stood up with a sense of direction and duty that they didn't speak of. I silently walked in the mix as we made our way back to our divisions, listening in as they spoke of the good times that they had, as if they had just been away on a long training mission.
A gift indeed," I mumbled off at their naiveté.
Quickly the conversations faded as they branched off, returning to their divisions, until only a few were left in the long walk to the last few division entrances.
"I'm glad that you are back" said Koga, now at my side.
I shook my head with a sigh, "Listen Koga" I started to interject, "Just because I'm back..."
"I didn't mean anything mean anything by it!" he cut me off, "I'm just happy to see you back!" pausing as we entered back into the beauty and calmness of the thirteenth division. "No matter what, we do have a history that you can't run away from" he said in typical Koga fashion, wanting to assert his dominance over the situation.
I rolled my eyes at his comment and picked up the pace attempting to spare him from himself, "Just don't say another word Koga" I begged.
He stopped as I continued to walk on, "I really do care for you, you know," he yelled out to me, "One day you will have no choice but to see that!"
His cold words sent chills down my back and me racing for the security of my old living quarters. I slid the door shut and tossed my bags onto the ground wanting to wash off the uneasy feeling that seemed to come with every interaction with Koga. I could no longer blame his actions on his status, a spoiled aristocrat that I had dismissed in the past. He had grow into something else, something as evil as a hollow in the way. More and more I began to look at him as a snake in the grass and I could no longer doubt his ill will and bad intentions. What ever his reasons, I knew that from that point on I had to be mindful of him to protect all who I had held so dear.
My room was unusually warm as I paced from one side to the other, thinking of uncomfortable situation that Koga had forced upon us again and the future that Kisuke and I still had to figure out. A thought that I had long sense placed in the back of my mind now came racing forward again. He was a captain now and we had to take every precaution for secrecy if we really wished to live our lives as together; especially with Kogas eyes upon us. The anxiety that I felt when I saw him in his captains robes for the first time the night of the Winter Festival flooded the gates of my mind leaving me to question how we could possibly make this work. I desperately wanted to trust in his word, that he would find a way for our lives to become one. That he would have a plan for us to no longer spend lonely nights apart, even if it was in secret. I knew that he loved me with all of his heart but was it enough to have endured all that I had selfishly done to him over the years only to break some of the most restrictive rules of our positions as shinigami. A captain could not marry, they could not hold on to deep seeded love in fear that it would shake their confidence in battle leaving them and their fellow comrades in arms venerable and weak. I could only hope that our storybook struggle brought him the same end pass that it had for me; allowing me to see that no matter the rules. I wished to be with him and was willing to sacrifice what was needed in order for that to happen. My heart fluttered with the anticipation of our reunion but again I was unsure of how to make it happen without drawing attention to us. Our situation and now changed so drastically as we now found ourselves both wanting to be together, but the rules of the world as we knew it kept us apart. It would have to be an unorthodox relationship but I knew if anyone could figure out a way to make it happen, it would be his creative mind. He was always able to ignite a true brilliance when pushed to the test of something that he desperately wanted or needed.
The humidity began to rise in my room as I became excited by the reality of being back in the arms of my lover, not for one or two nights but indefinitely. A happiness as pure as the laughter of a small child filled me as I could no longer wait to see the glimmer in his soft grey eyes. Glancing up through the skylight, I realized that I still had the cover of night to protect me if so dared to seek him out. After a few moments of a one sided debate with myself, I decided to do just that as steadied my nerves and made way for the door. I noticed a muffled presence appeared to close in as I grabbed the edge of the door and began to slide it back revealing a tall man shrouded by a hooded black robe. Startled, I stumbled back falling over my bags and onto the floor where I laid looking back at the chuckling figure standing in his clogs and holding a pot of tea.
"Damnit Kisuke!" I snapped at him as I rubbed the back of my head.
Pulling back his hood, I now had a clear view of his amused expression and a firm feeling of his spiritual pressure. It was like he had masked it with the cloche. Attempting to calm his laughter he walked into my room and placed the tea pot down onto my desk as I began to stand back up.
"Another one of your inventions I assume?" I asked, now rubbing my sore hip and dusting the dirt from my clothes.
He grabbed for me, pulling me slowly into the security of his chest, "I really didn't mean to scare you," his voice was at a whisper, "I just knew that you were back and I wanted to surprise you" placing his chin on top of my head.
My body suck into the curvature of his like we were one being while his hand danced my hair. His heart seemed to beat faster with each passing second that we held onto each other as we both came to realize that everything had led up to this wonderful moment that we shared. The smell of his skin to mine reminded me of each night that we had made love and had me aching for another yet content with the sweet embrace that opened us to the new world that we now shared.
"Huh" he huffed out as his forefinger gingerly traced the line of jaw, guiding my eyes to his, "So this is what it feels like "
"What" I asked back brushing my lips across his.
"To know that we will be together" he smiled with a glimmer in his eyes, "To know that you are mine and I'm yours!"
I softy leaned in to grant him the tender kiss that he playfully kept from me, "Yes, I'm yours and you are mine" I repeated back.
Our lips crashed together in a symphony of passion that could only be know to those that have endured such torment to get to this place of perfection. His right hand cupped my face while his left traced down my curves finally resting in the small of my back, softly pressing me to him. I could taste the sparks form our tongues as we seemed to remember every little detail that drove each other to our wits end. Our smiles bleed through the kiss as we finally drew back to gaze upon each other once more, both firmly taking in the pure reaction in other s face.
"I love you" I whispered to him as I brushed the hair back from his face.
His smile now bright as his eyes, "I love you Saya" he pecked my lips now playful in his demeanor, "And I have a surprise for you!" he said with excitement, touching my nose with his pointer finger he then turned to rummage through my desk. I stood there surprised to see that our tender reunion had now taken on a slightly different tone.
Pulling two cups from a drawer he growled, "Here they are!" quickly he rubbed them clean with his shirt, poured tea into them and handed one to me.
I stood there still in amazement of his change in personality as he slid between me and the desk to sit on the edge. Taking a sip from my cup, I could smell the orange that radiated from his beloved green tea as he held the cup to his lips.
"Now go on, aren't you going to ask me?" he said energetically with a mischievous smile then finally took a drink from his cup as he awaited my answer.
A small huff of air escaped my confused throat as I stood there and shaking my head, "Ask you what?" I questioned him.
He sat there like a child awaiting a gift, "Your surprise" he said back eyes now wide with excitement.
My mind turned at the oddity and mouth opened wide as I attempted to make sense of everything. In all the time that I had been away, I had forgotten the true man that I had fallen in love with and instantly became happy to see this fantastic whimsy in his spirit. Our lives had been plagued by such a hard winding road that I hadn't realized until then that he had pushed that side of him away so that he could become what I had wanted of him. He had always made even the most complex scenarios seem easy and trivial, nothing but a toy for his amusement that he wished to share.
I couldn't help but laugh at the strangeness of the situation as I questioned back, "Well… what is it?" quickly taking a another sip from the cup.
Standing up he grabbed the cup from my hand with his free hand, placing both down onto the desk, "I can't tell you" he kissed my forehead, "I have to show you" his hands gripped my forearms firmly, "Come to my office tomorrow afternoon and I will show you."
I shook my head, "Ok" I answered back, still slightly confused yet amused at the same time.
The love in his eyes shined bright once more as he softly pressed his lips to mine . My heart raced as I tasted the green tea and orange from his tongue as it caressed mine. Laughter in the distance broke us from our tender moment leaving biting my lip wanting only to drink more of the flavor from his mouth as he walked toward the door.
"Get some rest," he smirked as he undressed me with his eyes, "I will see you tomorrow"
Shaking my head, "Yes, tomorrow" I said back as he shut the door and disappeared, leaving me yearning for more of his touch.
Kisukes POV:
I wiped my eyes trying to stay awake long enough to finish reading through some old research of Captain Hikifunes, mostly combinations of kido spells, but one in particular that I had been toying with for a while. A barrier that would seal off all spiritual pressure was something that I had mastered in small quantities but I had ran into issues with something large enough to seal an entire living space and shield the spiritual pressure of two captain level shinigami. I had made it work on a robe but I tirelessly worked to make it work at the capacity that I needed, It would be my present to Saya once she came back. I had promised her a life together and I was committed to my word.
With each day I saw improvement as I worked tirelessly through the night, only giving into short cat naps to keep what little sanity I had left. Knowing that she was soon to return I couldn't waist any of the precious time in-between or worse fail at what I had planned. The nights were cold as one more birthday passed without my precious present but still happily celebrated with Yourichi as her birthday was only a day after. She watched over me carefully seemingly more worried that I would loose my focus and that our plans falter than for my own protection. After such a long and complicated friend ship we relied on little more that simple words and reactions to guide us through as we secretly did what we needed too to find the missing pieces of the puzzle before us on our forbidden projects for the higher powers.
Sitting on the other side of my desk, "Are you ok?" she asked as I rubbed my eyes, trying to focus on the hazy words written on the parchment before me.
"Yeah, looks like I'm just a little tired that’s all" I said back now rubbing my neck; something that I quite often did to comfort myself.
I forced a smile as she sighed, "You are no good to me dead Kisuke" a grin came to her face as she teased, "You really need to get some sleep" tossing the book that she was reading from onto my desk she leaned back in her chair, "You look like hell you know!"
I chuckled at her playful attack, "Well thank you Yourichi" I rolled my eyes at her, "Glad to know that you still care"
We both took in a hearty laugh that seemed to just continue on to little giggles. "But really, thank you my old friend" I stood up to stretch, "I can't imagine my life with out you in it." looking down onto her I grinned once more. "Even the rough times"
"Ha! Are you getting sappy on me Kisuke?" She quickly stood up a begun to softly pace the lab, "Is it finished?" she asked rubbing her hand to the wall that separated the lab from my living quarters.
Slowly I walked up beside her, "Kind of" I ruffled my hair, "I know that I nearly have it" analyzing the strength and security of the invisible barrier I had placed on the humble living space.
Her eye brows raised slightly as she turned and made her way to the door, "Well you better hurry, I hear that their time is running short" she stopped before closing the door completely, "She might be back sooner than you had anticipated! Get some rest Kisuke."
"Thanks!" I sarcastically shouted back at her as the door closed and she was now gone.
My mind scrambled with a carousel of thoughts as I attempted a few more times to build the barrier only to give in to the sleep that held my brain as a hostage. My eyes shot open as I heard my name aggressively called out over and over again.
"Kisuke, where are you... idiot?" Hiyori yelled out while thunderously maneuvering the halls and through the lab.
I found my myself leaning back onto the wall, releasing a chuckle as I realized that I had never made it to my bed. But my laugher feel silent and my breath shallow as I began to place everything together, Hiyori didn't sense my spiritual pressure. It worked, I screamed out scuffling to my feet. Hiyori's eyes gazed wildly at me as I opened the door and raced to her; a surprised look on her face as she glanced between me and the door.
Bravely I took knelt down and took hold of her biceps, "You really didn't sense me in there?" I begged her like a father needing an answer.
She shook her head no making every attempt to understand how it could be, "How did you do that?" she questioned my trickery.
The excitement of my accomplishment over came me as I wrapped my arms around my feisty lieutenant, "I will explain later. It's a gift for Saya" I said back to her.
"Don't hug me you idiot!" She yelled out as her fist found my side and I released her from my grasp.
"Sorry, wont happen again" I coughed out as I stood there hunched over in pain.
"You can't tell anyone" I begged her in a hushed tone. Trying to regain my composure my eyes look on to her revealing everything in one look, "She means everything to me, please don't take that away from us" as I verbalized my love for Saya I found myself holding back tears, "You may not like me but please… we deserve this!"
Hiyori's face softened for the first time as she looked at me not as her captain but as a man, "Aright, but lets get this straight… I don’t do it for you!" she folded her arms firmly across her chest, "I will do it for Saya." her finger now pointing furiously at me, "And you owe me some explanation later."
My chest finally began to relax as I shook my head yes, thankful for her words that brought another layer of peace to my soul. The silence npw broken as the door to my lab opened to two young shinigami's baring the seal of the 12th division upon their arms walked in and stopped before me.
Both bowed deeply, "Arigato Captain Urahara" they said in unison now stood at attention, eyes still to the ground.
"We have returned from our duties with former Captain Hikifune. What are our orders Captain?" On spouted out.
'Uhhhh" I shook my head, looking at Hiyori for assistance.
Rolling her eyes she quickly walked in front of me, "Return to your living quarters and line up in the morning with the rest." she ordered both of the young men, "You are dismissed"
They bowed again once more and left the room as I stood there wildly smiling back at Hiyori. Rolling her eyes once more she waved me on, "Go… its not like there is anything here to do!" she snapped at me.
I raced back to my room grabbing the black jacket and took off in search of Saya. My chest pounded with every touch of my feet to the ground as I closed in on her spiritual pressure; just wanting to see her smile as I greeted her. An act so simple yet so imperative to our next steps to a hidden life that we would walk together from this point forward.
