Chapter 19 - Friends or Foes
Shinji arrived at the Vizards' hideout in almost record time. As soon as he put the two of them down, Hachigen started working on them and Shjini had to calm down a fuming Hiyori.
"Shinji, you dickhead, how could you allow someone to do this to Ichigo? And why did you even bring that bitch here?" yelled Hiyori and hit him in the face with her slipper once again. "This isn't even Ichigo! You already forgot what I told you not too long ago? She is Ichigo's friend so I couldn't simply leave her there to die. Besides, she's a nice girl," tried Shinji to defend himself. "Ceh! I'm not an idiot. I already know this isn't Ichigo," mumbled Hiyori and hit him again. "Then why are you still hitting me?!" whined Shinji. Hiyori suddenly stopped, dropped her slipper and grabbed Shinji by the tie. "Because this is still ichigo's body and we can't allow anything to happen to it until he's back and he decides whether he wants to join us or not." Shinji wasn't sure what was going to happen to Ichigo, but he didn't want to crush the hope some of them still had. "Don't worry, he'll be back. Orihime-chan and the Mod Soul are in good hands now so I'm going to let Kisuke know what happened. Talk to you later," said Shinji, turned around and left. "Like I give a damn what happens to this bitch," yelled Hiyori after him.As soon as Rukia killed the Hollow she headed home but to her horror she couldn't find Kon anywhere inside so the only logical conclusion was that something bad had happened to him. She made the decision to go to Urahara where there were more people who could help her find him, so that's why she was running down the streets when suddenly someone landed in front of her out of nowhere. She gasped, startled. He raised his head and Rukia was met with a familiar face. It was the new guy from Ichigo's class, Hirako Shinji if she remembered correctly. She couldn't help but wonder what he wanted, but that was of little importance at that moment. She ran past him, too scared that something wrong had happened to Kon to waste time on the person before her.
"I don't have time for this," she said as she passed him by. "Wait!" said Shinji and grabbed her arm. "The Mod Soul is fine." "You know where Kon is?" Rukia's eyes widened, relief washing over her at hearing his words. She couldn't help but be surprised that he knew so much though. She'd make sure to find out more about him later, but at that moment there was no time to waste. "Take me to him!" Her demanding tone left little room for arguing, but not to Shinji. "I'll explain when we get to Urahara." "Then what are we waiting for?!" Rukia grabbed him and mostly dragged him the entire way there. He didn't fight back, he was used to being around crazy women and also he knew that she was worried to death, he'd be too if someone he cared about would go missing. When Urahara was told by Rukia that Kon was missing he expected the worst, but he was relieved when he heard from Shinji what had really happened. The last thing they needed were some stupid thugs hurting Ichigo's body but it happened and all that was left was to make sure it'd never happen again. Rukia felt guilty and she couldn't shake that feeling no matter how much she tried. But there was something else she couldn't stop thinking about. She had to know. "Who exactly are you Hirako Shinji?" He wasn't sure how to answer her question, but he didn't mind if she knew. Sure, he couldn't stand most Shinigamis but the one before him seemed alright, and besides, Ichigo trusted her. Maybe he could leave her with a cryptic message and see if she could figure it out. "I'm like Ichigo." Rukia gasped, immediately figuring out what he meant, but didn't say anything. It didn't matter though, since the shopkeeper seemed to know him. Urahara might've done some mistakes in the past, but they managed to get past that. They all had one thing in mind, and that was to do anything in their power to save Ichigo. Shinji proceeded to tell them what happened, or at least what he assumed happened because when it came right down to it he got there at the end. The Mod Soul wasn't so useless, he managed to free himself and also to save the girl. He did faint thought, but he wasn't surprised considering the injuries he sustained and how much blood he had lost. "Take me to them!" Rukia demanded. "I can't exactly bring you into our hideout." ”You mean there's more of you out there?" Rukia gasped in surprise. "Oops, I've said too much, Hiyori might just kill me this time," Shinji laughed nervously while scratching the back of his head. "You bastard! I demand you tell me where Kon and Orihime are!" Rukia was seething, these were her friends he was talking about, it wasn't like she could trust someone she just met with their safety even if the guy was someone Urahara knew. "My, my, just relax, their are safe with Shinji, I can guarantee that. You need to calm down Kuchiki-san," said Urahara chuckling and snapped his fan closed. "Now, if you'll excuse, I have work to do." "What's more important than this?" snapped Rukia angrily at him. "Well, I'd say opening the portal to Hueco Mundo as soon as possible is more important," added Urahara in a serious tone, got up and left the room, not really caring how much those two bickered amongst themselves. He knew the horrors of what Aizen's sick mind could do better than anyone else and he couldn't stop thinking about Ichigo. Ever since he found out what happened he couldn't rest at all, so all he did was work on opening the portal as soon as possible. Tessai seemed quite upset that he refuse to even eat most of the times but there wasn't even a second he could spare on eating. He'd make sure to get something later though because if he collapsed from hunger he'd be of no use to anyone. Neither Rukia nor Shinji had noticed that Urahara seemed a bit pale as they were too busy to bark at each other like two angry dogs. "I asked you to take me to them you bastard, do not make me repeat myself!" Shinji yawned. For some reason the small Shinigami was starting to get on his nerves. Kisuke told her she could trust him and yet she didn't seem to have listened to a word he said. "Like I care! I'll be on my way now." He got up and opened the door, ready to leave her there so that he could go back and check on Orihime and the Mod Soul. This Rukia woman seemed decided to fight the answer out of him so before she decided to attack him he jumped into shunpo and disappeared from Rukia's sight so fast that she stood no chance in following after him in her Gigai. Even if she switched back to her Shinigami form it wouldn't have helped since someone with the same powers as Ichigo was out of her league. Rukia was extremely angry at being denied the right to see her friends but Urahara said she could rest assured so she tried to not go search for them all over town. She had hoped that Shinji would give up and take her along with him but she failed. It was probably better to wait at home so she left the shop and went back to the house. As soon as she opened the door Yuzu appeared out of nowhere wailing about how she couldn't find Ichigo after he promised he'd help her with something. She mentally cursed Kon. "Has something bad happened to Ichi-nii?" asked Yuzu quietly, the sight of her worried expression making Rukia cringe. "He's fine, him and Keigo have a project to finish for tomorrow so he might be late," lied Rukia with the first thing that came to her mind. "Oh... then I'll go call Asano-san!" said Yuzu, her expression suddenly changing. "That way he can pass me Ichi-nii and I can ask him what he wants for dinner!" "NO!" yelled Rukia after Yuzu. "He said he's going to eat there so he won't be hungry once he gets back." "I see! In that case I'll go finish my homework so I can afterwards start preparing dinner for the rest of us." Rukia sighed... it was going to be a long day.Meanwhile, over at the Vizards' hideout, Kon was slowly starting to come back to his senses. He could hear noises, words being spoken but he couldn't make them out, and yet he was under the impression that someone was calling his name. There it was, the words were starting to sound clearer, and someone was calling for him, but wait, no, it wasn't his name, it was...
"Yo, dickhead! Wake up already!" He opened his eyes and stood frozen in shock. How dare that little girl call him a dickhead? "What the hell is your problem? Watch how you talk to me!" snapped Kon back at her and quickly got on his feet, thinking that he might intimidate her enough to apologize and then leave. "I'm calling you a dickhead, dickhead!" she said, disgust written all over her face. He clenched his fists in anger, trying really hard not to punch her since she was a girl. "You should be calling me Ko-eh-Ichigo-sama, you annoying midget!" The next second, a loud noise echoed throughout the place as Hiyori punched him so hard in the face that he flew into the air and then fell onto the ground with a thud. "No one calls me a... midget... and gets away with it," Hiyori said, shaking in anger and waving her fist around threateningly. "I just finished healing him..." Hachigen added dejectedly. When Hiyori started her madness streak it was impossible to stop her, the only one who had the guts to even attempt something like that being none other than Shinji who unfortunately wasn't there at that moment. Kon cursed. What the hell was going on? How could that midget be so strong? And where the hell was he? The last think he remembered was going home from school and then... He quickly got up, pain completely ignored and forgotten, his eyes frantically searching for Orihime, which were soon fixed on her still sleeping form, somewhere close, near a really big guy. He rushed to her side and dropped to his knees, then grabbed her right hand with his and slowly caressed her soft locks. "Orihime-chan, I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, please forgive me. Are you ok? Please answer me," whined Kon, desperate for a sign that would let him know she was alright. "You needn't worry, she will be fine. You as well, I healed both of you to the best of my abilities," said Hachigen, a smile adorning his face. Kon let go of Orihime's hand and quickly touched his face to feel the damage done to him. In his worry for her he had completely forgotten that he as well had gotten injured that time. He felt the skin on his entire face and was surprised to know that somehow everything had been healed in a way that he thought only Orihime could heal. To the man before them both, whoever he was, Kon was truly thankful. "Thank you old man, for healing both me and Orihime-chan. I don't know what I would've done without you... wait, how did I get here in the first place...? Ahhh!!! I remember seeing that guy from school, Shinji!" "He was the one who brought you here and told me to take good care of you." "Ah, well, in that case, where is he so I can thank him?" Although he wasn't showing it, Kon couldn't help but be suspicious of them. He didn't know them and also, how could someone besides Orihime heal his injuries to such a degree that not even scars would remain? The feeling of wanting to get out of there grew stronger with each passing second. He slowly got up, Orihime in his arms. "Well then, I'd better get going now, my family is waiting for me and if I stay here any longer they'll get worried," he said trying to sound cheerful. Hiyori, who in the meantime walked to them, laughed mockingly. "Since when does a Mod Soul have family?" Kon paled, feeling that something was definitely wrong. "Please stop, you're scaring him away, and he's now injured again because of you" Hachigen pleaded. "Pfff, what would a midget like you even know?" mocked Kon since he couldn't keep his mouth shut. Hiyori was fuming, which in turn made Hachigen be on full alert. Before she managed to kick him again, uncaring of the fact that he had someone in his arms, Hachigen quickly raised a barrier and stopped her blow just in time. Kon look at her in shock and then his eyes darted around for an escape. He noticed there were other people in there as well, but unlike the annoying little girl and the giant man, they didn't seem to care much about him. How he wished the midget was a guy so that he could kick her ass to hell and back. "Should we stop them?" asked Love who was not that far away from the scene unfolding before their eyes. "They're kids, leave them be," said Lisa after raising her head from the manga she was reading, then quickly going back to it. "Are you reading perverted manga again?" Love asked, seemingly bored. "I'm not going to give it up until I'm done with it." "Fine, fine, I guess I'll have to wait then," he mumbled, then yawned and turned his head back to the spectacle before them. "Orihime-chain", Kon softly called her name, "I think it's better to... run now and ask questions later!" Kon decided he had to get away right at that second so he started running towards the stairs, figuring out that it was the only way out since the place looked so much like the place that Urahara had under his store. "What an Idiot, they can't escape as long as the barrier is up," laughed Hiyori knowing that Hachigen's barrier was impenetrable. To Kon's surprise, no one followed him but the reason for that was soon discovered as he ran directly into an invisible wall, dropping Orihime and hurting himself in the process. The impact was strong enough to wake Orihime from her slumber. "Ouch, that hurt," said Orihime and rubbed her sore shoulder. "I'm sorry Orihime-chan, please forgive me," pleaded Kon in despair because of the guilt he felt at getting Orihime hurt more than once in only one day. "Kon! Your face! Your wounds, they are healed, what happened? How is this possible?" she asked while squeezing him really hard to her bossom. "I don't know," he finally managed to answer while trying his hardest to breath. He actually had to push her away for being so clingy as much as he hated to do it, but there were more pressing matters at hands. "I'll tell you later, right now we need to get out of here. It seems like there is a barrier of some sorts," Kon said and helped Orihime get up. "Maybe I can help." Kon almost forgot the situation they were in when he saw her smile so brightly. He really was happy she was fine. He didn't know what she was trying to do but to his surprise, not long after she got up, she managed to somehow get past the barrier, or at least a part of her body. "Kon, grab my hand." He did as he was told and a few moments later they were both out. There was no time to celebrate so he tightened his hold on her hand and encouraged her to run along with him."It would appear they have managed to escape," said Hachigen to Hiyori, a drop of sweat rolling down the side of his face.
"WHAAAAAAAAAT?!" The next instant Hiyori was out the door, her mind set on breaking that Mod's Soul neck, but before she could advance any further she was grabbed by her waist and pulled back. "Where do you think you're going?" asked Shinji, a grin adorning his face. "Shinji, you dickhead! Pervert, let me go!" yelled Hiyori while struggling against him. "Let me go before they go too far, I have to bring them back!" "Neah, you don't. I only brought them here because this place was closer than Uarahara's and it was an urgent situation. I had no plan on keeping them here, so there is no need to follow them. I am however surprised that they managed to get past Hachi's barrier. If I were to guess I'd say it was Orihime-chan's doing," whispered Shinji in Hiyori's ear and squeezed her small body tighter to his chest. "Ceh, whatever! Now let me go you perverted asshole before I freakin' kill you!" Shinji let her go and jumped back, barely missing a punch to his face, then ran away to the basement, knowing that Hiyori wouldn't stop chasing him until she'd land at least one hit. It was ok though, he didn't care, he was just happy he had managed to save two of Ichigo's friends, hopefully scoring a few points in Ichigo's eyes with his actions, giving him more reasons to join them... if... they could ever rescue him before it was too late.By the time they managed to get to a safe enough distance from where they escaped it had gotten dark outside. Kon made sure to take Orihime home and only once she was safe he went back to retrieve their bags. He sneaked around for a bit until he was sure no one was still around and only then did he dare go into the open and pick them up. It was a bit shocking to see the place where it all happened, the amount of blood from him, Orihime and the thugs that got injured as well all over the ground. Those bastards really managed to mess him up, thought Kon, but what was done was done, the important thing was that they were both safe and that the damage they both suffered had been reversed by the big guy he met in that suspicious place. He couldn't really leave Orihime without her books and notebooks and give them the next day since she'd surely need them to do her homework so she passed by her house before finally going back to his own. He softly knocked on the door patiently waiting for her to open it.
"Who is it?" a voice sounded from the other side. "Kon, I brought your bag." There was a click and then the door opened only to reveal a smiling Orihime. "Thank you Kon, it was very kind of you. I knew you'd do this, now please come in." "Ehhh? Why?" he asked surprised. "You can't exactly go home looking like that, you will scare Yuzu-chan to death." With no other choice but to listen to her since she was absolutely right, he got in and then went into the shower after she prepared some clothes that belonged to her brother so that he could wear once he got out. It was bit strange to know he was showering in her house and that made his heart pound a bit faster. He looked in the mirror, noticing how bloodied his school uniform was, the shirt even cut across the chest. He mentally cursed, then took his clothes off and turned on the hot water in the shower. They should've allowed him to go back to his plushie Gigai, that way he wouldn't have to get so embarrassed while washing Ichigo's body. He washed fast, not dwelling for long on any part of his body, wanting to get it done as soon as possible. He had showered before while in ichigo's body since it all happened a few days before but it was always as awkward as it was at that moment. Once he was finally done he got out, wiped away the water with a towel Orihime had given him earlier, got dressed and left the bathroom. "Thank you for everything Orihime-chan." "No, no, I did it because I wanted to. I know... it was a bit... selfish of me, but-" "Please don't do it again, I can't stand seeing you hurt like that in front of my eyes while I can't do a thing to stop it," said Kon and cupped her cheek with his hand. "I couldn't let them hurt you... or... Ichigo..." she whispered so slow that Kon barely heard her. So that was it, of course, she didn't want to see Ichigo's body get injured. He lowered his head, unable to look at her any longer, then gently removed his hand from her soft and warm skin. He turned around, grabbed his bag, along with the bloodied uniform he stuffed inside a plastic bag then opened the door and got out, not before thanking her for her hospitality. He couldn't look her in the eyes anymore, at least not at that moment in time. He felt somewhat disappointed, even though he had no reason. He couldn't really blame her either, still, why did it hurt so much? Getting home was easy from there, especially since it was night and he could use his powers to get there faster. They weren't anything special, but sometimes they were useful. As soon as he got home and opened the door Yuzu ran to him and welcomed him with her usual innocent and bright smile. Rukia appeared as well, relief washing over her at seeing that he was safe. "Ichi-nii, Rukia-nee-san said you already ate so I didn't prepare anything. I hope that's fine with you." "It's alright, I'm not hungry," Kon played along, knowing that Rukia would explain everything once he was in his room. He went upstairs and Rukia followed. As soon as he got in and Rukia closed the door, she started yelling at him. "You idiot! Are you trying to worry me to death? Are you even fine? Let me see," she said and grabbed his face then looked intently trying to find any injury he might've sustained. "I'm not hurt, some big guy healed all of my injuries somehow. Orihime-chan is also fine, we're both fine so please stop worrying." "Please don't disappear like that again," she begged and hugged him for the very first time, happy that both Kon and Ichigo's body were safe. "I'll try not to," he mumbled and hugged her back.TBC
