***Author's Notes aka Mad Ramblings**
Sorry this has taken so long, the last year was hellish. For the two or three people interested in this, here ya go!Byakuya managed to untangle himself from his family members in time for the noon meal, which he ordered to be brought to Inari’s quarters on pack grounds. He had no desire to deal with his family any more today unless it was Ginrei. Word of the altercation that morning between Inari and his cousins had spread like wildfire. So now there were complaints and contemplations from his family and advisors as to whether or not she was actually suitable. He had known this was coming and had managed to put them all off. At least temporarily. He and Inari would have to have a year and a day contract drawn up quickly to circumvent any other matchmaking on his family’s part. He had zero intention of marrying anyone else at this point. And wasn’t it an odd thought overall? He glanced over at Rukia, who was escorting him. Since he and Inari weren’t officially engaged yet he couldn’t go anywhere on Pack grounds without a member of the Royal house.
“I take it you heard about the earlier incident,” he said. Rukia’s lips twitched up into a smile. “Oh, I heard it alright,” she said. “Did Inari really threaten to execute them where they stood?” “More or less, I suppose.” “They’re making other plans for a wife for you now, you know,” Rukia pointed out. “I am aware. I am also planning to at very least enter into the year and a day contracts with Inari regardless of their machinations.” “They won’t be happy about it.” Byakuya had to bite his tongue on the words “I could care less” but instead said, “They wanted me married, I will be. This was their initial decision to put us together. If they have complaints before the official signing of documents I will be informing them that Inari and I have a verbal contract in place already.” That wasn’t strictly the truth but they had discussed certain stipulations of a contract and had agreed upon it so it could be said it was a verbal contract. Rukia smiled up at him, noting the pleased expression on his face when he spoke of Inari. “I think the two of you will do well together,” she said. They paused briefly to give the final guard onto the Pack grounds the password before picking up the conversation again. “Surprisingly enough, I believe we will as well,” Byakuya said thoughtfully. Rukia smiled as they wound their way through the Pack grounds and to the barracks. Rukia took her leave just outside of the door, stating she needed to get back to wedding plans and such. Byakuya pushed the door open, surprised and pleased to find his meal already waiting for him along with another that he presumed had been brought for Inari. He turned slightly and noticed that the doors to the small shrine were open and incense burning there already. He smiled gently at Hisana’s picture and glanced curiously at the photograph set in the frame there. It wasn’t a formal portrait as most shrine pictures were but a candid one of a rather plain looking man with long, dark hair, braided and pulled over one shoulder, eyes closed, and playing some kind of instrument that was held under his chin. He was clearly lost in whatever he was playing and obviously unaware that he was being photographed. “It’s a violin,” Inari said from behind him. To his credit, Byakuya didn’t jump at the sound of her voice, though he was startled that he hadn’t heard her come into the room. He nodded. “I’d guessed that. I’ve heard them played before but I’ve never seen one personally. You’d mentioned before that he was a musician.” She smiled at that. “Yes, he certainly was. It’s how I like to remember him best,” she said, nodding to the photograph. “He made me promise not to put any solemn looking picture in his shrine. Not that I would have anyway.” Byakuya smiled a little at that statement. “I don’t doubt that for a moment.” “I suppose we should eat before Maki comes in and insists that I wear a kimono to visit with Ginrei,” Inari said, sitting down on one of the cushions. Byakuya followed suit, sitting across the small table from her and lifting the covers off of his food. After a few minutes of eating in companionable silence, he looked up at her. “Word seems to have spread like wildfire concerning this morning’s incident,” he said. “I’d think the gossips of your family failing at their jobs if it hadn’t,” Inari said with a chuckle. “Rukia says the family is already making plans to tie me to some other poor woman.” Inari chewed thoughtfully for a moment. “What are your thoughts on that?” “My thoughts on that aren’t fit for polite company,” Byakuya said stiffly. She laughed at that, feeling oddly relieved for some reason. “Well, I suppose we should get things done up quickly if that’s the case.” Byakuya nodded. “I’ll speak to my grandfather concerning it this afternoon and your brother this evening,” he said. “Oh, Isshin already had contracts drawn up. Evidently he quizzed Rukia at length concerning your interest and habits and he knows mine very well already,” she said, leaning sideways and digging into a drawer. She handed him several sheets of parchment. “There is space at the bottom for any codicils to be added just in case something wasn’t covered or was wrong in the initial contract.” Byakuya read through the contract quickly, noting that it was standard, no frills except for any mention of her obeying his orders and vice versa. “This is acceptable as far as I’m concerned. I take it you have no issues with it as well,” he said. Inari shrugged. “None at all.” He tapped the papers thoughtfully on his knee, thinking. “If my grandfather witnesses the signing of this there is little the rest of the family will say concerning it.” Inari grinned wickedly at that. “My thoughts exactly. I knew I liked you for some reason,” she said. Byakuya’s eyebrows went up at that statement. He’d had many people admire him in his life but few he could name had said they actually liked him. Inari returned the eyebrow lift with one of her own. “I’m marrying you, I’d better like you if either of us want to have an even vaguely peaceful union.” His lips twitched up slightly at that statement. “Logical. I knew I liked you for some reason.”
