Maki walked into Inari’s rooms at the barracks while Inari was teaching Byakuya how to play chess.
“Why aren’t you dressed yet?” Maki asked, sounding just as exasperated as she was. Inari looked down at herself. “I am dressed,” she said, standing up and turning around. “See? All the important bits covered.” Byakuya pressed his lips together to keep from smiling. Maki threw her hands up in the air, nearly tossing the kimono she had over one arm up as well. “For the love of all the gods, Hime! At least TRY to look presentable when having tea with your fiancé’s family.” “Nothing is official yet,” Inari protested as Maki proceeded to push her toward the bathroom rather forcefully. “It’s just Ginrei for the love of the gods!” “Exactly! Who is Byakuya’s grandfather and former head of the Kuchiki family, might I remind you. He’s also likely the only member of that brood aside from Rukia who wants this marriage to happen at the moment. Since you so cleverly threatened to eviscerate two members of it and read their entrails like tea leaves.” “Well, that’s quite the embellishment from what really happened,” Inari said, glancing over her shoulder at Byakuya and grinning. Byakuya fought his own grin and lost miserably. Fortunately, Maki was too focused on getting Inari properly attired to pay any attention to him at that moment. “Fine, fine,” Inari groused. “Just so you don’t poison my pillows or anything.” Maki gave her a final shove into the bathroom before slamming the door behind her charge. “Dear gods, that girl!” Somehow, though the exact how managed to escape him, Byakuya had managed to smooth his expression back into its normal cool and composed look. He studied Maki as she moved around the room, straightening various things and moving others completely. He frowned a little at watching her move because she didn’t move like a servant, not that she behaved as one anyway but this was something else, something ingrained. He blinked a little, startled, when he realized why the way Maki moved was unusual. She didn’t move like a lady’s maid or a servant, she moved like a fighter. That made him wonder. Inari dressed as quickly as she could since Maki was in quite the mood evidently. Gods only knew what she might say to Byakuya and she wasn’t sure how her future husband might take being interrogated by someone seen as a servant. Not that Maki had ever actually been a servant, not technically anyway. She came out of the bathroom dressed in the kimono that Maki had brought. “Presentable?” she asked. “It’ll have to do,” Maki said, moving toward the door. “For the love of all the long forgotten gods, at least wear shoes, Hime.” Inari sighed. “Hai, hai,” she said, finding her geta shoved under the bottom edge of the futon. She glanced up at Byakuya, who was, in her opinion, trying desperately not to laugh. She grumbled under her breath, “Just wait until she gets into one of these moods with you, Kuchiki.” Maki glanced back at the two of them. “Come on, children, I’m sure Ginrei hasn’t got all day to humor you,” she said, going out the door ahead of them. Byakuya’s eyebrows went up a little at a servant getting ahead of her master and a guest. Inari saw the look and shrugged. “I’ll explain later,” she said, moving to follow Maki. “Exactly how are we arriving at my grandfather’s?” Byakuya asked mildly. He didn’t see anything remotely resembling transportation on the Pack grounds. Maki turned to look at them and lifted an eyebrow. “I’m told you trained with Yoruichi, the brat,” Maki said. Byakuya frowned a little at her tone. “I did. Why?” “Then I presume you can keep up,” Maki said before she was instantly gone. Inari laughed at the expression on Byakuya’s face. “Maki was my mother’s personal guard. After my mother died, I kind of inherited her. Just so you know, she’s also the person I obtained the Alpha position with the Pack from,” she said before flash stepping off with him right behind her. They arrived in Ginrei’s garden just off to the side of the small tea house. Both looked a bit wind ruffled but aside from that neither was terribly worse for wear. Inari was looking around for Maki and Ginrei when she could have sworn she heard a giggle. Frowning a bit, she spotted them already seated in the tea house and Maki had her hand over her mouth because she was still giggling. She blinked, startled for a moment, before several things registered at once. The older man and woman were sitting a perfectly proper distance from one another but Maki, who was one of the most vicious fighters Inari had ever known was giggling like a school girl. Add to it that Ginrei was giving her that very pleased look of a man who had said something utterly inappropriate and had it received well by the woman it was directed at. Her jaw nearly dropped when she realized what was going on between the two older people. She shook off some of the shock and glanced up at Byakuya to see if he had managed to discern the same thing she had. By the look on his face, she thought she could safely presume he had. “I wonder,” Byakuya said. “When my grandfather became romantically involved with the former Alpha of the Pack?” “I was wondering the same thing myself,” Inari said. Looking at the older couple now it was blatantly obvious from the looks they were giving one another. She knew those looks well. They were the same ones that had passed between her and Isshin’s parents, the same with Jyuushiro and Shunsui, the same as Ichigo and Rukia, definitely the same between her and Rin. Those were looks of love. Serious, deep rooted and very real. That made her stomach clench a little and she started to worry about the position differences. She glanced up at Byakuya and noted the soft, warm smile he had while looking at his grandfather and Maki. She had never seen that look on his face before and it eased any worries she might have had tremendously. “Will your family cause problems for them?” Inari asked. Byakuya’s eyebrows went down a little. “Not if they value their place in the family, they’ll not.”
