Soul Infection versus Tissue Infection. Since science generally agrees that the soul resides in the human brain, a human zombie can be killed when the brain tissue is destroyed and the infected soul freed. Not so with a soul zombie. There is no known cure to date. 105 years ago in the Seireitei, a gigai prototype was developed with the ability to cause shinigami powers to deplete instead of replenish when worn. You may know of it, as it was more recently duplicated and used for a young female soul reaper who was an unwitting accomplice in concealing and safeguarding the infamous Hōgyoku. Despite that, the test prototype was shelved in Division 12, its creator and head of the Research and Development Institute not envisioning an immediate use for it at the time. It was unfortunately mislabelled by his unenthusiastic assistant as deletion gigai instead of depletion gigai. Shortly afterward, the 12th division’s lieutenant suffered a life-altering incident and she and her Captain were forced to flee the Seireitei. Being the only two who knew of its true purpose, the specialized gigai was ignored and forgotten over the ensuing years. Not too long ago, it was discovered by some unknown underling and brought to the attention of Akon, the 3rd seat of Div. 12. He checked it over and determined it fit for use, not elimination as the word deletion implied. As luck would have it, said underling was assigned the very same gigai on a research trip to the living world. He found himself growing tired and sluggish while wearing it during the field tests. When he returned with the crew to leave for the Soul Society, he couldn’t release from his gigai due to his extremely low Reiryoku, and was forced to stay behind until such time as a solution was found. Stranded in the human world, he was unhappy, but relatively safe as human diseases didn’t affect him at first. Within a short time, he became so weakened that one virulent strain of an exceptionally nasty virus was finally able to take hold, infecting him. Being that it was from a human body, it unexpectedly mutated in the gigai and was able to also infect his soul. This type of soul infection prevents the soul’s release from the body upon death, allowing the corpse to reanimate. This was what human’s refer to as zombification. The poor soul reaper involuntarily became patient zero of a world-wide contagion. His infection could not be cured and he died, only to rise up and bite the attendant who had taken his body to the morgue for a coroner's inquest. He mindlessly roamed the city, biting and infecting the humans he encountered. He was no longer aware of his previous life, hunger for flesh his only stimulant. The spread of the untreatable plague was comparatively slow, given that the zombies were listless and easily out maneuvered, until the discovery of the “cure”. The humans realized that destruction of the zombie brain would effectively stop the invincible army of the undead. The word got out and the population breathed a collective sigh of relief that they could take back their carefree lives again. How were they to know that the brain was the receptacle of the soul, and that when it was rendered unusable, the infected soul was freed? The resultant horde of soul zombies were able to attack and infect the humans at a much faster rate than before, being that most humans couldn’t detect them approaching. Global annihilation of the human species was inevitable. Soul Society was triggered into responding to the crisis in force. The Shinigami were deployed in record numbers to combat the soul zombies, leaving a skeleton unit to preside over the Gotei 13. Unlike the pluses who would eventually become hollows if not sent to soul society, the soul zombies chain of fate did not corrode. Not only didn’t they transform into hollows, they didn’t respond to hollow cleansing, either. The soul reapers resorted to performing Konsō while the zombie was restrained by two others. It seemed to work. The offending soul disintegrated into a receding light. The solution was quickly disseminated throughout the ranks and all zombies, human and soul, were dispatched to the Soul Society. The shinigami cheered their victory, small as it was, now that just a few thousand humans were left to populate the living world. The soul reapers were all ordered to return to the Seireitei. As the first group emerged from the Senkaimon, they were beset upon by legions of soul zombies that had been transported to Soul Society. Said zombies had succeeded in infecting the entirety of the Rukongai, having no defence against the onslaught. The sad scene played out as wave upon wave of shinigami were bitten when they were forced through the dimensional gateway into the Seireitei like cattle being herded through the chute onto the killing floor.
“And that, my friends, is how Soul Society can be transformed into a Zombie Apocalypse. Now, do you still think it’s impossible?” Kisuke finished smugly while observing the impact his tale of terror had on the pale faces of his three companions. Ichigo let forth a satisfying shiver at the thought and grinned, “That was an awesome horror story, Kisuke. I figured it would be a boring Halloween, hanging out with soul reapers, as ironic as that sounds. You guys don’t do holiday high jinx, usually. I’m really glad we decided to do this, now. I could almost see that situation really happening, since it was Genius Kisuke who developed the real prototype gigai.” Looks at Renji, “I’m sure glad I have a human body and not a gigai” he sniggered. “Go to Hell, carrot-top, the humans got infected too!” He got up and retrieved a full jug of sake, from which he took a large mouthful. “Now I gotta get stinkin’ drunk so I won’t have nightmares tonight, thank you Rukia for suggesting ghost stories!” He grouched. She stood up and punched Renji in the gut causing him to double over and cough the remaining liquid from his mouth. “Hey, stupid, I’m the one who was living in that gigai for months!” She turned her ire on Kisuke. “I could kill you, Urahara, for almost turning me into a zombie!” She wound up for an expertly aimed kick at Kisuke’s balls when Ichigo pulled his lover out of harms way. “Don’t lay a finger, or foot, on him, Rukia. I need him in good working condition tonight!” Kisuke pulled his fan over his face to hide his amusement. She would never have gotten close but he liked it when Ichigo broadcast their relationship to his friends. He was usually much more reserved and private, having been raised in the human world of morality. Put a few drinks in him and it was a whole other story. “Hold up there, little spitfire. It’s only a silly, made up story. You would never have become a zombie.” Kisuke reassured the black haired dynamo. He pushed himself to his feet and held out a hand for his lover. “If that’s the last of the storytelling, I think I’ll take Ichigo up on his offer. C’mon Ichi, let’s go test out my working condition!” he leered in a low, playful manner. The two sweethearts scampered off to Kisuke’s room, leaving an apprehensive Renji and skeptical Rukia to put the Halloween demons to rest.
