“There’s too many injured, were not going to be able to save them all captain.” A male medic Shinigami told his commanding officer, Retsu Unohana. The battle between the Espada and the Shinigami had been raging for only minutes and hundreds had been injured or killed instantly as the fighting continued assiduously. The people on the outskirts had suffered even more with no way to defend themselves and the lack of proper medic attention.
“Then save who you can.” Unohana hated the way that sounded as she continued to heal a young girl in front of her with a massive chest wound.
“Will this ever end?”
Retsu thought darkly to herself as the pain and misery all around her was almost too revolting, too unbearable for any normal person to handle. Her senses suddenly went off as the older woman walked around the table and looked out a 4th barracks window.
“It’s her…”
To Retsu horror, she saw her vice-captain Isane who was hurt at the gate.
“Captain….”
Blood dripped from multiple wounds as she drug her feet and sword across the threshold of 4th squad.
“Captain….”
Her gray eyes searched in wanderlust of her dear commander.
“Captain….”
Isane told herself repeatedly as she stood beaten and bloody in the middle of the courtyard. The older woman’s heart dropped in her chest as she saw the state her vice-captain was worst then she thought.
“Nisane!”
“Please take over for me.” The 4th captain ordered another medic to take her place as she hurried out of the room. Outside explosions and screams echoed everywhere as the Espada and hoards of hollows continued to wreak havoc on the soul society and the last line of defense of Karakura town. Retsu opened the front doors to the 4th quarters as Isane smiled a bloody smile.
“Retsu…”
She was just happy to see her captain, even with how bad she was hurt, she only wanted to see Retsu one more time.
“Captain…” The tall grey-haired girl whispered softly with a smile as something flashed behind her.
“ISANE!” Retsu yelled uncharacteristically as the tip of a blade suddenly appeared out of the tall, gray-haired girl’s chest. Blood exploded from the vice-captain’s chest as a ragged gasp escaped her mouth. The tall girl was forced up onto the balls of her feet as the blade slowly torn upwards. When it came to a stop, she looked down in shock and surprise as she touched the end of the bloody sword with a trembling finger. Her vision started to blur as she looked back up at her captain and reached out for her.
“Retsu… -sama…” The 4th Captain saw a figure slowly emerge from behind Isane as she paused. A tall, blonde-haired woman rose up, with a pair of piercing green eyes as the bridge of a nose was next. The rest of her face was covered by an extended collar joined to a short white jacket. The figure made full height as Isane slid off the blade and fell to the ground.
“Are you her captain?” The female Espada asked as she swung the blood off her blade. The captain burst into the courtyard instantly, blades crashing as Retsu forced the other woman back and away from Isane’s body.
“Get away from her.” Retsu said coldly as she glared hatefully at the Espada. Halibel held her ground a few feet away as she held her sword in front of herself.
“I didn’t think she could move that fast, I’ve underestimated her.”
Halibel knew better then to take people for granted, but the woman’s reaction to her killing her lieutenant was different, it was unexpected… and strong.
“Why would she care about what happens to one of her subordinates?”
Halibel found herself at odds with what she was trying to understand to what she knew. If one of her fracción died would she care? Would anyone? Retsu’s lower lip quivered as she knelt down next to the dying girl and cradled her in her arms.
“I should have been m-more careful C-Captain.” Isane tried to frown as she couldn’t help but smile at the older woman.
“Isane…” Grief washed over the woman as she knew the grey-haired girl didn’t have much time left.
“I-I’m just glad I got to see you one more time... Retsu-sama…” Isane eyes slowly closed as she went limp in Retsu’s arms.
“Isane…”
Tia Halibel raised her eyes high over her massive collar as she glared at the older woman below her. Retsu Unohana looked up at an Espada lord, the most dangerous of hollows to walk any surface.
“She’s strong, very strong.”
Unohana eyes drifted over Halibel’s toned frame as she steadied her feet. Halibel struck first as the older woman's right forearm blocked the hollow’s hammering fist with ease.
“You strike me out of pity for my age?” Unohana stepped back as Halibel answered with a ferociously roundhouse. Retsu folded her hands in and pushed out a set of interlocked fingers.
“77.” Halibel flash-stepped out of the way as the ground flattened where she had just stood. Unohana quick stepped Isane’s lifeless body away.
“I’m sorry Isane…”
“I’ve heard the highest masters of kido don’t chant.” Halibel slid sideways as her green eyes zeroed in.
“You’re pretty smart for a hollow, still you lack in areas that make many stronger then you.” Unohana replied sharply as she glared sternly at the self-absorbed hollow lord. The Fourth captain smiled violently as she drew her Zanpakutoo.
“She has the edge physically, but my bankai is the ace here.”
“We’ll see about that.” Halibel was thankful for her collar as she gritted her teeth tightly.
“Why is she smiling? Is there some trick up her sleeve?”
“What’s your name hollow?” Unohana called out as she caught Halibel off balance mentally. Halibel drew her short Zanpakutoo and gripped her collar.
“Tia, Tia Halibel, the 3rd Espada.” The blonde mused, lifting her tight jacket to show her number as she asked the same. “...And you?”
"Retsu, Unohana, Captain of squad 4.” The dark-haired woman nodded a bit as she did something unusual.
“That’s quite the outfit you got there.” She looked back up as Halibel knew by her tone it was an insult.
“Your mockery ends now, CERO!” Halibel yanked down the high collar shadowing her mouth as a yellow cero erupted from it.
“47!” Unohana crossed her fingers from both hands and reflected the jade flare easily, destroying a few buildings off in the distance.
“You are going to be difficult to kill with that kido of yours soul-reaper.” Halibel bowed a little in admiration as she continued her attack. Both women assaulted each other unremittingly as Halibel drew first blood. Unohana looked at her forearm with a shrug as blood poured from it.
“Just a flesh wound.”
Unohana lit up her hand as she started to heal the abrasion.
“Oh, no you don’t!” Halibel was on top of the healer instantly as she swung her weapon wildly. Unohana flashed stepped into the air as the blonde was right on top her.
“I’ll cut it off this time!” Halibel round-housed her foot over her head and came down solidly on Unohana’s shoulder. The older woman spiraled ferociously to the ground as she braced for a hard landing. With a loud crash the 4th captain smashed into the ground, causing a large crater to form in the middle of the street. Unohana shook off the landing slowly as she looked up to see the vasto lord heading straight for her, her short sword leading the way.
“Die soul-reaper!” Halibel struck the ground as dusk and debris exploded everywhere. Silence fell as a wicked shriek roared from the middle of the crater. The blonde screamed as she missed killing Unohana who had just missed the tip of the hollows sword by rolling out of the way at the last second and exposed the opening to the hollow’s right side.
“CERO!” Halibel screeched as another blast flashed from her mouth. Still shaking off the last hit Unohana managed to get her sword up to block the murderous attack as the blast threw the captain back, smashing her into a ruined building.
“Unohana-sama, I won’t be able to keep this up much longer, I’m not really an offensive weapon... unless you, please Retsu don’t.” Her Zanpakutoo said softly.
“Isane is dead my promise is void, how are “they” doing?” The older woman asked strictly as her weapon sighed.
“Those girls aren’t going to make it…” Her Zanpakutoo said grimly.
“Send them… she won’t be long.” Unohana assured as she tried to heal herself again.
“If she doesn’t kill me first that is.”
“UNOHANA-SAMA!!!” Her Zanpakutoo screamed as Unohana looked up to see a sondio outline moving straight for her screaming malevolently.
“SOUL-REAPER!!!” Halibel appeared out of her flash step, her left hand pointing her deadly Zanpakutoo at the captain’s heart as Unohana closed her eyes and she whispered.
“Ban.. kai…”
Halibel missed again and quickly cleared the debris as blood started to stream down from the older woman’s face.
“What is that?” The blood reached the edge of Unohana’s chin as it dripped on to her robe and spread across it rapidly. The woman continued to cry with a straight face as she looked back at her sweet “little” Isane then back at her killer.“I’m sorry, but I must end your life now.” Retsu apologized sternly as she looked up and opened her eyes. Her haori was swimming with blood now as Retsu lifted a finger and pointed it at the Espada.
“What are you doing now?” Attention was instant as Halibel found something different about the woman, something menacing and cold just waiting to commence untold violence. Halibel held her ground, glaring at the older woman’s emotionless face as red arms and hands started to form all over the captain’s coat.
“What the…”
“Dance of bloody tears.” Abruptly the hands darted right for the Espada as she jumped into the air to evade. The blonde turned and twisted gracefully in the air as the murderous hands followed her every move.
“You’re only going to make it more painful for yourself.” Retsu said quietly as the number of arms continued to grow with their attacks. Halibel dodged and sliced through what seemed like hundreds of arms as they simply grew back and hawked her endlessly. Halibel began using her water technique to ward off some of the assaulting limbs as it started to come from all angles.
“There’s too many.”
Halibel tried to flip backwards as one of the hands scraped her arm. The blonde felt it as it barely fazed her and landed on the ground. The dangerous arms suddenly recessed for a moment as they circled their master, waiting for her very whim to kill.
“That’s some bankai you have there.” Halibel said shortly as she gripped her sword tightly as she began to consider her options.
“There’s no point in attacking the arms, I have to go straight for the kill.”
Halibel focused seriously on the captain, looking for a weakness in her bankai. The woman stood calmly, like nothing was wrong as Halibel gritted her teeth.
“You’re running out of time.” Retsu called out as Halibel just looked at her and pointed her sword.
“You barely scratched me, and it will take more than a little cut to…” Out of the blue her sword dropped from her hand as her eyes went wide.
“My arm…?”
Rarely surprised, Halibel tried to pull her arm back, but it failed to response.
“How…? When…?”
“I told you were running out of time and now it’s too late.” The 4th captain said somberly as she held her finger pointed at the hollow.
“This is’in happening!”
Halibel’s hollowed jaw gritted tightly as her anger started to take over. A feeling she kept locked away inside her since joining Azien’s army. Retsu slowly closed her fist as Halibel’s frozen limb exploded at the elbow from her body. The blonde gritted her teeth as she continued to stare at the captain with her extreme green eyes.
“You fucking bitch…” Halibel whispered wickedly out of character as she leaned over and picked up her sword. It made no difference really, the blonde was ambidextrous and now more determined to gut this woman and bath in her blood. Retsu anchored her feet as she watched the hollow’s every move.
“Such language is not very becoming of a lady.” Retsu looked at the hollow’s arm on the ground as Halibel screamed devilishly.
“I’m going to smash your fucking face into the ground until your goddamn head explodes, and then I’m going to fucking rape that dead girl and wear her ovaries like a fucking tie.” The older woman grinned and slowly looked back up as her face darkened again. She had amused herself with the face smashing, but the very image of this hollow having her way with Isane was unspeakable. Halibel felt the tiniest of shivers run down her spine, the insults were nothing, the arm an inconvenience, but that look was something else.
“I never want to hear you talk about Isane again.” The captain let her spirit pressure run wild with hate and anger, a feeling she too kept to herself.
“Then stop me!” Halibel shrieked wildly as she charged the captain at full force again. Her legs and body followed next as she was frozen in place.
“What did you do to me!?!” Halibel screamed violently as tried to force movement of her body.
“You are nothing more than a puppet about to have her strings cuts, be sure to thank Azien in the next life.” Retsu sighed, about to finish her off as the blonde threw her head back and screamed.
“I AM NO ONE’S PUPPET! DESTORY! TIBURON!!!” The Espada’s spiritual pressure exploded throughout the courtyard as Retsu held her ground in blatant defiance. Halibel touched down lightly as her body and outfit were transformed. Her right-arm a giant spear-like weapon, her pants now a reveling skirt, yet only her hatred filled eyes remained the same. Halibel stepped forward with a wicked grin as she brought her convert arm up to attack.
“Let’s take our fight elsewhere, shall we?” Retsu knew if the 4th squad fell the 13 court-guard would lose the best trained medics in the whole soul society.
“Why ask? I know this is the main medical station for the Gotei 13.” Halibel turned her attention to the build beside them and raised her arm.
“Shinigami scum… WIDE-CERO!” The blonde swung her arm down at the building as a giant yellow beam roared out of her arm. The flash step was instant as the captain deflected the murderous cero and screamed angrily.
“YOU WILL NO LONGER BE ASKED ESPADA!!!” Retsu was in close range instantly, her bloody coat waving violently as she smashed Halibel’s face through a little break in her defense and sent the blonde high and far into the air. In a different part of the soul society both Shunsui Kyoraku and Jushiro Ukitake looked towards the 4th’s quarters as they saw Retsu soar into to the air, her face twisted in rage.
“That can’t be good.”
The two women glowed fierily in the sky as Unohana held nothing back. Halibel tried to figure out where all this woman’s strength was coming from as she looked back down at Isane laying peaceful.
“That girl?”
The captain saw her chance and took it.
…
…drip
…drip, drip
Unohana’s blue eyes found themselves looking into Halibel’s green ones. The hollow looked down to see blood spatter from her mouth as she saw a black blade stuck deeply into her chest. The dark-haired woman looked over to see the hollow’s short blade deep in her shoulder, her hand holding it up.
“Your comrades, your fracción cry out for you, Apache, Mila Rose, and Sun-sun are already dead.” The captain lifted herself up, blood pouring from her left shoulder and hand.
“They were weak, they failed me!” Halibel panted harshly, staggering back as she held her sword in a death grip.“You’re wrong, your love for them made them strong, everything you said and did for them…” Unohana stumbled to her feet as the Espada lord stood only a few feet away.
“Absurd, I didn’t love them, they knew their lives were forfeit from the beginning, sacrifice is my mark of death.” Halibel reached up to her face out of habit for using her cero and lurched forward; swinging her sword at the injured captain. Unohana flash stepped to the side and swung her sword, slicing Halibel deeply across her right side.
“Still, without you knowing it, they listened to you, worshipped you…” Retsu snatched the hollow girl’s forearm as Halibel flinched back in shock. “...loved you.”
Halibel tried draw back from the soul reaper as her mind suddenly started flashing back randomly.
“My bankai merges with people to heal their minds and bodies, so naturally I have a little insight on that person.” Halibel’s legs trembled as she lost her balance. Her sword dropped from her hand as she started to black-out.
“I tried to heal your fracción, but it was too late.” Unohana lowered the shuttering Espada to the destroyed ground. The blonde struggled for breath as the random images continued to flood her mind of her subordinates, showing them how to use their cero, hand-to-hand combat, that very training and time was enough for them to forge bonds with Halibel weather or not she wanted to admit it.
“S-Stop, no more….” Halibel struck Unohana’s chest weakly as Retsu surged Halibel’s mind even more. The blonde’s eyes rolled back as her fist dropped to her side.
“Shhhh, you’re hurt badly.” Unohana looked down at the dying hollow as Halibel looked into the darkening sky above.
“Being an Espada, I didn’t have time for friends, comrades… lovers.” Halibel whispered dryly as Unohana felt pity for the hollow woman.
“Loneliness is the worst thing anyone weather they are human, hollow, or soul-reaper can suffer, without the love of others, life becomes meaningless and empty, many even turn violent to prove their existence.” Unohana said tenderly as Halibel shook her head.
“You don’t understand soul-reaper and never will. You have no idea what it’s like to be a hollow, to be hated by everyone and having the emotions to suffer it every waking moment.” Halibel coughed up blood as she knew her time was coming.
“Now send me back to Huceo Mundo, so I can pay for my failure.” Halibel requested softly as Unohana shook her head this time.
“No, everyone deserves to be loved, hollow or not.” The captain replied with lifting her sword as Halibel frowned.
“I don’t want your pity or your mercy, now finish it.” Halibel struggled to get up as she found she couldn’t.
“They’re waiting for you Espada…” The hilt of her Zanpakutoo glowed as she pressed it to green-eyed woman’s forehead. “…Go to them Tia Halibel.” A blinding light consumed the hollow woman’s body as her outline started to fade and finally disappeared.
…
…
…
Darkness, sweet, empty, darkness, Halibel’s naked form floated around in it as she found herself thinking about what the captain had said.
Happiness…?
…Friendship…?
…Love?
She didn’t really know what they were, but for some reason now she wanted to find out. Her fracción began to form in her mind as she bit her lower lip.
Apache…
…Mila Rose…
…Sun-Sun.
“I’m sorry…”
At this thought a tiny little light appeared.
“What’s this?”
The light started to grow as Halibel shaded her eyes.
“Is this the way back to Huceo Mundo? No, it’s something else.”
The light got bigger and brighter as she squeezed her eyes shut and began to freefall.
The darkness turned to light on her closed eyes as her senses came back to her. First was her skin, it didn’t feel hard and cold but warm and soft. Second was the smell, not dusty or arid but sweet and humid. She knew from just these things alone she was not in Huceo Mundo. Next were the many sounds surrounding her, rustling leaves, birds chirping. She slowly opened her eyes as she stared into the blue sky above as hot sunrays beamed down on her.
“Where I’m I?”
She leaned up on the soft grass and looked around. This place was so colorful and lively she couldn’t help being a little scared. She slowly got to her feet as she found her Espada uniform gone and replaced by some strange tunic. She felt up her neck to her face to find her collar and mask gone replaced with more supple skin. Her number and hollow point were also gone as she didn’t understand any of this at all.
“Where did she send me?”
Halibel pondered as she found a dirt road and began walking. After a short distance she saw a small shack with three figures working the land. Two of them were short and a tall one was all she could make out as she decided to ask where she was. Coming up to a fence, she cleared her throat as the group turned. Halibel’s jaw dropped as she instantly reckoned the three, it was Apache, Mila rose and Sun-Sun all smiling.
“It’s Lady Halibel!” Apache took off running as the others followed swiftly. Wide eyed and mouth ajar the blonde just stared as her fracción jumped on her. Their masks and hollow points gone from their lovely bodies as only creamy smooth skin covered them.
“Ohhhh Master Halibel I thought we’d never see you again.” Sun-Sun cried as she squeezed the blonde. They were all crying now and telling her how thankful they were to see her again. Halibel remained frozen as the three backed off a bit.
“Lady Halibel…?” Mila Rose asked softly as the former hollow didn’t say or do anything. Suddenly tears formed in her green eyes as a new, strange feeling consumed her. Her heart felt heavy as goose-bumps covered her skin
“Is this love?”
“Master H-Halibel, y-you’re crying!” Apache cried harder as they had never seen their master cry or show any emotion whatsoever.
“Don’t be ridiculous.” Halibel said sternly as she lifted her hand to her face and found that indeed she was crying. The three just waited nervously as the blonde looked at her wet fingers and did something she had never done.
“Please just call me Halibel.” She smiled, opening her arms and hugged them for a first time. The feeling now indescribable as Halibel just sobbed with her fracción no, Apache, Mila Rose, SunSun.
"I finally understand what it means to know love Retsu... Thank you."
