Chapter 20
Grimmjow's trail went cold hours ago, but Tosen was not giving up the search. The sneaky bastard went underground, he was sure of that much. He suspected shinigami involvement as well. They hid their reiatsu well, even from the likes of him. Aizen's easy going attitude about the free shinigami did not seem very mindful at the moment. Tosen could sense the trouble stirring from this predicament that they now found themselves in.
Tosen stilled his movement, seeking out any traces that might be lingering around the area. There was nothing. Perhaps if Gantenbainne had not kept him so long, he would have been able to get to Grimmjow first. It made him want to kill that damn arrancar all over again for blocking him from his main target. Feeling his time slipping, he sped off again in search.
The prospect of returning to Las Noches without Grimmjow was not a ideal one. Failing in such a simple task would be a humiliation, and Aizen would not be gracious. For once he was worried about disappointing the man he had followed along this path. He'd had his reason for doing so, and he still felt strongly about it. There was never a shred of regret or sadness over the choices he made. Even when he was present during the execution of the shinigami captains, he had not reacted; yet the memories were still with him
"Sajin Komamura. Any last words before your execution?" Aizen asked, voice raised high for all to hear.
Silence followed.
"Nothing at all?"
"No words for you, traitor," his gruff voice answered. "Tosen, at least tell me why. If you say it was for revenge again, then it was just as blind as you are." His voice shook with fury.
"You just don't understand me at all, Komamura. That is your weakness, not mine."
"Damn you, Tosen! We all trusted you! Hisagi trusted you!"
"I do what I must. So shall you."
"You may be feeling victorious now, Tosen, but one day you will feel the same betrayal as us. Aizen has played you to his will. You are a fool!"
Tosen did not answer the man he once respected and called a friend. Perhaps it was disappointment that silenced Komamura from saying anything else. What he felt coming from his reiatsu was not anger, fear or sadness, but an intense pity that was directed at him. Tosen's face was a mask, free of emotion. Why should he be getting pity from a dead man?
"If that is all," Aizen said calmly.
The blade came down. In an instant, his reiatsu vanished as he was beheaded before the gathered crowd of arrancar, espada and the ex-shinigami that ruled them.
"Gin, bring out Toshiro Hitsugaya next."
"Yes, Aizen."
And the executions continued.
No, he would never forget that day. Each one had their own words to say, but it was Komamura's that stuck with him now as he ran across the wasteland that was Hueco Mundo. Maybe he was a fool, but he was in far too deep now to start doubting Aizen. All of this would be for nothing if he did that.
He only had a few concerns now, and one of them was Kurosaki. From day one he was disturbed by Aizen's fixation with the boy. What was meant to be just entertainment, was now a deep rooted thorn in Aizen's heart. If that thorn was removed, Aizen could bleed out and diminish. Yet, if the thorn remained, it would surely kill him in time. The boy was becoming dangerous. Maybe he could use Grimmjow to make Aizen see the folly he was creating more clearly. If he could only capture the bastard.
Miles stretched behind and ahead of him as he kept moving. He was certain that Grimmjow was in the company of the free shinigami, which in turn might make his job more difficult. Especially if they had managed to kill the espada. Even without zanpakuto, shinigami could be fierce opponents, but now they were even stronger since Urahara and Kurosaki's father were mixed into the equation. It had been long since he had been in a real battle. Perhaps today he would get one.
Tosen had been away from Las Noches too long now as it was, and further delay was not in his plans. The longer it took him to get back, the more turbulent the situation would become. He didn't want Aizen to send out more arrancar, or even Gin to come hunting for him. This was his job, and he was determined to do it on his own. There was his other problem, the one that he always ignored, but could no longer do so. The arrancar and espada. He didn't trust any of them, and his distrust strengthened with Grimmjow and the other's betrayal. Surely Aizen had to be aware of the discord among his troop. It was only fear that kept them in check, but how much longer would that be enough to stay them from attack?
He stopped, face raised to the wind. He could count the grains of sand that hit his cheeks, and sense the trees and rocks nearby. His right foot shifted a quarter of an inch. There was someone across from him, exactly five feet away from his position. He spoke his name with some respect. After all, he had survived in this cruel desert undetected for a long time.
"Isshin Kurosaki."
"The one and only. Your senses are extraordinary. Too bad your honor isn't."
"Don't speak to me about honor, shinigami. Your kind has none of it."
"I have to disagree." He did not move. "I lost my power as a shinigami. I did not become bitter. I moved forward and went to the mortal world where I met a beautiful human woman."
"Your story is pointless."
"I married her, had an exceptional son, and two beautiful girls," Isshin continued. "All of them were like angels to me. We were all happy, then some hollow came along, sensing my son's power, and my wife died to protect him." Still, he did not move.
"Is this supposed to move me somehow?"
"It probably won't, but that's not the point to my story."
"Then what is?"
"I'm getting to that." Isshin kept his still stance. "When that happened, I was determined to get my power back. I won't go into details, because that would just take too far of a detour." He watched Tosen. "Years later, my son was awoken to his own power. I can't tell you how proud I was when I found out. By then I had my power back, but I kept it all from him. That was a mistake on my part. I should have been truthful from the beginning with my wife, then maybe none of our misfortune would have happened."
"Fate is fate," Tosen said, keeping his senses high.
"Yeah, I really think so too." The wind blew around them. "To get to my point, I killed Grand Fisher, the bastard hollow that took my Masaki away from me and my children. Revenge is a nasty thing, Tosen. For some of us, it's like a canker that keeps growing until you take action and cut it out. I took care of mine in part. And you, well, you took too damn much out."
"Hmph, you know nothing of my reasons."
"I know what loss is, ten fold. There is only one more piece of that canker I have left in me, and I'm going to cut it out before this is all over. I will kill Aizen."
"That is a bold statement coming from a man that couldn't save his wife or son."
"You're right. I didn't save my wife, but I can still save my son."
Tosen smirked. "Who says he wants saving? And do you think he will appreciate if you kill the man he calls lover now?"
"...."
"Ah, so there is something that shuts you up."
"You go too far with that lie."
"It is no lie, father of Ichigo Kurosaki. Your son is lovers with the man that destroyed Seireitei and the mortal world." Tosen pointed at him. "You have Grimmjow in your midst. Hand him over to me now and I will leave you all to your rat hole in the ground."
"Is that what we all are? Rats?" The familiar voice came from his left. It disturbed him that he was not aware of the presence until he spoke.
"Urahara."
"Yes, Tosen, it's me."
"I'm not surprised you would come out." He turned his head toward the voice. "Going to ask me why I made my choices as well?"
"No, that's not really anything I care to hear about. It's my own mind that I pay attention to. Though, I do wonder why you want Grimmjow back so much."
"Instead of wasting precious time wondering, just bring him to me. Otherwise I will just kill you both and find him myself."
"I think Grimmjow was a bad boy and did something to piss off Lord Aizen. "What do you think, Isshin?"
"Sounds about right. If he's manipulated my son like Tosen says he has, then I guess Grimmjow being so close to him would set a fire under Aizen's ass to make him pay."
"Enough," Tosen said, and in a split second his sword was embedded through Isshin's gut. He twisted the blade, but instead of the expected feel of flesh ripping, he felt a blast of air hit his body. The sound was like a balloon expelling air when it gets a hole in it. From his left came a disappointed groan from Urahara.
"It's always hard to lose a gigai that I worked so hard on."
"You bastard," Tosen growled, letting his calm slip for the first time as he kicked the deflated gigai away.
"I prefer genius," Urahara scoffed. "Aizen fell for one of my creations once too. Don't feel so bad about it."
"You.." Tosen lifted his zanpakuto.
"Don't bother. I'm not really here either. We set this little decoy for you because we knew you were coming."
"Where is Grimmjow?!"
"With us, alive and well. Though Isshin keeps giving him dirty looks, but I can't blame him."
"Where?!"
"Hm, could be north, south, east or west. We could all be together, or we could have split up and went each way. Take your pick, Tosen."
"I'll find you."
"I doubt it. I think it would be best if you went back home to your leader. I'm sure he'll be forgiving that you lost what he was after."
"Interfering fool," Tosen yelled and sliced the gigai with one swipe to another burst of hot air.
"Not another one," Urahara said, voice fading as the gigai lost it's shape and pooled to the sand at Tosen's feet.
~*~
"That shook him up a bit." Urahara looked at Isshin as he pulled back the small amount of reiatsu he had lent to the gigai back to the cave they were in.
"Yeah," Isshin muttered.
"You're worried about what he said?"
"Of course I am!"
"Understandable." Urahara watched his friend.
"Urahara, what if my son isn't himself anymore? How am I supposed to live with myself for not getting to him sooner?"
"You'll cross that bridge when you get to it." He started to walk and Isshin fell in beside him.
"So, don't think about it until the time comes? Great advice."
"It's the best I can give right now, but if you keep worrying, your blade will dull for the battles ahead."
"I know, you're right." He sighed as they continued their trek back to the others. "Looks like I have to have another discussion with that espada."
"Grimmjow."
"I don't have to use his name," Isshin grunted and jumped down to the lower level, Urahara dropping down behind him.
"You still don't trust him?" Urahara asked as they turned and went down another branch of the underground maze.
"He helped destroy our worlds, Urahara. Complete trust is going to take time, maybe an eternity of it."
"You don't have faith in Nel's instincts?"
Isshin stopped. "She has a good heart." He looked at Urahara with a sharp gaze. "But, she was one of them. Her trust may just be based on that connection for all we know."
"So, you don't trust your daughter either."
"Now you're making me sound like a asshole when you say it that way," Isshin said. She wasn't his daughter by blood, but he felt like she was his, and he treated her with the same love and care as his other children. "I do trust her. I just don't want her to be manipulated too."
"I don't think that will happen. She has you close by." Urahara stopped to set up a alarm trap behind them. It only took him moments before they were on their way again.
"On to other matters," Isshin said.
"Agreed."
"Have you figured out how we can get the zanpakuto back?"
"That would be a resounding no."
"Just perfect," Isshin muttered.
"I'm sure I could break the seal easily if I was there, but I'm not, so our options are limited."
"Fuck.
"I could think of a few colorful words myself, but I'm too much of a gentleman."
Isshin snorted. "Yeah, you're just squeaky clean."
"That's me." Urahara smirked. "What we need is someone on the inside that could pull off breaking the seal. I spoke with everyone, and they all say that if their zanpakuto were free, they could easily call their blades to them."
Isshin nodded. "Number one problem; we have no one on the inside."
"That is the pickle. Ichigo, Orihime and Uryu aren't in any kind of position to attempt it, and we can't get to them without being prepared, and to be prepared, the shinigami need their zanpakuto. A vicious circle."
Isshin thought for a moment. "Are there any gigai left?"
"Just one." Urahara looked at him and smirked. "A plan itching at your brain there?"
"Maybe. Can two sets of reiatsu inhabit the gigai?"
"Hm, it's never been done, but I could make it work."
"Are you sure?"
"Who do you think you're talking to? Of course I'm sure," Urahara said and winked.
Isshin chuckled. "We used those gigai to throw Tosen off our trail."
"Yep."
"And you suggested to him that he go back to Las Noches."
"Yep."
"Do you think he'll go back?"
"Nope."
"Yeah, that's what I thought too. He looked too intent on getting the job done."
"Yes, his loyalty to Aizen is solid." Urahara said and then sighed. "Pity we wasted the last two gigai to throw Tosen off when we are planning to capture him now."
"Hm."
"That is what you're getting at, right?"
Isshin nodded. "It will be easy enough. We'll just give him what he's after."
"Think Grimmjow will be up for that?"
"That's not my concern. He owes us. Either quietly, or with my foot in his ass, he'll do the job."
"Spoken like a true angry father."
"Don't start with me, Urahara."
"Yes, Daddy." The blond laughed as they sped through the cavern and back to the ones that waited for them.
AN: Hey all, thanks again for all the reviews and votes. PotionsPet mentioned in her review that she checked my LJ fiction page (squallfan1_fics), and my story wasn't there. Sad, but true. I post it on LJ on the Bleach Yaoi page there. I guess I should stop being lazy and actually post it to my own fiction page too. I will start doing that. Anyway, until next time!
