***Mad Ramblings aka Author's Notes***
Okay, gang, this got written because the pretty aristocrat wouldn't leave me alone about it. Read it if you want, if you don't like boys and girls together don't read and don't bitch if you read it anyway. You were warned. I don't know if there will be sex with this, maybe, maybe not. Depends on how things flow. Though I usually tend to err on the side of romance rather than smut. ***Byakuya Kuchiki, current head of the Kuchiki family, stared at the family members and advisors gathered around the room as though they’d lost all manner of sanity and reason. Partially because he was fairly certain they had. What they were asking of him was simply impossible. He’d sworn that he would never do that again. It was too much to ask . . . no, he thought, they were not asking, they were demanding. Unfortunately, this was something well within the rights of the family to require of him. He simply had no idea if he could survive the mere thought of it.
“I beg your pardon, I believe I heard you incorrectly,” he finally said, seeming serene on the surface while the very nice meal he’d had a few hours ago threatened to vacate his stomach at high speed.
“I do not believe we were unclear, Kuchiki-sama,” the head advisor said. “It has been nearly seventy five years. The clan needs you, as head of the family, to do this.”
At least the man was earnest in his beliefs, Byakuya thought. He certainly couldn’t fault him for that. “If someone suitable can be found, I will consider it,” he said, wording his statement very carefully. Suitable parties for this were very limited, he knew that from the research he’d done on his own. There were three, perhaps four people in the whole of the Soul Society who could fill the role his family sought.
A glance went around the advisors and family members that Byakuya did not like in the slightest.
“We believe that we have found a suitable party. Not only a member of the nobility but of royalty,” the head advisor said. Byakuya thought the other man looked entirely too pleased with himself.
“Royalty?” Byakuya questioned, one eyebrow twitching ever so slightly. That would mean . . . “I was under the impression that the princesses were a bit too young to be entering into something of this nature. As well as the fact that the eldest of them belongs heart, body and probably soul to another Captain of the squads.”
“The younger ones, yes, they are. They are also too much in the world of the living to be truly comfortable here. I was speaking of his Majesty’s elder sister, Inari.”
Now, that was entirely too much to bear at the moment. Byakuya held up a hand to forestall any more comments or questions before standing. “As I have said, I will consider it.”
He turned and strode from the room. As he rounded a corner he almost ran into Rukia coming in the opposite direction. The small woman looked up at him worriedly. “Ni-sama? Are you all right?”
Sweet gods, far from it, he thought. “Yes. I am fine,” he said. To the outside world, even to Rukia, who most likely knew him best, he had to be fine. There was simply no other choice in the matter.
“I’m sorry,” she said, still looking concerned.
“For what exactly?”
“I think all of the preparations being made for myself and Ichigo has stirred up ideas best left alone,” Rukia said carefully.
“They are correct, after a fashion,” he said. “It needs to be done. Were it solely up to me, I would simply proclaim any children you and Ichigo might have as head of the clan in my stead.”
Rukia shook her head. “You know they would never accept that. I am not a Kuchiki by blood.”
“I am aware. Duty first,” he said. No matter how much it tore his heart into tiny pieces and scattered it like Senbonzakura’s blades.
“Who do they want?” she asked. She’d been dying of curiosity since she’d heard it mentioned by some of the female members of the family.
“His Majesty’s sister,” Byakuya said.
Rukia’s eyebrows went up in surprise before she smiled. “I think, that they aren’t considering the fact she will never agree to it anymore than you will.”
Now he was wildly curious as to why the woman would refuse. Aside from the fact that she would be taking a step down in rank to a certain extent. “May I ask why?”
“Why she’ll never agree to it? Very simple really. She has the same reason you do.”
Byakuya was taken aback somewhat by that statement. He had heard certain things in passing but he paid rumors and gossip no heed for the most part. Though it seemed some of it was true if Rukia’s declaration was any indication.
“I can arrange for you to meet if you’d like. Perhaps for tea? Simply as a matter of protocol and to satisfy the family,” Rukia said. “It would be easier than allowing the advisors to organize it or you’d never escape without some sort of contract being drawn up between the families.”
“You are correct in the thought,” Byakuya said. It would be easier to say that Rukia had arranged a meeting as an intermediary between the families. “I believe that would be the best course of action for the moment.”
Rukia nodded. “I’ll ask her tomorrow if you’d like. See what her schedule is and arrange for something in a few days.”
“That would suffice,” Byakuya said, stifling the urge to rub at his temples to ease the headache he had now.
“I’ll see what I can arrange,” she said. She squeezed his arm gently. “I’m sorry that they’re pressuring you concerning this.”
“It is nothing more or less than expected,” he said. “If you would excuse me.” He shook off her hand and made his way down the hallway toward the solitude and peace of his own rooms.
Rukia watched him go, a slight frown still creasing her forehead. She had been worried it would come to this eventually. But since she knew the parties involved in this sudden drama, she also knew that they might actually fit together better than anyone suspected. Including them.
