"I'm home," Ichigo calls out as he pushes the front door open and steps over the threshold of his family's home. His mouth twists with a frown as he catches the familiar and tell-tale sound of his dad launching at him with a kick, and he ducks out of the way.
"You're late!" Kurosaki Isshin cries out, his foot impacting with the door, and Ichigo winces slightly as the wooden structure splinters with a resounding crunch. "Do you know what time it is, delinquent?! Dinner in this house is at seven o'clock sharp, every night!"
"You jerk! Is that how you greet your blind son who just helped a ghost find peace?!" Ichigo all but growls out, and he swipes at his dad's head with his guide cane. It connects with a sharp thwack, and his dad gives a small grunt of pain. "You're lucky that mom is at work tonight, so she can't see that you broke the door!"
"So what! I'll have the door fixed up in a jiffy! You're still late, and the rules in our house are iron clad!" Isshin declares, and Ichigo scowls in his general direction as he retracts his guide cane. "Besides, I think you just want to rub it in my face that you can help ghosts while I can't even…"
"See them?" Ichigo finishes for his dad, his voice coming out eerily calm. "Well, at least you can still see. I didn't ask to be born with this gift, and I'd gladly give it up if it meant I could see again, but it doesn't work like that."
"Ichigo," Isshin says in a weak voice. "I-"
"Just forget about it, goat-face," Ichigo interrupts before his dad can get the apology out, and he moves around Isshin to make his way over to the table where his younger sisters, Karin and Yuzu, are waiting for them. "The food is getting cold."
"Oh, Ichi-nii, I think you have a new friend haunting you," Yuzu says in a kindly voice, and he stops short of the table with a groan.
"Really? I just got done exorcising one, and another latches on to me?!" He twists around with a scowl and waves his guide cane through the air as if it can get rid of the ghost.
"You know, Strawberry, you could just pretend they don't exist. It'd make your life easier," Karin intones rather dryly, and he hears the clinking of her chopsticks against her bowl.
"Or you could do something about them since you can actually see them, Karin," Ichigo grouses as he swipes his guide cane through to air again.
"Nah, I'm in permanent denial, Strawberry, so it's all up to you," Karin responds a bit smugly.
"I'd help out if I could, Ichi-nii, but they're just blurry shapes to me," Yuzu says, her tone apologetic.
"It's fine, Yuzu; I'll just be up in my room, dealing with this ghost," Ichigo wearily responds as he lowers his guide cane, and then he makes his way over to the stairs.
"Ichi-nii…I'll bring some supper up for you later," Yuzu calls after him, and her chair scrapes against the floor as she gets up to prepare his meal for later on. "You could be more supportive of Ichi-nii, Karin," he hears her say as he climbs the stairs. "He has it rough whenever mom has to work late."
"Strawberry doesn't want us to help him out of pity, Yuzu, and you know that," Karin responds, her voice a little sharp. "And you know that he hates it when people feel sorry for him because of his blindness, stupid goat-face."
Ichigo tries to tune out the rest of the conversation; a feat made easier by the sound of gentle fluttering of something winged reaching his ears when he steps into his bedroom. He pulls the door shut behind him, briefly wondering if someone else had opened the window in his room before determining that it's still closed. Strange…
He tenses up as the weight of something heavy, heavier than whatever is making the fluttering sound, lands on the floorboards just in front of him with a dull thump, and, though he knows it's foolish, he swings his guide cane at what he figures to be an intruder. It connects with the intruder with a very loud crack, prompting Ichigo to scowl at the thought that he might have broken it, and the intruder lets out a pained yelp as they're sent tumbling. "Pretty cocky for a burglar, ain'tcha?! You're not gonna find anything very valuable up here!"
"You…" A woman's voice, at least Ichigo thinks that the intruder is a woman, speaks up from the floor by his dresser. "You can see me?! And you hit me!"
"Stop your yammering, thief," Ichigo growls out as he runs his hand along his guide cane to feel out any damage to it. It seems fine, but he'll have to get his mom or dad to look at it later. As for being able to see, well, if the intruder can't tell that he's blind, then he's not going to stupidly inform them of his disability. "And, yeah, I can see you."
"Ichigo, are you okay in there?" Isshin asks from the other side of his door, his tone somber.
"Just subduing some chick who broke into my bedroom," Ichigo replies rather snarkily. "'Cause our home security apparently sucks."
"What!?" The door starts to open, and Ichigo steps out of the way so that it doesn't hit him, and by virtue of him moving out of the way, it also allows his dad to come in. "There's no one else in here, Ichigo."
"It's no use," the woman says, her clothes rustling as she stands up. "Normal people can't see me because I'm a Shinigami."
"…a Shinigami?" Ichigo echoes questioningly, and he doesn't miss the way his dad's breath hitches. He doesn't know if it's from shock or surprise, but it's something to grill his dad on later, once he's dealt with this supposed Shinigami. And the ghost that's latched onto him. "I think I've got this handled, goat-face. It's just some sort of delusional ghost."
