Chapter 17 - The Battle Between Worlds
Sayas POV:
My eyes widened as the vicious stories that had been told to me about the previous battle with one that had taken out the former captain and 10 highly trained shinigami of squad zero. The very reason I had been summoned to train in the ranks of the Souls Kings Soldiers ran through my brain. What had I learned? Was I ready to face such a monster? The emergency signal rang through the sky summoning the first line into battle between worlds. Without even thinking I striped down and practically jumped into my uniform strapped my zanpukatos to my back and ran for the door where Isao was studying the destructive spectacle that ranged through the reflection of the distant portal. He ran across the hall to his room emerging within what felt like seconds. As ready as I to go into a wicked scene against an unknown opponent we watched the flash of cerros reap havoc on our comrades before making a move to jump into action. Captain Hikifune's voice barreled down the hall as voluptuous as her engorged body, she approached us in a huff.
"Why are you two not out there? You are leaders...now go lead while I gather the rest of the troops here!"
Taking chase we pulled out our zanpukatos, no longer worried about the trivial situation in my bedroom but now faced with a fight that could quite possibly take our lives as we moved in to the battle taking place so close to the a world that we could not allow to be penetrated. Not only a world but a King that we had sworn to protect.
My flash step served me well as dodged the multiple array of cerros that seemed to tear holes through the air as we crossed over to the battlefield between worlds. Such a sight before me, I couldn't help but think back to my last real battle that left me weak and shaken as I was rescued by Kisuke from the Menos Grande that threatened to take my life. In the brief seconds that the memory and emotions came coursing through my head I made my decision, I will be strong... I will not die tonight...I will not be afraid! A flame ignited within me coursing through my blood as I called out to Zen and Haku to awaken from their slumber. A new strength overwhelmed me as I did not here their voice in my head but instead was surprised by a familiar but distant cry.
"I may not be there but I still look to protect you!" echoed in my soul.
Hiragana Zen, Hiragana Haku I ordered their obedience as the black flames ignited and my two dragons appeared beside me, ready to engage in battle. Neither made a sound just a pure focus and clarity as I sent them one by one to fend off the attacks of our enemy in either direction. The brilliant red cerros ceased for a moment as my captain and Isao joined me to regroup and assess the situation. I couldn't help but to feel like sitting ducks as we waited for one to appear.
"How many are there? Has anyone seen them?" I asked as my eyes constantly scanned the area.
"I feel the presence of two but I have yet to see them either" Hikifune said back.
I gripped onto the hilts of my zanpukatos with an internal eagerness to protect as a wicked laugh bounced like a ghost from the high walls to my left.
Finally Zen's voice broke free in my mind, "Stand tall and fight with the will to protect and kill, knowing that you are protected by us!"
Haku's voice rang clear as well, "Join us to fight as one and we will reign victorious knowing that his strength is with you!"
His strength, I questioned. What did he do to me I asked as I felt an uncontrollable burst of strength and confidence engulf me.
You silly girl, did you really think that he would let you go without making sure that he could protect you in some way!? Snapped Zen cutting my naive nature short, "Can't you feel it coursing through you body? A strength, a calm that wasn't there before. He allowed that, now use it and defeat this evil!"
My eyes widened and I found my body moving on instinct as the cerros began once more and our two opponents appeared on either side of us. Combining my zanpakutos at their hilts, they united into one large double sided zanpakuto upon awakening the power of my bankai.
"Bankai… Fushicho" I called out evoking a whirling wind that surrounded me; releasing a burst of spiritual pressure. Such an energy that my captain was left stunned by the spectacle.
My enemy in my sights, I struck forth the silver winged phoenix that rose from the ground and flew to my aide, destroying everything in its path. An ability that before that moment I had been unable to not only control much less sustain long enough for an accurate attack. Frozen to the ground I watched the sparkling flames rush through the tight space as it honed in on its fleeing target. My mind cold, I toyed with the monster as it made every attempt to flee from the vicious attack that I controlled with little empathy. His eyes met mine as his life came to an end abruptly just steps from my captain. A smile dripping of pure evil engulfed the face of my enemy sending shivers down my back as watched his body turn to dust. The image wavered my focus, leaving me surprised by my own abilities and disregard for life; even for the life of something so dreadful. His face no remorse, like he welcomed to sweet release of death with open arms; a mere prisoner of this world, a pawn to set in motion a much larger chain of events.
The world seemed to move in slow motion as I turned to hear the cries and gasps from the others, now in position behind my captain. Each stood tall responding to the order to stand their ground to protect the entrance to the realm of the Soul King. Now ready to stand at my Captains side in battle I made way toward an exhibition of pure strength that even I stopped to take notice of. Every breathe felt like it could be my last as I summoned the overwhelming strength that surrounded me, focusing my sights on the new enemy. My body tired from the release of my Bankai, I struggled to hold on to the little strength left. Rushing to aide my captain I watched in terror as the Arrancar quickly adapted to her techniques now visibly quicker than even her; now able to block her every move. It was as if the creature had her same ability, using the that knowledge to strike in the most logical opening only to choose the same that she defended. The crash of their blades sent sparks flying in all directions upon each encounter and my captains weight in a steady decline. Her reiatsu, present by her weight, now sheading with every attempt to fend off the creature. Finally the monster gained the lucky blow that he had been searching for sending my captain soaring to a nearby wall with a vicious kick to the abdomen. Isao and the other troops briefly look at their leader who was now momentarily finished with the fight. Her body now slender and week, only by the standards of the zero division, calling forth her Bankai as she stood from the rubble that was created from the impact. I suddenly stopped just yards before him as the Arrancar held out his hand to summon a brilliant red cerro, larger than any that we had seen throughout the entire fight. The pressure yielded as strong as my captains, I sought only to protect.
Quick to think, I yelled out the highest kiddo enchantment that I could remember, "Bakudo number 81"
A blue shield formed behind me sheltering the troops, Isao and my captain; leaving only myself venerable to his devious attack. I trembled while gripping my zanpukato and digging my feet into the ground. Still in Bankai form, I called fourth my phoenix once more. It rose from the ground, its wings extended ready for its assault. My enemy's eyes were glowing red with the venom of hatred and a smirk much like his partner who's life I had just ended only moments before. With my last bit of energy and concentration I sent my phoenix to destroy the non-wavering being that stood before me. He too released a thunderous attack; the ball of Hell that my weak mind couldn't stop.
My captains voice rang out as she screamed my name and gasps came from the ones looking on, "Saya... No!"
I glanced back to see her approach the barrier that I had placed before them all. Desperate for me to stand down so that she too could release her Bankai onto the demon that I was forced to face. Turning my head back to the enemy, my eyes gazed back in time to see my attack take affect. The heat brought sweat dripping down my face as I held my zanpakuto in front of me in hopes that it would block the counter attack that was barreling back at me. Upon impact, I released a large gasp, tasting the burnt flesh that filled the air, followed by a gut winching scream that seemed to echo off the walls as the red energy passed through me; dispersing as it struck the barrier that my kiddo called held strong. Falling to my knees I felt a warm release pour from my side as my world quickly faded in and out. The sounds around me now muffled as I looked the pool of blood that seemed to quickly grow in size. My body so cold as the shock wave of energy blew around me like a tornado of destruction from the heightened attack that I had launched. My mind in shock, I glanced to see the ashes from the foe I destroyed dancing in the harsh wind that slowly dissipated before me. My eyes blinked twice then darkness took over my world as I felt my body finally give into the pain and nothingness that surrendered me to the ground.
Like a rag doll I rested on my back, only able to hear the voices and see the shadows of those around. Hikifunes voice called out to retrieve the hot spring demon to heal my wounds.
"Bring me Captain Kirinji… Now!" She ordered franticly.
Isao's voice answered back quickly to her demand as he knelt down at my side, placing his hand in mine.
"Capatin Kirinji is away… he will not set to return until tomorrow." Worry quivered in his words.
Unable to control the shutter that came with his cold hands upon me, he used his reitsu to help heal the excruciating fire that enveloped my side. He suddenly stopped only to cradle me in his arms as he rose to his feet.
"We have to take her to the Soul Society!" he begged Hikifune not as a soldier to his captain but as a child to his mother.
Her silence was brief coupled with hesitation in her voice that I even heard in my state.
"Yes… but you will stay here!" she ordered him as I felt my body move from one set of arms to another and my soul sent soaring.
