A/N: I’ve edited Chapter 1 after realizing that Mayuri made a big speech about the undesirability of perfection to Szayel in Hueco Mundo. The time frame for this speech is after my story but I think he’s had this opinion for most of his life.
In the 3rd paragraph, I changed imperfection to blemish. I changed similar wording in the paragraph beginning, “Some might have thought it inappropriate …” I’m also trying to exclude unofficial (non-manga) story-lines like the Bounts, so if you find anything that contradicts this effort, please let me know. I already found one in this chapter and have changed it before posting. Chapter Warnings: Angst, Abuse (verbal)2. Selection: The Unsuspecting Volunteers
Nemu sat in the 12th Division’s Cafeteria, nibbling on her fish supper (no onions), thinking about her most recent chore with Kurotsuchi Taichou. He seemed absorbed in some analysis and he failed to notice my other hand between my legs. Even though, she still thought he suspected her disobedience to his former command when he lifted his hand as if to strike her. She feared he would’ve really beat her senseless if she hadn’t fled as quickly as she did. Is it so wrong for me to have the same type of fulfillment as he? She was inclined to feel that she had been missing out on something for a long time and wished she had someone she could discuss it with. As she glanced around the sterile, plain eating space, she saw Akon, Mayuri’s Lead Researcher at the RDI, approach her table with his own food tray. As luck would have it for Akon, he spotted Nemu sitting alone and decided to fan the flames of his long held obsession with the daughter of his taichou. “May I sit with you, Kurotsuchi Fukutaichou?” he politely inquired. “Of course, 3rd seat Akon,” and added in a whisper, “if you don’t mind having a serious personal conversation with me.” Nemu determined that Akon would do nicely as a sounding board to vent her frustration and confusion upon. He was as trustworthy as she was in this division and she’d always felt a kinship with him. They were both directly under the authority of their taichou and therefore, understood what it felt like to receive the brunt of his wrath. “Uhh, okay, fukutaichou, I guess that would be all right.” Akon wasn’t sure what to make of her quiet announcement but really couldn’t pass on an occasion to spend time with her. “You may dispense with the formality, Akon. Please call me Nemu. I am about to expose you to a very private ordeal and I would like you to be familiar enough with me to demonstrate your honest opinions.” She wouldn’t smile, even though she was physically capable, but she tried to convey her need and trust with her eyes alone. Akon was captivated by her melancholic green eyes, “Yes, Nemu, whatever you ask, I will endeavour to be truthful.” “I...” she felt her throat constrict. Why is this hard to say? Akon reached his hand out to cover hers. “Don’t fear, Nemu, I wouldn’t do anything to harm you. You can trust me.” His heartfelt words and compassionate expression released a dam inside of Nemu. “I have performed manual and oral stimulation of our taichou’s penis whenever he’s asked me to, without complaint, but I often feel that I need –– something during or afterward and I’m left very uncomfortable and discouraged. I require some understanding of what is happening to me.” Her face beseeched Akon for assistance. He just stared at her for a moment, frozen, unable to believe what she was telling him. His taichou? Forced his daughter? To do such a thing? “Akon? Are you all right?” Nemu was not aware of the enormity of her confession. It upset her to see that Akon was shocked but she didn’t connect that it was due to her; she wondered if he had something else on his mind. “Oh, Nemu. I’m so sorry for you. I … I don’t know what to say.” He hadn’t even considered that she was only asking about how to deal with her physical responses. He was stuck on the cruelty of her situation. “I see. Can I infer that your sympathy for me is an indication that I have truly failed to achieve an expected outcome?” “No! …” He lowered his voice after his sudden outburst. “I mean, no Nemu, it’s not your fault.” His tone fell even lower as he didn’t want anyone to hear the criticism he was about to make and report back to Kurotsuchi. “I don’t think you’ve failed at all. It’s … erm … Taichou. He’s failed in his role as a father to you.” “Akon. You shouldn’t say things like that. Not in here.” She glanced around the mostly empty cafeteria to see if there was any suspicious behaviour from the other diners. The irony was that she believed his words were treacherous while hers were perfectly acceptable, albeit private. Although what he was implying was blasphemous, it struck a chord with her, and she wanted to explore it further. “I think it would be better if we continued this conversation, later, in a more private setting. Can you meet me in my quarters at 10 p.m.?” Akon merely nodded his head. He was glad not to continue at the moment. He was having trouble maintaining his composure as his mind was reeling from disbelief. He would get himself under control so that he could be of some help to her, later. And maybe, he might even allow himself to show her how he really felt about her. It was fortunate that they ended their exchange at that point because Kurotsuchi Mayuri Taichou strode into the cafeteria, gathered his evening meal of fish (no onions), and observing them both, made a beeline for their table. “Ah, Akon, just the person I need to see. We can talk while we eat.” Mayuri glanced at the barely touched food on Akon’s tray. “Hmmn. Looks like you just arrived here, also.” He then turned to sneer at Nemu, “You may stay for now, but keep your inadequate thoughts to yourself.” As he sat down, he missed the flash of burgeoning hatred in Akon’s eyes, and the downcast look in Nemu’s. “I’ve been working out the details of a complementary experiment to the Hollow Miniaturization, Akon. I’ll message you with more specific instructions, later.” He didn’t feel it necessary to enlighten his fukutaichou to all the facts, right now. He flicked a pea-pod at Nemu. “Take notes, you useless dullard.” Akon could barely keep his fists from clenching at the insulting behaviour. “I’ll need you, Akon, to prepare the Brain Augmentation Apparatus for selective erasure as well as authority configuration.” The BAA was a device that turned people into sheep, figuratively, following whatever orders their Shepard, Mayuri, gave them. “We’ll need the Biomedical AV Processor for implantation.” This AudioVisual CPU chip was designed to be compatible with organic material. It contained a recorder and a Flash drive for storage. “We’ll be connecting a Transceiver to it, so make sure not to forget one of those too, idiot-child.” He tapped the computer tablet Nemu was entering notes on with his absurdly long blue fingernail. “If that is all, Taichou, I’ll take my leave and get started on those preparations.” Akon would do as asked, but he’d had enough of the rude barbs sent Nemu’s way. He was already dealing with her bombshell and found it very difficult to keep his voice from betraying his ire. He also worried that the devices might be used on Nemu, given that she was the scientist’s favourite tinker toy. He picked up his half-eaten supper tray and disappeared before Kurotsuchi had a chance to give permission. “Ooooh. I love to see eager, young minds, anxious to work hard for me.” Mayuri admired Akon’s dedication, pleased the younger man met his high expectations. It didn’t hurt that he was nice to look at, with those eye-catching horns on his forehead. “Now, Nemu, keep your trap shut while I enjoy the rest of my meal. I need some thinking space.” They ate in silence, Nemu resuming to pick at her fish. She toyed with the idea of opening up to her taichou about her sexual ignorance, her body jerking slightly as if to begin the topic. She stopped herself as she realized that it was wishful thinking, he would just yell at her for speaking, and wouldn’t be the father that she so desperately needed. Mayuri was engrossed in musing about his pending experiment and didn’t notice Nemu’s odd twitching. Now, who will my gifted data collector be? He needed to start with this person as he was the linchpin of the operation. Someone with a malleable brain would be preferable, if I have to reconfigure them to be controlled remotely. Mmm, who is able to assess a Shinigami’s condition on all the required levels, though? Unohana Taichou obviously, but she would be suspicious of the subject’s condition, not easily influenced and besides, abducting her successfully would be an entire mission itself. However, another healer might be the ideal mole; an essential member to any perilous journey, but expendable enough to be allowed leave from the 4th’s ranks. Drat! I don’t know those miserable brats well enough to choose an observer, let alone a subject that the observer knows. –– Maybe Nemu could perform a worthy role, after all. Mayuri looked up at his subordinate and smiled creepily. He cleared his throat to get her attention. “Tell me, Nemu, of the social interactions of our Soul Society members.” He dragged his pencil-long fingernail in figure-eights across the table top. “You are, in fact, uniquely qualified to comment on the relationships within the squads because you are a member of the Women’s Shinigami Association and must hear all kinds of juicy rumours and truths.” She blinked into awareness that he was addressing her, even asking for her knowledge and opinions. “Yes, Taichou, I have listened to unconfirmed reports from Yachiru and Rangiku, regarding the relationships amongst the Shinigami. I would be honoured to help you in any way I can,” she admitted. She felt something “special” blossom within herself when he showed such a keen interest in her expertise and abilities, which wasn’t often. When briefly apprised of his intentions and given the description of the kind of observer he needed, Nemu was easily able to suggest Yamada Hanatarō, 7th seat of the 4th Division. “He is small and timid but well thought of by many high ranked Shinigami, including a few taichou’s, and possesses superior healing Kido. He should probably have a higher rank but his clumsiness and gullibility are holding him back,” she regretfully described. It never occurred to her that he wouldn’t consent to the honour of serving her taichou, or that he wouldn’t even know he was being used. She didn’t have the advanced socialization to understand basic rights and freedoms, as was evident in her own pitiful position. “Does this healer have a personal relationship with a fukutaichou?” “I believe he is close with Abarai Renji due to helping Ichigo in the Rukia incident. Did you know that Renji is only interested in Rukia as a friend and that he and Byakuya are a romantic item, now?” She added as an aside, thrilled at being able to share such matters with him. Mayuri shook his head. I really couldn’t care less about who is itemized. “Rangiku doesn’t spend much time with Yamada that I’ve seen but she hugs him a lot when she’s around him. I guess that means he’s a friend. She is pretty demonstrative toward everyone, though, hugging and squeezing their faces into her breasts, especially the men of small stature, like her taichou, Hitsugaya Toshiro. I’ve even been the recipient of a few of those embraces. They’re actually quite nice, so that might explain why the men don’t really protest.” Her cheeks blushed very lightly at the memory of those soft and warm, sweet smelling bosoms. Mayuri was perplexed. What’s she going on about? Who cares about someone’s abnormally large mammary glands? “Ran doesn’t talk about Hanatarō much, either, so he must not do very interesting things. She does talk a lot about Zaraki Taichou, lately, come to think of it. I wonder if something is going on there? I hope she’s careful because he can be quite dangerous.” She found herself rambling a bit, wanting to keep the connection with her father. I think this is the first time I’ve seriously acknowledged that he is my father, even though I’ve stated it factually to others, before. Mayuri nodded his head in agreement with the Zaraki observation. Rangiku isn’t the only one who “does talk a lot.” “Yachiru spoke of a fondness for the small healer, so they might be intimate, but that’s unconfirmed. I can’t imagine Yachiru doing that act for anyone, though, she’s so domineering. He’s more submissive, so I’m sure he would be fulfilling her needs.” The only intimate act she could imagine was oral stimulation and she flushed even brighter at the thought of a man servicing herself. “Nemu, try to stay on topic, will you? I don’t have time for the romantic gushings of a hormonal female.” Mayuri was losing the battle with what little patience he had, listening to this drivel. “Yes, sir.” She reined her fantasies back in. “I just realized that Renji and Rangiku have an assignment in the Human World right now, due to the appearances of the Arrancar there. Does that make any difference to you?” “Yes, of course it does. I need someone here in the Seireitei.” Besides, there were too many variables with the first three. Abarai Renji is too hazardous a choice, being so close to the keen eyes of his lover, Kuchiki Taichou. Matsumoto Rangiku is too distant a contact and besides, Hitsugaya Taichou also has very sharp eyes. Kusajishi Yachiru is under that lunatic, Zaraki Taichou, a real loose canon, who is too unpredictable and extremely dangerous. She’s a no go. Nemu carried on enthusiastically, “I think Hanatarō might be a close friend with Hisagi Fukutaichou, acting Taichou of the 9th squad. I heard that Shūhei tattooed Hanatarō’s back with a notification of protection against some bullies from his own squad.” That seems highly personal. Mayuri filtered through the information Nemu provided with his hands pressed together in a prayer pose, fingertips resting on his chin. “You will be the link between Hanatarō and myself if I choose him, as it will be more natural for you to be seen talking with him. You may leave now, I have some decisions to make.” “Thank you, Taichou, I will not let you down.” She immediately assumed the duty, thinking about how to form a bond with the young healer as she wandered out of the cafeteria. Perhaps I will ask Akon for advice when we meet up later.Mayuri finished his meal slowly, in much desired solitude, letting his mind concentrate on the taste and texture of his food. He preferred to dine alone, allowing his alimentary canal a stress free environment in which to digest. He didn’t usually schedule working suppers, as it was contrary to his policy of taking care of his personal needs before all other desires. He was positive that members of all the 13 divisions thought he was a compulsive Workaholic, but that was far from the truth. He simply enjoyed his research, and therefore, spent both “work time” and “play time” pursuing his passion. This may have been the evidence for the epithet “Workaholic”, but work was always second to his own health and welfare. Besides, if he was one to work compulsively, he would have been more keen on running his own division, but he left that for the weaker sex, like Nemu and all the fukutaichou females. He actually felt sorry for the fukutaichou males, seeing them as emasculated in what was essentially a glorified secretarial role. After he left the cafeteria, he took a long walk through the Seireitei to get some fresh air and clear his mind; focusing on the warmth of the sun, the wind on his face and natural sounds in the parks. No doubt, more misconceptions were made about the face paint he wore. It didn’t inhibit him from feeling the sun and wind, but enhanced it. He’d designed it to be highly sensitive to all sorts of stimuli so he could “read” his surroundings better. It also functioned as a protective shield against foreign microbes, toxic particles and undesirable photons. He was able to meditate and walk simultaneously, although people who saw him might have thought he was sleepwalking whilst muttering under his breath. He refused to acknowledge anyone during this period and most who’d seen him out and about, avoided contact anyway. When he arrived back at his research lab, his mind and body were refreshed and he was able to make decisions easily and rapidly. Yamada does seem to be the obvious choice for the role of observer. He fits the talent criteria and his gullibility will make controlling him a piece of cake. He isn’t too highly ranked to be missed if he went on a mission. The blue haired scientist pulled a chair up to his computer array. He did a check on Yamada Hanatarō and discovered that Nemu’s assessment was fairly accurate. The fact that he was so well connected, including the Kurosaki kid, would be helpful in making a case to include him. Yamada also knew a few fukutaichous but the others had already been ruled out, so there was only one choice left for a subject. That just leaves Hisagi Shūhei. Truly, a favourable choice, given he has no taichou to interfere. He’d have to do some snooping to find out if there were friends or lovers to be concerned about, and confirm how close Hanatarō was to the acting Taichou of the 9th. He gathered the information he needed quickly as his computer had access to anything of relevance, even details he wasn’t supposed to have permission to view. He was pleased to discover the following facts. Hisagi worked diligently, running the 9th Division as acting Taichou and Fukutaichou, and he was also the Editor in Chief for the weekly ‘Seireitei Communication’ magazine. He is so busy that he has no time for an active social life, heading straight home to his empty quarters after many late nights at the division offices. A malicious grin spread across his face. He barely keeps up his friendships, going out drinking with his pals only once or twice a month and has no current lover. He chuckled on an intake of air, making a sick, rasping sound. How sad for him, how fortunate for me. Contrary to this, he noted, the man had actually spared a few moments for his compatriot, Hanatarō, to imprint a tattoo on his back, a declaration of friendship and strength from his supporters. That clinches it! Hisagi has got to be the host. After Kurotsuchi had perused the Shinigami database, he spent a few moments looking through the most recent information on the Arrancar. He briefly gave a thought to which Espada he might choose, if he could lure a specific one. Unfortunately, there was very limited data on Ulquiorra and Yammy, since there weren’t any Soul Society Shinigami present during that altercation, only the remote sensors which alerted the RDI to their presence. Urahara and his feline sidekick, Shihōin Yoruichi obviously won’t share what they discovered with Soul Society and Kurosaki is useless in relating pertinent details. Wait a minute! What’s this file? An encrypted communiqué from Urahara to Kyōraku? Of course, there can be no reasonable excuse to ban my admittance if it has relevant data on the Espada. He set about decoding the cipher but it took Mayuri longer than expected, and he cursed Kisuke under his breath all the while. Damn that Urahara! Sharing information only with his former friends, but not his former coworkers. How long has this been going on? He was finally able to uncover helpful details on the first two Espada that appeared in Karakura town. It seemed Ulquiorra was stronger than Yammy, making him a better choice for injection if he could arrange it. However, Yammy was still amazingly strong, and his raging ego might prove entertaining. There was also more information on Grimmjow, Espada No. 6, which Ichigo must have provided to Urahara after their fight. Grimmjow looks promising. Highly aggressive, extremely powerful, and somewhat defiant. If they’re all like these three, I don’t care which one I get. This is all too perfect. The only thing left to decide is which taichou can do the job of pinning down an Arrancar. He didn’t have many to choose from as his relationships with quite a few were strained, and with others, non-existent. He recalled that Kyōraku Taichou had shown that he was unbiased and unafraid of anyone’s opinions by coming to his aid at the meeting. He is perceptive, exceptionally strong and capable of leading, despite his apparent laziness and persistent intoxication. He’d be able to take down most Arrancar easily and therefore, should be able to hold an Espada for the short length of time needed for my device to incapacitate it. He has also been the recipient of covert intelligence, and if that continues, he may be my link to the Urahara information pipeline. Yes, I believe he is the best choice of the few that I can tolerate. Feeling that the majority of his planning was complete, Mayuri checked the time, saw it was 10 p.m., and realized he needed to get some beauty sleep. He was going to have a busy schedule ahead of him, with the most important meeting occurring the next day.
