Ichigo strokes his soft red hair back from his forehead as he lies stretched out on his back in bed. The battle between the worlds was over and he was free of the burdens to save them, but the weight on his chest didn’t seem to go away.
He slid his hand down his cheek to his chin and along his jawline. His skin was smooth and warm, a shiver passed through his body. He was now 18 years old, and although he was always popular with the ladies, he never did have a real girlfriend. Orihimi loved him, he could tell but although he always wanted to protect her and be there for her, he never did see her as more than a precious friend. The passion he felt for her was nothing more than what he felt for his younger sisters. “What happened to the Espada, I wonder?” The question had left his lips before he had realised it. His eyes opened wide as he thought about that question. He never felt more alive than when he was fighting with them. His skin was on fire and his mind was so focused. His hand was playing on his chest, making a perfect circle right below his neck. He stopped his fingers and focused on the location. It is exactly where Ulquiorra had stabbed him through with his hand. Ichigo shudders and sits up, swinging his feet off the edge of the bed to sit firmly on the floor. He rests his elbows on his knees and hunches over into his hands heaving a huge sigh. Tears roll down his cheek. ‘Why did he have to fight so hard against people? Why had Ulquiorra not realised sooner what the heart was? ‘ His thoughts twirled around the days of their many fights. He had won, but the feeling of loss seemed stronger than ever. He stood up and carefully grabbed his clothing out from the closet. It was strangely quiet not having Rukia sleeping and hiding out in his room. Not to mention Kon was spending more and more time with Mister Urahara. If anyone would know about the Espada it would be him, Kisuke Urahara. Just as he finished buttoning his jeans there is a soft knock on his door. “Onii-chan, are you coming for breakfast? …” The soft voice of his sister Yuzu calls out to him. “Yah… I’ll be down in a sec.” He says back to her before she can add anything. “ummm … okay onii-chan.” Her voice cracked a little despite being 14 she stilled worried way too much for him since he disappeared on her so many times in the past few years. There had been so much trouble that he hadn’t even noticed how badly he had hurt her. Before she could leave from the hall he sprung forward and opened the door. “Yuzu!” He hadn’t meant to yell it quite as loud as he did. Her eyes were wide and she turned towards him. She was wearing a cute yellow dress under a crisp white apron, a spoon in her left hand. “Onii-chan?” Her voice was questioning. Ichigo didn’t respond instead he walked up to her and wrapped his hands in a firm hug around her. “I am sorry I hurt you my sweet, sweet sister. I swear I am okay now. I will never leave you again, not like I did before. I will be the big brother you want me to be.” His voice was soft and soothing. “I love you Onii-chan.” Yuzu whispered before hugging him back. They separate from each other and walk to the dining room. Karin is already sitting at the table, a bowl in her left hand and her chopsticks in her right hand poised over it. “ ‘Morning Ichigo-chan.” She said over her bites of food. “Good morning Karin.” He says before ruffling her hair. She glares up at him but a small smile creases her lips. “I am sorry what I put you through, thank you for being there for Yuzu.” He says giving her a hug from behind the chair, his arms tucked up under her chest and his chin resting on her shoulder. “Whatever, I did what any sister would do.” She said as strongly as she could, but you could tell that she was happy to have her brother back. Ichigo lets go of her and the moment he takes a step back a loud yell can be heard. “ICHHHHHIIIIIGOOOOOOOO!!!!!” Without flinching Ichigo’s fist comes up to hit his charging father square in the face. The two of them grapple for a few moments before Ichigo is the clear winner of the two. As soon as that happens, the Isshin dashes to an oversized portrait of his late wife. “Mother! Oh Mother! Why have you cursed me with such an insolent boy? Thank you for bringing him back to us but mother can’t you make him nicer?” The three siblings roll their eyes at their father and proceed to eat their food. Something will never change. “I will be home later tonight. You don’t have to make supper for me okay?” Ichigo said looking to his blond haired sister. “Okay…” Yuzu pauses as she looks at her plate. “Where are you going Onii-chan?” “I am going to go see some of my friends. It has been over a year! Don’t worry, I promise I will be back for bed, I won’t stay out all night.” Ichigo said with a smile. Yuzu visibly relaxed. “Okay Onii-chan. I hope you have fun.” She smiled back but Karin only scowled a clear sign that she was warning him not to hurt their delicate sister or her again. Ichigo winks at her before bringing his dishes to the sink and dashing out the door with a wave. ‘Yah, Mr. Urahara must know what is going on in the Soul Society and in Hueco Mundo.’ Ichigo subconsciously started walking faster as he thought about Hueco Mundo and the Espada. He hoped they had figured out what happened to them after the battles. He refused to accept that they had died. They were already dead, how can you die twice. As soon as he got to the ‘candy’ shop, he knocked as loudly as he could. “Mr. Urahara! Mr. Urahara are you there?” It seemed strangely quiet but it isn’t like they left the shop all that often. “Mr. Tsukabishi? Yoruichi-san? Ururu, Jinta? Where are you guys?” His voice is loud and he is pounding on the door. Why would they not be here today of all days when he wants to see them. Suddenly the door slides open, but no one is visible… “What the hell?” Ichigo looks around, his eyes finally moving down to ankle height. “Oh, Kon! Where are the others?” Ichigo says dropping down to his knees. “Hmmmph! Nice to see you too Ichigo!” Kon says crossing his arms over his teddy bear chest. He moves out of the way of the door and points at the trap door at the end of the hall. “They are all down there.” He grunts out. “Thanks Kon!” Ichigo shouts out jumping to his feet and over the small stuffed teddy before racing for the secret room. ‘What are they doing in there I wonder? Could it be they were expecting me?’ He doesn’t think he ever ran faster in his life, he was there in a matter of moments. As expected Urahara had his white and green stripped hat and black trench like coat on. Tsukabishi was wearing his apron even though he wasn’t cooking or cleaning. The kids were squabbling amongst themselves; Jinta pressing his knuckles into the side of Ururu’s head. Yoruichi was in her cat form and casually licking her paws under the artificial sun. “Hello Ichigo.” Urahara’s voice was smooth and deep, he sounded very serious. “What can we do for you today?” Ichigo suddenly felt very ridiculous, what would he ask exactly of them, ‘Hey yah can you tell me if the enemy are alive in Hueco Mundo?’ They would likely laugh at him and tell him the crisis is over and that there is no one left to fight. He fidgets in place nudging the toes of his shoes into the sandy ground. “Ummm well, yah I was going to ask you…” He takes a deep steadying breath. “What exactly happens to the people of Soul Society and Hueco Mundo when they…. Ummm you know die again?” Kisuke tilts his head to the side slightly while looking Ichigo up and down. Ichigo’s face starts turning pink under the deep gaze. Mr. Urahara waves his hands at everyone in the downstairs training hall. “Give us a moment would you? Don’t come down no matter what you hear. You got that?” His voice went even deeper in tone as his eyes narrowed on the kids specifically. “You two, go out and play somewhere away from the shop.” Everyone stood and looked confused for a moment before Tsukabishi recovered from his slight shock and ushered everyone out, closing the trap door behind them. “So Ichigo, why do you want to know about the condition of the Espada.” Urahara said lightheartedly. Ichigo sputtered. “What!? No umm I don’t want to know how they are. Not at all… umm I was just curious how things work on the other side you know. Ummm because of how many people I had to fight.” His voice was not convincing and his now fully flushed face was enough to give away any hopes of hiding his embarrassment. “Oh, that is a shame you don’t want to know. I had researched it and everything!” Urahara said with a knowing laugh. “Too bad it will go to waste now.” He added a dramatic sigh before collapsing into a crouching position on the ground with his hands covering his face. “What good is a scientist who looks up information no one wants!” Ichigo stared at him with wide eyes. “Nooo, no, you are not useless! Tell me!” He said it way to enthusiastically for his taste but he couldn’t help it. His ruse was up anyway. Urahara stood up just as quickly as he had collapsed. “See that wasn’t so hard.” He said with a wink. He walked over to Ichigo and placed a hand on his shoulder. “Okay so you want to know about the Espada. Well take a seat and I will tell you what happens.” Urahara clears his throat and the two of them sit together on one of the many rock formations. “Normally when you die in one of the spirit worlds, you are gone for good.” Ichigo’s shoulders sank. Of course that would make sense. How could a spirit come back to life after being dead again… what would be left to come back? “You see how it works in that world is that when you perish your spirit particles go back into the world, feeding it creating it, making space for new souls.” Ichigo was only half listening now, he had killed the people who brought out his fire, pulling it to the surface and making him want to live. “People often forget that even in Soul Society or in your case Hueco Mundo, there will always be an inevitable end. I cannot tell you if the spirit particles within these realms are alive, many studies have been made to see if perhaps consciousness remains in our structures, but honestly most people don’t want to think that way because what happens when those structures are destroyed? Does that mean that the souls are moved again or are they then dead for good? It is so much easier to simply assume that once the physical and not as physical spiritual forms are gone then that person is gone for good.” “Thanks Mr. Urahara.” Ichigo’s voice was monotone. He went to stand up but was suddenly pushed back down onto the rocks. “Now hold up there! I wasn’t finished. Boy you are too impatient for this old scientist.” Kisuke seemed frustrated he pulled his hat off his head and ruffled his own hair before throwing the hat back on. Ichigo watched his every move with guarded eyes. When Kisuke seemed to not be saying anything Ichigo became frustrated. “Well then! What is it!?” His voice rose despite himself. Kisuke sighed deeply, he looked tired. “You know I care for you boy. I don’t go out of my way for just anyone so appreciate this because you will have people from Soul Society on both our asses for nothing if you don’t.” He stood up and walked over to a far end of the training room. Ichigo was too scared to move from his seat. Never before had mere words cripple him so. His eyes widened as he saw Mr. Urahara coming back with a couple people behind him. The forms were familiar and their strides were unmistakable. Ichigo jumped to his feet but didn’t move from the spot he was left. It was too good to be true. There was no way that they could be alive. He had saw them die he had watched their spirit particles leave their body. The closer they got the more his heart drummed in his ears. He was certain that the keen ears of the Espada would hear it but there was nothing he could do. Mr. Urahara was walking with Grimmjow, Coyote Stark, Ulquiorra, and of course the annoying little pipsqueak Lilinette. He couldn’t stop staring at them. ‘Why were they all there?’ His mouth hung open slightly. When the five had reached him, he couldn’t even begin to form any words. Ulquiorra, as gracefully as ever, lifted his right hand and nudged Ichigo’s chin. That was enough to snap Ichigo out of his trance like state. “How?” Was the only word that left his lips. “It is complicated to explain, but you see I was watching your battles. These ones seemed to have learned from it and had changed in the process. That is why they are here. How I brought them back is well something that you won’t understand. All I can say that might help you understand is, remember how we got your powers back by using the modified soul technology? Well I worked with that same technology and developed some new techniques for gathering particles and the residue of people.” Ichigo had stopped listening. The spot on his chin burned from where Ulquiorra had touched it. He never realised how sad Ulquiorra’s green eyes looked with the streak of black running down from them. Nor had he noticed how alluring they were. Every part of his body tingled at the thought of sparring against Grimmjow but the sensation he felt towards Ulquiorra was different. He didn’t want to fight him, but yet his body tingled nonetheless. His face was turning pink, he felt very light headed all of a sudden. “He’s gonna fall over Stark, you watching him, the idiot’s gonna fall.” It was the last thing Ichigo heard before his vision went white and his ears started buzzing. ‘Damn that annoying Lilinette, why did I have to hear voice her last?’ He did however feel strong arms catch him before he hit the ground. ‘That’s good at least.’ And he was out. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
