Inari was moving fast toward the compound, Ookami at her side when another explosion rocked the ground again. She glanced up and tensed at the fire lighting the sky. “Not fast enough,” she snarled through clenched teeth. “Ookami, merge.” “Hai, Inari-sama,” the wolf said, shifting slightly behind her and merging her physical form with Inari’s. Merged as they were it was much faster getting to the Kuchiki compound. They rounded a corner and the whole of the compound was brought into view along with a mass exodus of people screaming and trying to flee the fire all around them and the towering black clad forms of the Menos Grande surrounding the area. A wave of pink caught Inari’s attention as the beautiful and lethal blades swirled up and around one of the intruders. “Split,” Inari said and the wolf disengaged from her body. “He’s quite the fighter,” Ookami said. “You should marry him.” “Hahahaha. I don’t know of anyone else who has a smart ass zanpakto,” Inari grumbled, looking for a way through the flames. “I am part of your soul, remember,” Ookami said. “Thank you so much for reminding me. How do we get in? There doesn’t seem to be an opening anywhere.” The zanpakto shrugged. “Sometimes you have to just go through the fire,” she said. “To the limit and to the wall,” Inari murmured. “Didn’t think that would be literal.” Ookami looked at her oddly. “Part of the song?” “How do you know about that?” Inari said with a frown, still looking for an opening somewhere in the flames. “We are connected, Inari-sama. What you hear, I hear, what you know, I know. It’s as simple as that,” Ookami said moving down and around one side of the wall of the compound where there was a miniscule opening in the fire. She glanced over one shoulder at her master. “Senbonzakura said he was hearing it, so my guess is that his master does as well.” “Just what I need,” Inari said. “As if following the physical embodiment of my sword’s spirit isn’t strange enough.” “Not for your life, Inari-sama.” “So very true.” 8888 In the meantime, Byakuya and his grandfather were fighting back to back, trying to remove as many hollows as they could. Byakuya was glad that his grandfather had been at the compound at the time and that the older man had been a Captain himself once. It certainly helped in the fight. He frowned slightly upon feeling the solid press of power hit him hard and at high speed before pausing outside the walls of the compound. His grandfather glanced over one shoulder at him. “Byakuya? Who is that?” he asked, leveling another slash at one of the towering forms. The corners of Byakuya’s lips tilted up slightly when he recognized the energy. “That would be my future bride, Grandfather,” he said, sending a flurry of Senbonzakura’s blades up and around again.888
“Ookami, can you jump the wall?” Inari asked. “Most likely.” “Then toss me up and over first.” Ookami looked at her oddly for a moment before doing as her master instructed. Inari tucked and rolled as she landed to minimize any damage before glancing up to assess the situation. “Damn it, surrounded,” she growled over her shoulder, hearing Ookami land behind her. “Ginrei is with him,” Ookami said, looking into the small gap between the Menos. “Thank all the gods for that one,” Inari said and set about getting the attention of the nearest Hollow. “Reinforcements at ten, twelve and six, Inari-sama,” Ookami said while ripping one of the Hollows apart with her claws. “Coming in fast. Feels like Pack.” Inari glanced away from the Hollows long enough to see Kali and two other Pack members pop up and over the wall, then head for the closest adversaries. “Orders, Alpha?” one of the Pack shouted over the din. “Take out the outer flanks and work in and keep clear of Captain Kuchiki’s attacks,” Inari called. “We’re crazy, not stupid, Alpha,” Kali groused off to one side of Inari. “I know that, it’s why you’re here,” Inari said. “Yeah, if you’d stop sneakin’ off we might have been here sooner. Damn it! How many of these bastards are there?” Kali asked, splitting one from top to bottom. “Enough to make things difficult,” Inari said, shifting and cutting another one down but not before it ripped open her left shoulder. She gritted her teeth against the pain. “Okay, no more playing around. Ookami, with me,” she called and shifted slightly as the zanpakto manifested beside her. “Can you clear a path for us?” The wolf’s ears perked up and she grinned at her master. “Is your mate beautiful?” she said. “Give the order.” “Everybody, duck and cover! Sing, Ookami!” The wolf tossed back her head and howled, the physical sword started to vibrate in Inari’s hand as power worked from the hilt and through the blade, streaming outward and disintegrating the Hollows directly in front of her. Both of them darted through the gap before the Hollows could shift around and block the path to Byakuya and Ginrei, who were still on the ground. Doubtlessly the older man had heard Inari’s order to duck and cover and knew what was coming. Byakuya glanced up from his place on the ground where his grandfather had forced him down at Inari’s order and tensed when he saw her. She was covered in blood and he knew it had to be her own since the Menos didn’t bleed, just crumbled to dust. “Bya, can you split Senbonzakura’s attack?” Inari asked, skidding to a halt in front of him. “Yes, but it would diminish the power,” Byakuya said, getting to his feet and fending off the nearest Hollow. “Not if I use Ookami to strengthen it,” Inari said, slicing the one off to her right apart. Byakuya nodded. “Scatter, Senbonzakura.” He concentrated and split the attack six ways. “Sing, Ookami.” The blades were carried with even more force, riding the sonic attack of the wolf’s howl and eliminating all six targets. Inari shot Byakuya a faint smile, which he returned before they started to repeat the process while Ookami and Ginrei took care of the ones not targeted. “Inari-sama, cero!” Ookami called. “Multiple.” “Shield, Ookami,” Inari said. Almost before she got the words out, she found herself on the ground with Byakuya crouched over her. It took a few moments to register what he was doing. She smiled a little, thinking it was sweet that he was trying to protect her. She glanced to the side and felt something similar to a dome of sound close around them, shielding everyone inside from the blast of the cero. She breathed a sigh of relief as the other three Pack members finished off the last of the Menos. Ookami let the dome drop and was soon kneeling to check on her master. “Inari-sama, you’re injured,” Ookami said. “I’d noticed that,” Inari said. “You’re in sleeping clothes as well,” Byakuya said, sounding faintly amused as he shifted so he wasn’t lying on her anymore. “So are you,” Inari pointed out. “That tends to happen when one is attacked by Menos at three in the morning,” Byakuya said. Inari laughed and tilted her head back at hearing Kali’s very distinct walk toward her. “Hey, Alpha, if you’re finished rolling around on the ground with the pretty boy, we should get the fires put out here and then go see what kind of damage there is at the palace,” Kali said. Inari sighed. “Never let it be said that I don’t enjoy my job some days,” she said, grinning up at Byakuya before turning her attention to his grandfather. “It’s good to see you again, Ginrei.” The older man bowed to her. “You as well, Inari-hime.” “Gods, Ginrei, you’ve known me since I was five, can you please stop calling me that?” Inari grumbled, rolling to her feet. “It is proper and respectful as you are our former Sovereign and our current Sovereign’s sister,” Ginrei pointed out. He glanced from her to his grandson before folding his hands behind his back, almost as if waiting for something. Inari’s eyes narrowed as did Byakuya’s. “You had something to do with this,” Inari said. Ginrei shrugged. “Come to tea day after tomorrow and I’ll answer any questions you might have. You as well, Byakuya.” “Of course, Grandfather,” Byakuya said, now more certain than ever his grandfather had spearheaded the effort to get he and Inari together.
