Once Ichigo had vanished, a series of awkward glances were exchanged around the table. Eri and Jiro both glared directly at Isshin who shrugged and laughed.
“You know how boys are at that age,” he said.
“That’s the problem, I do. And something’s going on with your son,” muttered Jiro. Tatsuki coughed sharply, feeling something slip down the wrong pipe. She waved a hand in front of her face to ward off the glass of water that Orihime thrust in front of it.
“Tatsuki do you want some water…?” Orihime wondered.
“N… no…” she gasped. Instantly Ryuuken slid around behind her and wrapped his arms around her torso.
“Move back and give me room,” he said sharply in a voice nobody dared disobey.
Isshin was the one who pushed the others back from clustering around as he knew exactly what was going on.
She wheezed deeply, feeling embarrassment and the odd catching of her breath in her throat. Sharp slams backwards against his torso jolted her hard and then she slumped over as something shot across the table.
“Tatsuki!” cried Orihime.
Uryuu’s eyes were wide as he saw Tatsuki’s lips almost blue in color. He grabbed Orihime to hold her back while Isshin and Ryuuken fussed over Tatsuki. Lying back against Ryuuken’s shoulder she felt her eyes watering and heaved breaths.
“Some water please,” Ryuuken murmured in that efficient tone his son knew all too well. Isshin grabbed a glass and passed it to him.
“Tatsuki chan?” murmured Eri.
“Will everyone… stop hovering,” she gasped. “I’m FINE!”
“You almost choked, young lady,” Ryuuken scolded back. “I call that FAR from fine.”
Jiro frowned and relief crossed his face as his wife gently brushed Tatsuki’s hair out of her face. She sipped the water and swallowed hard. “Perhaps you should take her up to her room to lay down a bit,” she suggested.
“I’ll help,” Ryuuken murmured as Jiro moved over. Together they helped her up between them.
Isshin rested a hand on Eri’s shoulder and nodded. “She’s in good hands. Just a simple choking that’s all.”
Orihime swallowed hard before blurting out, “Tatsuki will be fine! I mean that’s what’s great about having a doctor in the family right?”
Karin put a palm up to her face, shaking her head. Chad rested a hand on her shoulder while Isshin said, “Let’s just let them relax. Yuzu, what’s for dessert?”
“How can you worry about FOOD at a time like this goat face, sheesh?” Karin growled.
“I think dessert is a lovely idea,” said Eri nodding quickly.
“I’ll help serve it!” Orihime chirped, rising from the table. Uryuu inhaled a huge sigh of relief, not realizing how much his gut was twisted into a knot.
He swallowed hard, remembering Ryuuken’s words all too well. “You should focus on saving the living…”
Just a few seconds separated life from death, and while death from choking was rare thanks to modern medicine, he felt his heart thumping loudly in his ears. Orihime moved over and rested a hand on his shoulder. “Would you like some ice cream, Uryuu? With some honey mustard…”
“Whatever you like, Orihime san,” he murmured, giving her a weak smile. Soon plates of dessert with pie and cake were distributed around the table. Dinner plates amidst the clink of silverware clanked into large stacks that Eri and Yuzu ferried to the kitchen.
“Where is Kurosaki kun?” murmured Orihime, placing a bowl of ice cream with unusual fixings in front of her boyfriend.
Rubbing his temples Uryuu leaned into her and mumbled, “He’s gone to the other side of town with someone else.”
“Isshin, that son of yours I hope he is all right at this time of night,” muttered Eri quietly. “I know he’s trained to fight but I think you give him far too much liberty…”
“Ichigo is fine,” Chad chimed in. “He’s just going through some rough patches right now.”
“My father would say the same thing,” Uryuu said suddenly. “But he does whatever he likes.”
Waving his hands back and forth Isshin then said, “Oh come now! I know EXACTLY what he’s doing!”
All eyes turned to him. Karin rested her cheek against one hand. “Okay, then tell us mister know it all.”
“He’s probably meeting a girl,” Isshin chuckled. “I’m sure that’s all it is!”
“Ah, well then…” Eri murmured, her frown easing a bit. “As long as he’s all right. But don’t’ you at least want to meet her if he brings her home?”
“That’s right. I want to see who it is. She HAS to meet the family!” Yuzu said eagerly.
“I’ll insist,” said Isshin with a grin, swallowing a mouthful of ice cream and cherry pie.
“You know that’s not going to fly very well,” Karin sighed again, shaking her head as she finished her dessert.
“Like a lead balloon,” Chad agreed, his hand resting near Karin’s.
“Uryuu kun, are you all right?” asked Eri in concern, seeing his head in his hands.
“I think I need some fresh air,” he murmured.
“Why don’t we go for a walk, Uryuu?” Orihime said brightly, rubbing his shoulders. He bobbed his head up to look at her, his complexion pale.
“Go on then,” said Eri. “It’s a beautiful night. Why not take your sweetheart for a short walk? The neighborhood here’s safe enough.”
“Thank you,” said Uryuu quietly, reaching for Orihime’s hand. He pushed himself out from the table and followed Orihime out of the dining room. She had pulled the clips out of her hair and slipped them into the front of her dress.

Once outside in the pool of night, Ishida drew in long breaths of air. He murmured, “Thank you for finding an excuse to get out of there…”
His girlfriend interlaced their fingers together surmising, “Tatsuki’s parents are very dear sweet people, but that wasn’t the reason you wanted to leave was it?”
“Not the main reason,” muttered Uryuu, squeezing her hand. Both of them heard the echo of a hollow from across town.
He looked at her and she nodded. Ducking behind a bush he then changed into his Quincy garb while Orihime kept watch. Soon he strode out from behind it, his white mantle gleaming a shade of sodium orange. Wrapping his arm around her waist he pulled her to him. Orihime held on, feeling the rush of spirit particles gathering under both their feet.
*It is somuch like flying,* she decided, hanging onto him and laughing at the feel of freedom. Wind whipping her hair behind her as they glided along as if by magic and the city seemed to blur. Flying screen step was every bit as dizzying as any amusement park ride.
Pavement touched the bottoms of her shoes once Uryuu came to a stop and set her down. The blurs solidified into office buildings not far from Tatsuki’s housing subdivision. From around a corner Uryuu peered, nodding towards the source of the howling.
Orihime winced at the pressure slamming into them. No wonder Uryuu had a headache. She then put a hand to the front of her chest while he held out his arm. The gleaming silver pentacle around his wrist blinked into an aura of blue fire as he summoned his distinctive bow. Light flashed off his glasses and he trained his gaze forwards.
“Santen Kesshun, I reject!” called Orihime.
The three fairies split off and formed the triangular gold shield before them, blocking the majority of the fierce spirit pressure. Blue white arrows shot forwards into the night as the lumbering figure moved towards them walking on its knuckles. A huge white mask with buck teeth and gaping eye holes swiveled towards them.

Back across town Tatsuki felt Ryuuken’s hand resting on her brow, his hands cool. She heard a loud howling noise and blinked up at him.
“Orihime and Uryuu just went out,” she murmured.
“His choice and hers,” murmured Ryuuken quietly. “If he gets killed from such a low class hollow I’m disappointed in him.”
“I’ll kick his ass if he gets Orihime hurt,” she muttered.
“I believe he’s well aware of that.”
“Earlier you said let the shinigami handle it. But I don’t feel any around. I mean I did for a moment… but now…” Tatsuki muttered sitting upright.
“Your parents wish you to be here with me, not out there,” Ryuuken then reminded her, reaching for her hand.
“Remember I said before all this began that just because you hear them doesn’t mean…”
“Doesn’t mean you can’t ignore them, right,” Tatsuki sighed as she glared at him. “Yeah yeah… I know!”
“You’ll have to decide if the living life is more important than the afterlife many times,” Ryuuken mumbled.
“If you focus on the dead so much that your own life here no longer matters…”
“Are you talking about me, or your son?” asked Tatsuki grabbing his shoulder.
“They’re not locking onto my spirit pressure,” she murmured. “So what’s drawing them here anyhow? You know damn well it isn’t because of Ichigo because he’s got none.”
“He may not have any, but someone with him does,” Ryuuken said ominously.
“Say WHAT?” Tatsuki snapped, grabbing the front of his shirt. “What the hell does THAT MEAN?”
Sighing laboriously Ryuuken then made a gesture. Around him swirled countless white ribbons and Tatsuki’s eyes widened seeing them fluttering in. Her own seemed to swish and sway, curling around and blowing. Ryuuken’s own was a bright white, strong and pronounced as were others. She could see a hint of blue if she looked more closely.
“That’s Uryuu’s ribbon, and that’s Inoue-san's,” Ryuuken explained, holding them in his hand. “Notice that they are very opaque while others are translucent and others almost yellow.”
Tatsuki frowned and then saw a red strand fluttering in the wind that Ryuuken caught hold of. “Wait… that’s…”
“A shinigami’s ribbon is red,” said Ryuuken as he let it go, distaste on his face that he’d even touched it.
“Don’t tell me that Ichigo’s with one of them…” she trailed off, sitting bold upright. “He can’t see them anymore!”
“If they’re in a fake body he can,” Ryuuken said with a frown.
“That stupid IDIOT! I’m going to KILL HIM!” Tatsuki snapped. However Ryuuken reached out and grasped her shoulders before she could dash out. The ribbons all vanished as suddenly as they had appeared.
