Chapter 11
The back room felt much too crowded and warm, and not one of them had yet to speak since they entered to discuss the situation. Uryu met his father's glare with equal frigid anger, while Ichigo sat close beside him for support. Maybe the shameless kiss had been a bit too much, but it was one worry that was out of the way. It was just as he knew it would be from his father.
Renji had taken a interest in staring into his tea cup. Rukia sat with her hands folded on her lap, perfectly still. Chad held Orihime's hand, who was nibbling on her bottom lip nervously, looking from Ryuken and Uryu like she was waiting for a bomb to explode between them. Isshin looked prepared to defuse that bomb if necessary.
Urahara sipped his tea, choosing to let the awkward silence stretch, the brim of his hat shadowing any expression he may have had. Nemu stood beside Mayuri, hands clasped behind her back, and the only one in the room to be showing no emotion whatsoever. Her Captain on the other hand looked sickeningly delighted, watching them all, wild eyes swiveling to each of them in deep observation.
"Well, since no one else wants to speak, I'll begin," Mayuri said, tilting his head at a uncomfortable looking angle. "A few questions first." He pointed a finger in Uryu and Ichigo's direction. "Have you two fornicated, and if so, how often?"
"What?!" Ichigo and Uryu yelled in unison.
"That is disgusting and completely inappropriate," Ryuken hissed and turned his glare to the Shinigami.
Mayuri was unfazed by the outburst and shrugged his shoulder. "Please, it is a simple inquiry from a scientific point of view. Don't act as if you humans don't practice this joining of flesh as often as you can. I am merely interested that a Shinigami and a Quincy would mate in such a way. Though, it would be more interesting if one of you was female. With some time and painful surgery, I could change that if one of you would like to volunteer." His tooth filled grin widened with the prospect.
"Sick bastard!" Ichigo lunged upward, but Uryu grabbed him to stop his attempt to get at the sick bastard in question. He was just as angry, but they didn't have time to entertain the mad man and his sadistic ideas. Isshin was holding back Ryuken in a similar hold, grimacing at Mayuri with disgusted annoyance.
"Captain Kurotsuchi, please. This is not what we are here to discuss, and it is not your place to question them in such a way," Rukia said.
"Pfft, I was just commenting on what everyone else in the room was afraid to."
"I'm pretty sure offering to take a guys manhood is stepping over the line too," Renji added, face still etched in a shocked expression that would have been funny if not for the serious tone in the room.
"Yeah, that is disturbing," Chad added in a low tone, arm around a red-faced Orihime.
"Bah, you're all being boring," Mayuri scoffed.
Urahara sat his tea cup down and cleared his throat. "Mayuri, considering many people here in this room thought you were behind these attacks up to this point, maybe it would be a good idea to tone down the creepy vibe."
Mayuri's frown deepened. "Very well."
"Besides," Urahara continued, "I'm sure you're more interested in the reason we are actually gathered for and not what these two young men do in private." His head tilted down ever so slightly, his sharp gaze shadowed and poised directly at Mayuri.
"Of course," he said slowly. "No need for the look of death, Kisuke." He folded his arms indignantly. "And you call me the creepy one."
"I just want to know if any more progress was made while I was unconscious," Uryu said, sitting back more comfortably once he was satisfied Ichigo was calm again.
Mayuri spoke again, but he was finished with his twisted questions for now. "The Shinigami that attacked you and Ichigo was part of Division 12 about a year ago. Saburou was his name and he was an annoying nuisance, always asking me questions and hovering around when I was in the research department. He even asked about the Quincy. It got so bad that I kicked him from the division on a whim. Where he went after that, I don't know. I just assumed another division got him."
"You didn't think any of his questions were strange?" Uryu asked.
"It was of no consequence to me what the subject was. I was just irritated by his constant inquisitive nature."
"And what about Hiyosu? He was one of the heads of the research department, and part of your division. He wasn't being suspicious in any way?" Ichigo asked.
"No," Mayuri sneered. "He never gave any indication he was up to anything, and he was one of my best, which makes his betrayal all the more infuriating. I suspect he was the one who got into my personal research files and was able to hide it so well."
"So, the device we found on him was yours?" Ichigo asked, glaring again.
"Don't give me that look, boy. A man like myself is always experimenting, researching and creating. Even Kisuke can understand that." Urahara nodded slightly in agreement and sipped his tea. "To answer your question though, yes, part of that device was something I was working on, but only part. He added to it, enhanced and changed some of it's features to serve his purpose."
"What about his ability to look like Renji?" Uryu pushed on.
"Yes, another one of my inventions. You simply need a sample of blood from the individual you want to appear as."
Renji looked towards Ichigo and Uryu, eyes all guilt again. "We think he may have gotten some of mine after I fought a Hollow that day. Had a cut and I left some blood behind."
"It's not your fault, Renji," Uryu said, looking directly at Mayuri. "Though I question why a sane person would make something like that."
"He's not sane," Ichigo said in a loud whisper.
Mayuri's eyes bulged as his teeth ground so hard you could hear the grating from across the room, but Uryu felt much too weary to even question the freakish Captain anymore. He closed his eyes and sighed, laying his head on Ichigo's shoulder, again not caring who saw. He heard Isshin mutter something in warning. He could only guess it was to Ryuken. He'd almost died, and all his father was concentrated on was he and Ichigo. At least his father's judgmental mood was no mystery.
"Is it over, or are there more of them?" Uryu asked tiredly.
"We think there are more, and that they may be based here on the mortal world," Urahara said. "There has been no unauthorized movement through the Precipice World since they found the recordings that revealed Hiyosu traveling through it that night Ichigo battled him. They found a few other times further back before that, around the time other Quincy were murdered."
"Evidence was found that he was also communicating with someone here on the mortal world," Rukia said. "Probably Saburou and the others they were working with. I'm sorry we didn't find all this out sooner, Uryu."
"Not your fault." Uryu looked at his wrist that his cross graced and touched over the silver. His eyes narrowed when something occurred to him. He looked at his other wrist where Urahara's bracelet still was. "Urahara, this didn't work." Uryu lifted his wrist towards him. "He was still able to hide himself and his reiatsu from me."
Urahara looked genuinely surprised. "How about yours, Ichigo?"
"I can't really say, but when I think back on it, when I thought he was Renji, I couldn't feel anything off him," he sighed. "That should have been a tip off, but I was careless."
"Have you taken them off at all?"
"Not me," Uryu said. "It's been on since you handed them out to us." Ichigo was also shaking his head no in answer. Urahara looked at the others and got the same confirmation. "It's not typical for your inventions not to work, right?" Uryu asked.
"No." Urahara frowned in thought. "All of you, take them off and I'll have a look. It could be a slight miscalculation on my part. I won't know for sure until I can examine them." Each of them handed their bracelet over without complaint, but there was obvious tension in the room.
"You think maybe they were tampered with?" Renji asked, watching Urahara closely.
"I won't say it's not a possibility." Perplexed, Urahara picked one of them up, eyeing the silver band. "Like I said though, I'll have to examine them thoroughly to be sure of what happened." He put it back on the table and looked at the surrounded group. "Until then, searching Karakura Town and the outskirts to find their base of operation should be our next course of action."
"What should we look out for exactly? If they hide themselves so well in battle, wouldn't their hideout be just as secure from view?" Renji asked.
"That goes without saying," Urahara said with a slight nod. "Still, we have to go on the offensive here are stop waiting for attacks. Yoruichi is already searching as we speak."
"I want to know why they're doing this," Uryu said.
"Maybe they're scared of you," Urahara said, picking up his cup to take a sip.
"Scared? I find that unlikely." Uryu said, touching his cross, getting comfort from it.
"Don't be too sure," Urahara said, then looked to Mayuri. "Think you can come up with something that can disrupt the device until I figure out what's going on?"
"Of course I can, it is from my invention after all." He smirked at the blond. "Paint me surprised that your little bracelets didn't do the job, Kisuke."
Urahara didn't take the bait. He simply gathered the bracelets and stood. "All of you, be careful. They may be getting more desperate at this point."
"Don't worry about us," Renji said and stood with Rukia. "We'll start searching." Urahara nodded to them as they left.
The room slowly emptied until there was just Ichigo, Uryu, Isshin and Ryuken. The tension only seemed to intensify, and Uryu caught his father's judgmental eyes again. Isshin was a polar opposite of his father, his expression soft and understanding. Unfortunate that he couldn't talk sense into his friend. Though Isshin just being there was probably why he hadn't exploded completely already.
"I'd like to talk to you in private, Uryu," Ryuken said, voice firm.
"Alright," he said. Ichigo started to protest, but Uryu shook his head and muttered for he and Isshin to go. If it was a heart to heart he wanted, so be it. He had expected it actually. The two men left and Uryu waited for it.
"How long has this been going on?" he started off.
"Not long," he answered calmly. "Right after I was attacked the first time."
Ryuken chuckled harshly. "I told Ichigo to stick by your side. I didn't tell him to seduce you into this ridiculous folly," he snapped and started to pace back and forth.
"It's not ridiculous," Uryu snapped back, feeling his anger slowly boiling in the pit of his stomach.
"You two cannot be in this kind of relationship. It won't work."
"Why?"
"Other than the obvious reason, you are a Quincy, one of the last, and he's a Shinigami."
"He's a Shinigami? Really, that's one of your argument points?!"
"Uryu, you're young. You have plenty of time to find a nice woman, perhaps another Quincy."
Uryu rubbed his eyes and sighed. "You said it yourself, I'm one of the last left. Where are you going to find this Quincy woman that you can force me into marriage with?!"
"That is not what I meant. I wouldn't force you into a marriage, I simply.."
"You want to tell me who I can and can't be with. That's what it boils down to." Uryu shook his head. "You haven't been a real father to me in years and you've been a cold-hearted bastard since mom died, but now you think you can just tell me who I can have a relationship with?"
"I am still your father." Ryuken's tone softened a fraction as he knelt near where Uryu still sat. "Try to understand what I'm saying, Uryu."
"I can't understand it," he said in defiance.
Ryuken shook his head. "We'll discuss this more after the emergency situation is taken care of. For now, until this is all over, I'd like you to come home. That little apartment of yours isn't safe."
"My apartment is fine. I don't want to stay at the mansion. It doesn't feel like a home, it feels like a museum." Uryu folded his arms and looked away from him, missing the hurt expression on his father's face.
"Very well. Your stubbornness knows no bounds," Ryuken said and stood. "Continue to be careful, Uryu. As cold-hearted as you think I am, I don't want to lose my only son." He left without another word.
