Two decades have passed by. Two decades of horror and constant fear. The population of the world has become unknown; international communication no longer exists. In Japan, small pockets of humanity exist, little more than tribals fighting to survive in a land haunted by monsters. Those with no spiritual powers, or those too weak to fight live life as their ancestors did; farming, crafting pots, the most mundane of tasks. The Quincy, those with the power to fight, stand guard against the Hollows who stalk the world.
In the days after the invasion, two men appeared amongst the battles between Hollow and Soul Reaper. With bows of spiritual energy they slew many times their own number with easel to the people they were heroes, idolized by a population seeking any hope. When the Soul Reapers withdrew to their fortress of Karakura Town, the two men became ants in a tornado of violence, a blood orgy of death and horror.
Finding others with spiritual power, the two men began to teach the ways of the Quincy; a militia of humanity rose to defend itself. The training was not complete, however, for soon after the two men died in battle against a giant beast, vanishing in a flash of red light. With no teachers and no written materials, the Quincy that followed in the next two decades radically changed. The bow, once the norm, became a minority for weapon types; maces, lances, daggers, axes, swords… nearly any weapon type one could conceive made up the Quincy armory.
Smaller settlements may have only one or two defenders, but some of the larger may have a dozen or more. Most are drawn from the very settlements they protect, but many has been a Quincy who struck out on their own, only to find a purpose in protecting a small community which lacks any form of protection.
But not all with the power to combat Hollows stood to defend their fellow humans. Petty in fighting, greed, crime; the dark impulses that still lived in the heart of man birthed exiles. Those cast out from their tiny tribes, with little other prospects, turned to raiding for survival, and sometimes, to sate their more base desires. Entire settlements burn, born of mans inhumanity to man.
Trading between the many small tribes of man is minimal at best; the threat of raiding Quincy and Hollows alike dissuade many a would be trader or merchant, seeking to hock whatever wares they may have made or found. Communications are much the same; but in times of great need, or when news of great importance breaks, a brave, or foolish, person would strike out to inform those near their small tribe, hoping to spark a domino effect that would finally bring it to the farthest reaches of known human habitation.
The ruined cities of Japan are the butchering grounds of the Hollows; many was a foolish travelers or cocky Quincy who ventured into the ruins, hoping to find a safe place to sleep or supplies and were never to be seen again. In rare circumstances, those who ventured in have returned carrying with them a treasure trove of objects from a time when humanity was the masters of the world. But even of those lucky few, most end up going back… to never be seen again.
On cloudless nights when the moon sits full, the ruins echo with the cries of the beasts, a surge of spiritual energy pouring from around the wrecked facades of civilization. Some speculate that they seek to return to their world, others say much the same, only to bring reinforcements so that they might one day crush the walls of the fortress city. But any who go seeking answers end the same as all the rest; torn apart by packs of rabid Hollows.
The great fortress city stands silently in the middle of the madness, a monolith and testament to order in a sea of carnage. For nearly the whole of these two decades, a Soul Reaper has not once been seen; spirit particles repel all attempts to even reach the walls, and airspace above the city charged a torrent of energy that obscures all attempts at spying. Those who were capable, or stupid enough to withstand the repelling force soon found themselves dead, slain by an attack, seemingly invisible to even the most spiritually aware of people.
As time marches forward, many assume the world would remain the same as it always has. But time, it has a way of changing things… and things, they are going to change.
