- * - Chapter Two - * -
“Fools rush in where angels fear to tread.”
The air was crisp and cool, the rain had seen to it. A gentle breeze was blowing causing it to feel more like autumn rather than mid summer. The fresh sent of rain and wet dirt filled the cool night air. The moon illuminated the night sky, full with its soft white glow. Water runoff from the nights earlier thunderstorm, could still be heard off in the distance. As well as the soft shuffle of zori sandals and voices, that can’t be heard by most humans - nor can the speakers themselves be seen.
“So a kindergarten teacher decides that today, she is going to expand her classes vocabulary. She asks her students to…”, Ichigo Kurosaki, the younger of the two shinigami, began as he, and his comrade, continue to walk the streets of Karakura. “Ok, wait a minute, what’s a ‘kindergarten’ teacher?”, Renji Abarai, the older, of the two inquired. Ichigo looked into Renji’s emerald- green eyes, “You’re kidding right?” Renji looked down at Ichigo in bewilderment, a gentle breeze blew by causing a couple of loose strands of crimson-colored hair, held up in a high pony tail, to blow freely. Renji shook his head, “I know what a teacher is but, what is this ‘kindergarten’ thingy, you speak of?” Ichigo paused for a moment, and tried hard not to laugh, as he continued to stare at Renji. He smiled, and found it hard to believe that Renji, who was over 2,000 years old, didn’t know what a ‘kindergarten’ teacher was.
“Ok, never mind. Ummm…Oh, I know. A lawyer died and..You do know what a lawyer is right?” Renji nodded, “Yeah, I think so. Isn’t a lawyer someone who, if you pay em enough money they’ll get you outta shit.” Ichigo nodded, as he continued the dirty joke, “..Ok..so..A lawyer died and of course, he went to Hell. Well he’s standing at the gates of Hell and he‘s like, ‘Oh, man! Isn’t this a bitch?!’ When a demon comes up and sees the lawyer. So the demon…Renji. Renji, are you even listening..” Renji raised his right hand, hushing Ichigo. “Did you hear that?” Ichigo shook his head , “Hear what?” A chill ran up Renji’s spine, something wasn’t right; he could feel it in the air. A light shuffle of small feet and gentle sobbing caught his attention.
“Over there, look.” Ichigo turned his attention in the direction Renji indicated. She stood a distance of no more than about ten yards away from the two. In the moon’s silver light a small figure stood, it was a little girl. “Please help me, I can’t find my mommy.” Renji’s stomach started to knot up when he laid his bright green eyes on her. A feeling of fear swept over him causing a tears to build up in his eyes. “Please can you help me?”, the little girl inquired again. Renji placed his hand on his zanpakuto, he for thousands of years performed many soul burials and cleansed many hollows, but this was different. The little girl was different, and he didn’t like it.
She can’t be much older than five or six years old, Ichigo thought as he quickly walked towards her. Her hair looked as if it were made of pure gold, it came down past her waist and curled up slightly at the ends. Her skin was white, a fair ivory tone which complimented her blonde hair. Her eyes were a an oddity in themselves, they were bluish-purple in color - a sight Ichigo had never seen before. “Hey sweetheart, what’s wrong?“ The little girl sniffled as she gazed into his auburn eyes, “I can’t find my mommy and I want to go home.” Hiding her face behind long hair, she started to cry as she latched onto the teen’s leg, holding him tightly, gripping the black hakama in her tiny hands. “Hey, it’s ok calm down.”, he spoke benevolently as he reached with slender hands and placed one behind her head, the other on her shoulder. He gently caressed the little girl’s back, comforting her, or at least trying to.
The wind continued to blew gently as Renji looked on in astonishment and pondered, how can Ichigo, with his keen spiritual awareness, not sense it. How can he not sense that something about this little girl was amiss? She was a spirit, Renji could sense that, however, she wasn’t…right. His train of thoughts were broken at the sound of Ichigo’s voice, “My name is Ichigo, what’s your name?” “My name is Annabelle, but my mommy calls me Bell”, the tiny girl squeaked as she stared up towards Ichigo. She looks absolutely adorable in her little sapphire blue kimono, he thought as he knelt down to her height. Her hair gently blew in the light summer breeze, “Ichigo, will you help me find my mommy?” Ichigo smiled, he wanted to cry after hearing Bell’s question. He gave a sorrowful smile as he took her tiny hand into his, “Of course I will, Bell. Renji are you coming?”
Renji shook his head, his voice was hoarse, “Ich..Ichigo, I don’t….I..um…come here a minute. Alone. Without the girl.” Ichigo stared at Renji, puzzled, and turned his attention back towards Bell, “Wait here a minute, ok.” Bell nodded and looked on as Ichigo walked hastily over towards the faint looking red-head, “Renji what’s wrong? You don’t look like you feel good.” Renji nodded, “There’s a reason for that. Can you not sense it?” The teen cocked his head, “Sense what? Wh..What are you talking about?” Dumbfounded, Renji gasped, “The little girl, ya fool! Something’s not right about her, she‘s not…I don‘t know…she‘s different.” Ichigo smiled vindictively as he spoke in a hushed playful whisper, “What’s the matter Renji? Don’t tell me you’re afraid of little girls?” He brushed the side of Renji’s face with the back of long slender fingers. “It’s ok, I’ll protect you.” The disgruntled red-head knocked the teen’s hand away from his face, “Cut it out, Ichigo. This is serious, I believe there is something defiantly wrong here.”
“Renji, she’s dead, she’s a spirit.”
“No shit! You know I did not know that, thank you so much for pointing that out.”, Renji shook his head in disgust as a cloud drifted by causing a partial eclipse of the moon.
“Oh, any time - listen, there is nothing strange and/or different about this little girl. She is no different than any other spirit.” Renji raised an eyebrow as he tightened his grip on Zabimaru, “Hold up, where do you get off telling me what’s strange and what’s not? Need I remind you, that I am more experienced when it comes to strange, fucked up phenomena, such as, this little girl.” Ichigo rolled his eyes and shook his head whilst thinking Renji was too full of himself. He turned his back to the red-head, gave a half hearted wave, as he walked back towards Bell. “Where are you going?! Ichigo! Ichigo! Where are you going?! Get back here! Are you even listening to me?! DON‘T YOU WALK AWAY FROM ME!!! YOU GET YOUR ASS BACK HERE!” It only took Renji three strides, to catch up to his younger counterpart. He grabbed Ichigo by the shoulder and forced the teen to turn and face him. Amber eyes met emerald eyes, another cloud floated by causing another eclipse. Loose strands of long crimson hair blew gently in the wind, “Listen to me for a moment; please.” He gripped Ichigo’s shoulder tightly. “Something is seriously wrong with this little girl. She’s not a Hollow or an evil spirit…she’s something else, but I don’t know what. We should leave her alone, until we do a little research first.”
Ichigo sighed deeply as he brushed Renji’s hand off his shoulder. He stared into the red-head‘s eyes, “Renji, she’s lost, we need to take her to Soul Society.” Renji’s heart skipped a beat when he turned his attention from Ichigo to Bell. Now, exasperated, the red-head pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed deeply, he knew he had already lost the argument. “Tell ya what, we’ll keep a watchful eye on her until we figure everything out. Ok?”
Again, Ichigo brushed Renji‘s hand away and stepped back away from him, “Renji, if you’re so worried why don’t you come along with us?” Renji was tired of this game, he wanted nothing more than to go back to Urahara‘s shop, “No and I’m not worried. I’m uneasy about this girl, I really think it would be better if we just…Ichigo! NO! Don’t go, please.” The teen turned his back and again proceed to walk back towards Bell. “Will you ,please, listen to me?! ” The red-head reached out, as if to touch the air , “Ichigo, forget her and come with me please? Ichigo!?” Ichigo picked up Bell and gently positioned her on his hip, her head rested against his right shoulder. “Renji, I’ll be fine. There is absolutely nothing to worry about, you’re just tired. I tell ya what, go on back to Urahara‘s shop and get some sleep. I’ll see you first thing tomorrow morning.”
Renji stood absolutely still, he had to tell himself to breath, as he watched Ichigo open the gates to Soul Society. The wind picked up and the night had suddenly become cold. Renji did indeed return back to Urahara‘s shop; and the night gave way to day.

“Renji!”
“…..”
“Renji! Renji! Are still asleep?! Wake up!”
Renji slowly stirred to the sound of Tessai‘s deep voice, he could smell bacon and eggs cooking; yuck he thought. The room was cold despite the large amount of sunshine that filled it. As Renji made his way into the kitchen, he could hear Jinta bullying Ururu, as usual. I swear, when I see that brat, I’m going to smack that boy in the back of the head so damn hard… It’s to freakin’ early in the morning for this crap. Renji thought as he slowly staggered into Urahara’s kitchen. It was remarkably clean and organized - thanks to Tessai, no doubt - and tackily decorated, with chicken knick knacks. “Stop it, Jinta! That hurts!”, Ururu cried as Jinta continued to pull her pig tails. Now, Renji had been awake for about thirty or forty minutes, and he had decided that enough was enough. First of all, he was too old and it was too early in the AM for this crap and second, he hated kids. So he decided to interrupt the duos squabble by dealing Jinta a powerful wallop to the back of his head.
“OUCH! HEY! WHAT THE HELL DID YOU DO THAT FOR?!”, Jinta hollered as he rubbed the knot that had started to grow from the back of his head. “YOU COULD HAVE REALLY HURT ME YOU KNOW?!” Renji took a swig of the boy’s orange juice, “You mean it didn’t hurt. Well, here, let me try again.” Again, Renji raised his right hand and smacked the boy, “DAMMIT RENJI! THAT HURTS!” “Ah, the technique works.”, Renji mused aloud. The shinigami took another swallow of juice and flashed Jinta a sinister grin. “Are you going to behave, now?” Jinta started to snap back but, remembering how much the first two blows felt, he decided against. As everything calmed down Renji noticed something out of the ordinary, Urahara was no where to be seen. Usually the cheerful man was already awake by this time. "Where's everyone at this morning?" Ururu smiled shyly as she
answered Renji, "Mr. Urahara still in bed and I think Mr. Tessai has gotten lost somewhere along the way to
his room." Oh well, maybe Tessai is getting him a piece Renji mused quietly to himself.
As the children ate - Renji wasn’t a big breakfast eater so he didn’t eat anything - there was a knock at the door. “Ururu, go answer the door.”, Jinta barked with a mouthful of eggs. Renji gagged at the sight, “For God’s sake boy, swallow what’s in your mouth before you go to speak. Damn, don‘t nobody want to see that.” Jinta, smiled sadistically as he opened his mouth revealing bits of small and large chucks of yellow egg flesh to the shinigami lieutenant. Renji cringed at the sight, “STOP IT ALREADY, WOULD YA!?! Damn, your disgusting, I hope you choke.” Ururu giggled as the two guys continued to bicker. “Didn’t I tell you to go answer the door?”, the carrot top barked as he shoveled more food into his mouth. “Didn’t I tell you to behave?”, Renji inquired as he reached across the table and smacked the boy again, this time not as hard. Jinta threw a small handful of eggs at Renji, “You’re not my father nor my guardian, so piss off already.” Renji growled through his teeth and slammed his fist down on the table, “Be glad I’m not your father and be glad you’re not in my care, because, if you were I’d wear your little ass out. You have got to be the most misbehaved kid, I‘ve ever encountered. Children in the Rukongai district don‘t act half as bad as you.”
“I aim to please. Ururu, that door isn‘t going to answer itself.”
Ururu rolled her eyes as she got up from the table and answered the door. Isshin Kurosaki beat her back to the kitchen, he looked very distraught. All the color drained from Renji’s face upon Isshin’s arrival. Isshin tried to keep a straight face but his voice broke as he spoke, “Renji, where’s Ichigo? He didn’t come home last night; what happened to him?” It only took Renji a heartbeat’s second to jump up from his chair and rush over to Isshin. He grabbed the older man and held him tight in a protective and comforting embrace. He whispered softly as he gently caressed Isshin’s back, “It’s ok. Calm down, what do you mean he didn’t come home last night?” The children watched on, “See Ururu, I told you he was gay.” Renji shot Jinta a loathsome look and snapped his fingers then pointed to the backdoor. “Don’t you two have to open up the store?”
“Hey, I’m just saying the evidence is really starting to pile up, now. There‘s no need to get angry at me.”
“You. Store. Open. Now. Before I kill you. Take Ururu with you, and go get Urahara. Tell him he’s needed here in the kitchen and be sure to knock before you go barging in there.” Renji turned his attention back towards Isshin, he was inconsolable. “It‘s ok. It‘ll be ok, just talk to me.” A few moments later, Tessai entered the kitchen much to Renji’s surprise.
“Where’s Urahara?”
“Boss, isn’t feeling to well this morning; So, what can I do?”, Tessai placed his large hands on the doctor’s broad shoulders. Isshin continued to sob uncontrollably, in-between sobs he tried to talk to the two men. However, every other word that came out of his mouth was inaudible. Tessai shook his head, “Well this is a little too convenient. Renji gazed up at the larger man, puzzled, "Wh-What do you mean?" Tessai shook his head, "Never mind, its not important right now. Renji, you need to find Ichigo. Don’t worry about Dr. Kurosaki, I’ll take care of him.” The red-head nodded his head as he rushed off.
