Chapter 10
Isshin sat heavy and panted with genuine exhaustion. They had been running almost nonstop the last three days. It was apparent that their plan had not worked. Chad must have given them away for a good reason, because he knew torture would not have broken that young man one inch. He looked over and watched his two daughters lean against each other for support as they took the reprieve to rest up. His eyes softened. He didn't want them to be forced to live this kind of life, but it was all he could do. Neither one of them ever complained or showed fear. It made him proud to have such strong willed children.
Urahara was using a unique kido spell that would hide them long enough for a break. Isshin watched him, his friend plopping down onto the sand with just as much weariness as the rest of them when he was through. None of them spoke as they gasped and drank water from canteens. The only other sound was the harsh wind that blew across the land. He hated the barren landscape. He hated the heat of the days and the chill of the nights. He hated that Aizen had his son. So much hate to have was never good, especially when you kept it bottled up so others wouldn't see.
"I think it's time for us to go underground," Urahara panted.
"Are you crazy?"
"What other option do we have?"
Dammit. Isshin grimaced. The only time they dared to venture below was for water and small animals they caught for food. Not the tastiest things, but they weren't poisonous and it kept them going. Other dangers did exist there though. An endless bounty of hollows and menos.
"Waiting, Isshin. Any other ideas?"
"No, unfortunately."
"I can keep using the kido to hide our presence up here, but it will only work for so long."
"Out of the frying pan and into the fire," Isshin said, rubbing his eyes.
"In a nutshell."
"It's okay, Dad. We'll go where we have to," Karin said. "Maybe we'll come up with a plan to get Ichigo and the others out of there while we're vegging underground."
"I agree," Yuzu said in a way that sounded bright and certain of their ability to do so.
Isshin chuckled. "Hell, maybe we can at that." He smiled soft to his two teenage daughters with their shaggy, wind blown hair, and dirt smeared faces. They were now only a year younger than Ichigo was when he was awoken to his shinigami power. The time had passed slowly and quickly at the same time.
"Sounds like a plan then, kids," Urahara said. "And the sooner the better. These damn arrancar surprisingly have better brain function than the hollows and menos. They'll catch up eventually if we don't drop below."
Isshin snorted. "Surprised the arrancar can think, Urahara?"
"No, just annoyed they can," he said.
"Dad, why did Aizen keep our brother?" Yuzu asked for the first time.
In fact, neither one of his children had asked since this hell began. It was a touchy subject that he had avoided for a reason. They didn't need to hear what he thought was going on. He wasn't there when Kon died inside a gigai that looked like him, so he hadn't heard any parting words. He had hated to even allow him to go out in his place, but after they had witnessed Captain Commander getting taken down, it was time to cut their losses and run. Dammit, he had hated every second of it. Shinigami didn't run, but in the end, they had no other option. For the sake of his daughter's lives he had agreed to all of this.
"I'm not sure, Yuzu. Maybe he saw something in Ichigo he wanted for himself. The man thrives on power."
"The man is a asshole," Karin said, wiping a hand over her sweat covered face.
"Karin!" Yuzu gasped, looking at her sister with big eyes.
Isshin laughed. "Yuzu, I have to agree with your sister one hundred percent."
"I'm with that too." Urahara gave a little wave. "I'm still pissed the sicko took my hat. I loved that hat." He sighed dramatically.
Yuzu giggled. "You're funny, Uncle Urahara."
"I try." He smiled soft to her.
Isshin watched the three talking. The girls had taken to calling Urahara, Uncle. He had no problem with that. Their small group was the only family they had left. He looked off into the distance seeing nothing but sand and sky, wondering about his son once again. He felt a shifting movement against his chest and looked down as Nel's little head popped out of his robes. She yawned and rubbed her eyes.
"Oh, we not running anymore," she stated and yawned again. "I thought the shakies had stopped."
"Sorry, Nel. We needed a rest. Have a nice sleep?"
"Yep." She nodded and plopped out onto the sand to walk over to the girls.
"Hey, sis," Karin said, picking her up to sit on her lap.
"Drink some water, Nel. We're moving again soon." He smiled when she did as she was told. He had taken her in as a daughter as soon as he heard all she had done for his son. The female arrancar was a treasure for their group. She had healed many wounds, and even fought when she transformed into her true self. Unfortunately, that part was always random, but as Urahara noted, it was happening more often. Even Nel had mentioned it last time she was full grown.
"We gonna go save Itsygo and everyone soon?"
"We're gonna do our best, Nel."
"Isshin, we got to move. Can you feel the reiatsu?"
"Yeah." His stomach sunk.
"I feels it," Nel said.
They ran.

"Am I going to have to go out myself to catch strays running through my land?" Aizen asked, sitting on his throne, chin resting on his hand.
Gin chuckled. "Send me. I bet I could lead the arrancar rats to the cheese."
Aizen thought about it a moment. "No, I'll send a few espada first. You're my right hand. I need you here for now."
"As you wish."
"How is Chad liking his new arrangements?"
"Like most. He went to work, because he knew better than to fight. He had a few short moments of hope when he saw some of his shinigami friends, but when he saw how broken their spirits were..well.." He smirked.
"Good."
"Ichigo knows nothing of this?" Gin asked.
"No, Orihime has been a good girl and hasn't spoken a word like I ordered."
"Always can rely on her behaving." He looked at Aizen. "Can I still have her as you promised?"
"In time. Not until I know Ichigo will not care anymore. That may still be a long way off. Will you be able to stand the wait?"
"I have eternity. I can wait."
Aizen stood. "Well, as much as I detest it, I will have to be away from my lover tonight. I'll gather a few of our strongest espada to venture out and find our little problems. At least half of Hueco Mundo has been covered, and they're on the run. There was a rumor that Ichigo's sisters were also spotted. I want to make sure this is no mistake."
"Ah, Mr. Chad may have managed to try keeping a secret, huh?"
"That's what I'm going to find out. I could try asking him again, but I'm done with that."
"Yes, I think you've squeezed that rag dry," Gin said.
"To the point of scorching," Aizen said and left Gin laughing in his wake.
All is well. Aizen walked though the halls of his palace feeling a sense of pride. Everything was going along smoothly. Ichigo was his almost his completely now. The last few survivors that roamed free were going to be taken down soon enough. His plans to move on to other worlds was near. Nothing could stop this high. Nothing at all.

Loly didn't trust Grimmjow. Not one bit. She never followed him to see what he got up to. He was much too powerful not to notice if someone was on his tail. That didn't change the fact that she knew he was up to something naughty, and that sometime soon she would have to figure out what it was. She also hated the fact that he seemed to protect that little bitch Orihime. Faithful to Aizen always, that was the only flaw she saw in her lord. She couldn't understand why she was being kept alive. Of course, it could be because she healed that shinigami whore he kept. Kurosaki. That even angered her. He had been a hot fuck, but why keep him?
She walked along the halls as she contemplated it all. She was content enough with her place here, but she wasn't entirely happy. They had won as Aizen had said they would, and that was something to be proud of. She just hoped that maybe after time Aizen would tire of his whore and want to move on. She would be completely willing to take Kurosaki's place in a heartbeat. The shinigami was weak and pathetic. She herself had grown in power since the war. It was a shame Aizen had not noticed, even when she went to extreme lengths to show him just how strong she could be when training.
Loly walked around a corner, but backed quickly around to hide when she saw Grimmjow. She peeked back around to watch his back as he strode down the hallway. She quickly hid her reiatsu before he could notice her there. Again she was hit with the knowledge that he was up to something. She just knew it in her gut. She nibbled her lip and made the decision before she could change her mind and followed quietly as he rounded the corner. The time for cowering was over sooner than she expected. If he was against Aizen in any way, she would find out and tell him. Maybe then Aizen would recognize her power for what it truly was.
She took hurried, but silent steps as she went, checking cautiously around each corner before she followed again. He wasn't in a hurry as he walked along the deserted hallways of Las Noches. After a while, it just seemed like he was walking with no real destination, but when he finally stopped, it was to talk to one of his underlings. The arrancar was not a favorite of hers. It was probably because he was part of Grimmjow's group, and he too guarded Orihime when Grimmjow wasn't around. Midori, with his green hair and soft spoken personality. It made her sick that such a weakling had been brought into their fold. Of course, that had all been thanks to Grimmjow for finding the little shit and introducing him as a candidate to replace one of the lost arrancar from the war.
Loly couldn't hear what was being said, but Midori nodded and wandered off down another hallway. She was torn on who she should follow now. She had only seconds to decide, and went with Grimmjow. Midori was probably off to babysit the bitch again anyway. She eased along, making sure that Grimmjow was still unaware of her. She was becoming more confident in her stealth as she watched and followed his unknowing ass. He took a few more turns and headed for one of the exits. Now she was pissed. It would be harder to follow out in the open, but she would risk it. She could always make something up if he caught her. Not like he could do anything to her. Aizen wouldn't allow it.
Loly waited a few moments before she opened the door he went through, only cracking it enough to see where he was. He was heading around the palace at a leisurely pace. She waited until he was out of sight to slip out the door. She kept up the same strategy of peeking around corners before following. It was working well enough to her advantage. When he neared closer to where she knew Kurosaki's room was, she became even more suspicious of his motives. She thought it might just be coincidence until he stopped right under the window and leaped up to it, disappearing inside the room.
"Oh, you are being naughty, Grimmjow," she mumbled as her steps quickened to reach the wall. She waited with impatience, but knew she should to be sure not to be spotted. She looked around, then jumped with the same amount of agility, gripping the window's edge. She looked down to a scene of passion, the two men kissing like lovers reunited. Caught you. She smirked, eyes cold with triumph. Oh, when she told Aizen about this, he'd kill them both. All the better for her. Then maybe he'd have no use for the bitch anymore either. She watched a few moments more before she gracefully let herself fall back down to earth, eyes up at the window, smirking.
When she turned, she became aware of the pain before the one causing it. She met Midori's eyes, her mouth gaping as he twisted his bade around her stomach, wrenching it with enormous strength to slice through her body, the action nearly cutting her in two. Bright blood sprayed over the sand, and across Midori's face. The last thing she saw was the bastard smile soft before he raised the blade and cut her head off clean off her neck.
Grimmjow chuckled as he felt her reiatsu get extinguished like a candle, Ichigo close against his body. His lover smirked as he felt the same sensation that signaled her ending life. One insignificant death, but it was a start.
